Seraphina woke up with the anonymous letter still lying on her bedside table. She picked it up again. Some answers are safer left undiscovered. Return the book. She turned the paper over. Nothing. No signature. No logo. No clue who had sent it. She even held it up to the light. Still nothing. "So... that's helpful." After getting ready for work, she slipped both the letter and the black book into her bag. One way or another... She wanted answers. The hospital was quieter than usual. For once, the waiting room wasn't overflowing. Mia looked up as Seraphina walked in. "You look like you actually slept." "I did." "Good." "I was starting to think I'd have to drag you on vacation myself." Seraphina laughed. "I'll think about it." "You've been saying that for two years." Before she could reply, the head nurse called everyone together. "Quick announcement." The nurses gathered around. "We'll be getting two student nurses next week." "A few of you will be supervi

Three days passed. Seraphina hadn't seen another message in the strange book. The black feather still rested inside a small wooden box on her bookshelf. It hadn't disappeared. It hadn't changed. But every now and then... It gave off a faint warmth. Just enough to make her wonder if she was imagining it. At the hospital, life moved on. Patients came. Patients left. A little boy proudly showed everyone the cast on his arm, calling it his "superhero armor." An elderly woman secretly slipped chocolates into every nurse's pocket. Mia somehow managed to spill coffee on her own shoes. Again. Seraphina couldn't stop laughing. "How do you even do that?" "I have a gift." "A very messy gift." "I'm choosing to be offended." "You'll survive." "I hope so." The two of them were still laughing when the head nurse walked over. "Seraphina." "Can you help with the new student nurse?" "She's looking for you." "Already?" The head nurse nodded. "Be nice." "I am always nice."

Seraphina didn't answer right away. She simply looked at Noah. "...Why would you ask me that?" Noah seemed to realize how strange the question sounded. He let out a small laugh. "Forget it." "I probably sound crazy." "You do," Seraphina admitted with a smile. "But..." "...I don't think you're crazy." There was a brief silence. Then she stepped aside. "Come in." Noah hesitated. "Are you sure?" "It's just for a few minutes." "And besides..." She held up the pen he had returned. "You've earned at least a cup of tea." He smiled. "I won't say no to that." A few minutes later, they were sitting in her living room. Two mugs of tea rested on the coffee table between them. Noah looked around the apartment. "It feels... peaceful." Seraphina laughed. "It only looks like this because I cleaned yesterday." "So you're saying this isn't normal?" "Definitely not." They both laughed. The awkwardness slowly faded. Noah took a sip of his tea. "It's good." "My grandma tau

footsteps upstairs grew louder. Thump. Thump. They moved slowly across the wooden floor of the bookstore. Almost as if whoever was up there was checking every shelf. Every corner. Every room. No one in the library moved. Seraphina held her breath. Noah instinctively took a step closer to her. Alaric closed his eyes for a second, listening. "There are four of them," he said quietly. "You can tell just from their footsteps?" Noah whispered. Alaric nodded. "They're not trying to hide." "And that's what worries me." Another loud bang echoed above. Something heavy hit the floor. Books tumbled from the shelves. Seraphina jumped. "They're destroying the bookstore." Alaric's face hardened. "They're looking for the entrance." "The entrance to this place?" "Yes." "But they shouldn't know it's here." "Exactly." He looked at Seraphina. "Which means someone told them." Far above the mortal world... Azrael appeared on the roof of the books
