Lucien had caught Giovanni at the door of the church, said his name once, quietly, with the particular quality that made Giovanni stop and turn and understand without being told that this was not a conversation for corridors. Giovanni had followed him without asking where they were going. They sat on the stone bench near the far wall. The fountain ran its small continuous sound into the silence. The night sky sat above them, patient and indifferent, asking nothing. Lucien told him everything. He told it without drama, the garden, the wine, the gate, the city at night, the inn, the fire, the rosary, the dawn, the running. Four years of silence after the running.
