Chapter 1

It wasn't until we got into his car that he offered a low explanation. "Don't listen to those bastards running their mouths. Mia is a dancer at my club. She got into some trouble, and as Capo, I sorted it out for her. It's just business."I just hummed in reply, leaning against the car window without another word.Julian's temper suddenly flared. "You don't believe me? You're still giving me the cold shoulder, aren't you?""Serafina... for the last six months, I've come home to you every single night. What more do you want from me?"I watched the streetlights blur past the window and said flatly, "I believe you.""I just didn't think the injury was a big deal, and I didn't want to distract you. Let's go back to the estate."The reply was perfect but completely soulless, like a pre-recorded message.Julian slammed his fist against the steering wheel. The blaring horn pierced the night, startling a group of dancers who had just stepped out of the club's back door across the street. One o

Chapter 2

Returning to the estate, I pushed open the heavy oak doors, coming face to face with the wedding portrait hung above the fireplace. The man in the frame had a reckless smile, his nose brushing against my temple. It was taken at the height of our love.Julian and I were both kids who grew up in the orphanage. When I was seventeen, the headmaster decided to marry me off to a vicious old mobster to settle a debt.It was Julian who grabbed my hand, pulled me over the high brick wall, and helped me escape, running all the way to the shipping docks. The headmaster cursed at our backs, "Julian Marchetti! If you're so tough, let's see you protect her for the rest of your life!"He had turned around, a reckless determination in his eyes. "Then I'll protect her with my life!"He used the meager earnings from his underground fights to rent a basement apartment, then started collecting protection money on the streets for the Family."Once I'm a made man, I'll get you away from all this.""When tha

Chapter 3

For seven straight days, Julian never returned to the estate.I didn't bother tracking his whereabouts either. I went through the motions, gave the divorce papers to my lawyer, and began packing what was mine. But my lawyer told me that to expedite the process, I had to submit the original marriage certificate we signed in that little chapel in the South Side years ago. That document was locked away in the old apartment we used to live in, which had been empty for years.I decided to go get it myself and take care of selling the apartment while I was at it.I brought the building manager upstairs, but when we reached the door, I realized it was slightly ajar.A woman's muffled moans and a man's heavy panting drifted from inside.Through the dim lighting, I could see Mia's cheap lace slip tossed casually onto the dusty floor. Julian had her pinned against the peeling wall, his dress pants dropped to his knees as he drove into her.Our wedding band was still on his ring finger as he grip

Chapter 4

When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a VIP room at the Family's private hospital.Julian was flipping through the folder I had risked my life to salvage. The marriage certificate with scorched edges fell out."This worthless piece of paper? You almost died for this?" His voice was tight with disbelief. "Serafina, you have a hairline fracture in your left calf and a lung infection. The doctor said if you'd been brought in ten minutes later, you would be dead!"I reached out and snatched the folder back.Without this original document, the expedited divorce with the lawyer couldn't move forward.Julian stared at my protective gesture over the folder, his brows pulling into a tight knot."All you had to do was back away and everyone would have gotten out alive. But no, you had to play this twisted game, forcing me to make a choice. Are you that desperate to prove where you rank in my heart?""This was a hit by our rivals. I protected Mia and got her out first because she's a civili

Chapter 5

My fingers clenched inside my coat pockets, knuckles turning white, as I limped across the marble corridor. The sound of Julian's leather shoes clicking against the floor approached from behind. "Serafina, I'll have a car take you back to the estate."I didn't look back, instead, I quickened my pace.I stumbled over something on the floor and fell hard. My freshly bandaged burn wound instantly tore open, staining the bandage red.The fall was brutal. Deep inside my chest, something shattered, taking with it the last, laughable shred of hope I had left.I clenched my jaw tight, but no matter how hard I tried to stop them, unwanted tears rolled down my face.Growing up in a convent orphanage, my greatest fear was seeing holidays where families reunited.Seeing the warm glow in streetlamp windows and hearing the laughter drifting out of other people's homes, the envy felt like a dull knife, hacking away at my flesh piece by piece.Julian knew this better than anyone.Yet now, just to codd

Chapter 6

A trembling nurse helped me back to an examination room to clean and re-bandage the torn wounds."Mrs. Marchetti," she asked, her hand hovering over the receiver. "should I call the Capo?"I calmly reached out and pressed the receiver down. "There's no need," I said flatly. "I'll go back myself."Returning to the estate, I went upstairs to the bedroom, picked out a few simple outfits from the closet, and placed them into a small suitcase. My phone screen lit up. Mia had updated her social media status. In the photo, she was wrapped in Julian's dark gray suit jacket, her head resting on his chest. The caption read, "He is my only safe haven in this dangerous world."Stone-faced, I swiped past the glaring photo, tapped her profile picture, and hit "Block."Outside the main gates, the car I had hired in advance was already waiting.I grabbed my suitcase, got into the back, and gave the driver the address. "Central Station. The night train to San Celano."The engine rumbled as the car slow

Chapter 7

It was past two in the morning when the night train pulled into San Celano.I stepped onto the platform, dragging my small suitcase behind me. The night air met me, carrying the damp, salty scent of a small Mediterranean coastal city."Serafina."At the end of the platform, an old man with graying temples slowly approached, leaning on an ebony cane.He wore a dark gray three-piece suit, an antique silver brooch on his lapel catching a soft gleam under the station lights. He stopped in front of me, bowed slightly, and pressed a solemn, old-world kiss to the back of my hand."Vittorio Bianchi." His voice was low and gravelly. "Your father was my mentor and my brother. Your mother... I arranged for her safe passage out of the city during the war."I stood still and nodded in acknowledgment, but my throat felt tight, as if something were caught in it."Mr. Bianchi...""Call me Uncle Vittorio." He looked up, his deep gray, aging eyes rimmed with red as he carefully studied my face. "You loo

Chapter 8

My life in San Celano was a fresh start.I buried my past and entered the Family's inner circle. I started by auditing money laundering ledgers and handling business disputes between gangs. No one here knew about my life in Porthaven, or the grief over losing my child that nearly killed me.The men of this old city saw me only as a young widow from the north, a quiet woman with eyes as cold as ice.During the day, I sat in the study, flipping through ledgers, cross-referencing every transaction from the Family's vineyards, casinos, and shipping docks. At night, I read in Vittorio's underground library, studying the bloodlines of the Five Families and thirty years of their debts. On weekends, I locked myself in the windowless underground archives, staying there all day long.Vittorio became my strictest mentor."Your father could spot cooked books in three minutes," he would say. "You will be no less."Three months later, two hot-headed Capos drew their guns on each other at the negotia

Chapter 9

It took Julian six months to track me down to San Celano. That day, I was in the estate's underground negotiating room, reviewing a money laundering operation with three old vineyard owners from Naples. My deputy pushed the door open and lowered his voice:"Miss Vitale, there is a gentleman from Porthaven waiting for you in VIP Room 3 at the club. He claims to be your... husband."I set my fountain pen down, my finger resting on the corner of the document for a brief second."Tell him I am occupied tonight.""He said he's been waiting for three days. It's about the divorce papers."I stayed silent for a few seconds. "Have Enzo get the car."I closed the folder and raised my hands to button my coat. "To the club."When the bodyguard pushed open the heavy, soundproof door to the VIP room, Julian was standing with his back to the door, facing the dim floor-to-ceiling windows.Outside was the night view of old San Celano, the sharp steeples of the cathedral outlined by the warm glow of the

Chapter 10

Another three months passed. Vittorio invited me into his private study."There's a job. It's dirty, and it's highly dangerous." The old man pushed a locked black leather folder toward me, the key resting beside it. "But it's more important to the Family than anything we've dealt with in decades. You can refuse, Serafina. No one will blame you."I opened the folder: Southern Border, Blacksand.A smuggling route spanning three countries had recently been choked off by a smuggling boss named Salazar. His men had already butchered two batches of negotiators sent by San Celano, dumping their bodies in the desert. They didn't even send the heads back. The Family needed someone to go there in person, bearing leverage, to get a ceasefire agreement signed."I'll go.""Think it through." Vittorio's gaze was heavy. "Those outlaws don't play by the rules. Going there is a death sentence.""I have," I said. "My father didn't calculate the odds when he went. If he could do it, I have no reason to
