Chapter 21“If it did survive the fire, it is in the underground safe.”Dante made no pause to hear my answer. He yanked out a heavy-duty tactical coat from the armoire, threw an equally heavy-duty jacket my way, and took out a heavy black key card from his drawer.“Wear it,” Dante murmured, not taking his eyes off the door. “In five minutes’ time, Valeria will switch watches.”A half-minute later, we were smoothly making our way down in the elevator of the estate, going further down underground under the foundation of the De Luca estate. The silence was deafening between us, weighed down by the memory of the picture. The elevator doors led into a cool, dank passage of concrete and steel. This is the old sanctuary created by Giovanni De Luca before the war.Dante exited first, holding his pistol, his eyes moving across the poorly lit passageway. He placed his key card through the thick steel door at the end of the hall and entered in a twelve-digit number, before the steel rods of the

Chapter 23“Say it, Matteo!”I screamed the words out loud as they echoed through the dank walls of the vault. I hung over the black phone, listening to my heartbeat in my ears.“Say the name.”Crackling noises could be heard along with Matteo’s heavy breathing.“It is Elena,” Matteo stated bluntly. There was an oppressive silence in the underground chamber as the air was sucked out of the room in one fell swoop.“What?” My voice was barely audible. “No… I already knew that she provided them with the gate codes. I knew that she was involved…”“Don’t you get it, Fina?” Matteo said, his voice tinged with bitterness. “She wasn’t just an informant. She wasn’t just someone who was blackmailed into helping them. Her birth name, Elena Vance is listed as the founding architect of the Shadow Court on top of Giovanni De Luca’s ledger.”The room spun before me. I grabbed onto the side of the oak table.“No way,” I whispered, feeling sick to my stomach from the sheer disgust that came over me. “O

Chapter 25Chapter 25: The Unknown Ally“Coordinates set. Three miles east, where the old rail terminal stands.”The shrill sound of Valeria’s voice came over Dante’s headset, punctuating the soft rumble of the armoured SUV’s motor.Rain poured down in an endless deluge as we drove through the decaying industrial area. Old steel warehouses stood as rusty skeletons in the darkness of the night.“We make sure we have force on our side,” Matteo added from his seat beside me, slapping the slide of his Glock pistol to cock the weapon. “The text was received via dead-drop, but whoever sent it is standing by the signal source.”“No heavy detail,” Dante commanded flatly, putting the vehicle in park near the shadows of a derailed freight car. “Valeria’s unit will set up a perimeter two hundred yards out. If this is a trap set by the Shadow Court, they’ll expect a full tactical breach. Only Fina, Matteo, and I walk onto that platform.”I reached down, checking the small silver pistol Dante had

Chapter 27“Drop the gun, Dante!”I put all my weight on his arm, my nails scratching the heavy material of his sleeve. That metal remained pointed at Leo Rossi's head, held there by some kind of sinister and merciless precision which made the atmosphere instantly frozen.Leo did not duck. He did not lift his arms up to protect himself. He just stood there under that buzzing halogen lamp, staring at Dante with some kind of cold mockery that sent another wave of terror through me.“Go ahead, Boss,” Leo said coolly, his voice thick with ice. “Pull the trigger. Get your revenge. End it now, the way you wanted to do it twelve years ago in that harbor.”“Please, Dante,” I croaked, stepping into his firing path, leaving him with no choice but to drop the gun or shoot through me. “He came to give us the location! We cannot do this now!”A muscle started throbbing in Dante’s jaw, and for three excruciating seconds there was an oppressive silence around us, filled with the smell of wet cement,

Chapter 29“Ambush! Move to the south rafters!”Matteo's shrieking wail was suddenly silenced by a thunderclap of snuffling high-caliber fire reverberating through the ruins for the rest of the night. The cement floor beneath my heels split into a field of jagged shrapnel. Before the dust could settle in my nose, Dante's arm seized my waist like a steel arm band and I was delivered to the ground hard behind a buttressing iron pillar, the second bullet from the sniper going off in a shower of sparks on the metal as it ricocheted off.“Matteo, stay down!” Dante shouted. His sidearm already pointed, glinting in the weak light as he peered into the darkness above.“He set us up!” my brother yelled from the distance thirty feet behind a pile of rusted train wheels, shooting back three one by one to the catwalks. “Leo didn't just nab your files. He brought a whole squad of hit men to sweep the platform!”Flashing through the smoke of tear gas, the muzzle flashes of heavy automatic shone thr
