Chapter 1

The room fell silent. My brother, Dante Stone, was the first to react. He frowned and looked at me, wondering if I was joking or not. "Are you serious?"I nodded. "Yeah."The moment I finished talking, Mom, who had been standing at the end of the corridor, strode over. She had probably been eavesdropping on our earlier conversation, her eyes still red. But now, there was a noticeable look of relief on her face.Mom sat down beside my bed and reached for my hand. "Lia, I knew you were sensible."I instinctively avoided her, and her hand froze in midair, her expression turning awkward.Dad cleared his throat and spoke up, "Since you've made that decision, don't go back on it. The doctor said Michelle's body is getting weaker by the day and that we should sign the transplant consent form today."They had already gotten the document ready, pulling out a stack of papers and placing them in front of me. A declaration of voluntary withdrawal from the heart transplant candidate list was

The next day, while the nurse was busy with my medication, Mom walked into the room holding a thermal food jar.The familiar scent of chicken soup made me pause. From the moment I was diagnosed with heart failure, I couldn't keep any food down, so Mom would stew a different kind of soup for me every day. She would sit by my bedside, feeding me spoonful by spoonful, her eyes red. "If you can get better, I'll willingly give up ten years of my life."Now, she asked, "Did you take Michelle's protective charm?"My chest tightened. "No."Mom didn't believe me and opened all my drawers to check. "How is that possible? She came over yesterday and couldn't find it after that."She casually tossed my pill organizer, medical forms, and childhood photos aside. One of the pill bottles fell to the floor and rolled under the bed.I steadied myself against the edge of the bed to retrieve it, but my vision suddenly went black. When Mom noticed, she frowned. "Didn't the doctor say they'd pulle

Chapter 3

The third day after I moved into the shared room, I received a call from the hospital billing department. They told me there wasn't enough money left in my hospital account.I didn't know how to react because Dad had always kept funds in the account he set up for me.After checking, they informed me that the funds had been transferred out yesterday afternoon.I called Dad, and he picked up after it rang for a long time.On the other end of the line, they were discussing the price of imported anti-rejection medication, with Michelle occasionally interjecting. Dad patiently answered her questions whenever she asked.Only after they finished speaking did Dad remember I was still on the line."The money in my hospital account is gone."Dad didn't think too much of it. "The medication Michelle needs after surgery isn't covered by medical insurance, so I've diverted some funds to cover it. You're only undergoing conservative treatment right now. It won't cost much."I clenched the pa

Chapter 4

On the day of Michelle's surgery, my parents and Dante waited outside her room before dawn as the first snow fell.Mom brushed her hair while Dad kept pressing the doctor about the risks.Dante crouched beside her bed and put the lucky charm that belonged to me around her neck. He told her, "Don't be scared. We'll be waiting outside."I stood at the far end of the corridor, watching them quietly. No one noticed that I had changed into a hospital gown too.In the early hours of the morning, I suffered acute heart failure and was rushed to the intensive care unit. The doctor said a standard room was no longer suitable for me and that my family needed to sign a form acknowledging my critical condition. But they couldn't get in touch with them, so the nurse told me to find them.I had only taken a few steps when a searing pain attacked me. It felt as though a rusty knife was slowly twisting inside my chest with every breath I took.Mom spotted me first. She quickly walked over and g

Chapter 5

It read, "The patient has severe heart failure and is at risk of cardiac arrest at any moment. Please come to the hospital immediately."Dante stared at those words and immediately turned to rush back. But just then, the door to the operating room behind him opened. Michelle, not yet fully conscious, was wheeled out. She instinctively clutched his sleeve. "Dante…"Seeing how pale Michelle was, he stopped.Mom noticed the form in Dante's hand and asked hesitantly, "Is it really a critical condition form?"Dante felt a tightness in his throat. "The doctor wants us to go over immediately.""You should go and see what's happening." Mom had just finished speaking when Michelle suddenly furrowed her brows in pain.My family, who had just begun to relax, gathered around once more. Dad patted Dante on the shoulder. "Lia was in critical condition before, but she pulled through in the end. This is Michelle's first major surgery. She'll be scared if she wakes up and doesn't see us."Dan

Chapter 6

During Michelle's two-week hospital stay, no one made a serious effort to look for me. Dad had his assistant inquire about my whereabouts, but he only discovered that I had left my original room. So, Dad concluded that I had transferred to another hospital without telling the family."She's deliberately avoiding us." Dad leafed through Michelle's rehabilitation plan, his expression cold. "She thinks that by doing this, we'll feel guilty for giving up on her."However, Mom was filled with unease. "They were resuscitating her then. Could she really have transferred herself to another hospital?"Dad didn't answer. As for Dante, he stood by the window, staring at his last message to me, demanding to know why I refused to give the bracelet to Michelle.Michelle grabbed Mom's hand, her eyes reddened. "Is Lia still mad at me? If it weren't for me, she wouldn't have had to leave."Mom immediately comforted her, "This has nothing to do with you. She gave up the spot herself. Nobody forc

The cake knife slipped from Mom's hand and fell to the floor. She stared blankly at Dante.Dante's lips moved a few times before he finally spoke, "The hospital said no one has gone to claim Lia's remains."Mom froze briefly before letting out a small laugh. "That's impossible. Lia was only transferred to another hospital. She was in much worse condition when she was 18 years old, and she pulled through that time."Dad's face hardened. "It must be a scam. If something really happened to her, why would they wait so long before notifying us?"A thought suddenly struck Dante, and he hurriedly pulled out the jacket he had worn several times. The critical condition form was still in the pocket, but it was already crumpled and creased. The moment Dad saw the red warning text, he raised his voice. "Why didn't you go see the doctor?"Dante froze on the spot. "I thought she would pull through."The living room fell into absolute silence. They rushed to the hospital without changing thei

Chapter 8

Mom suddenly recalled the time I underwent my first surgery at the age of three. The doctors had warned of the high risks involved, and she held me close, weeping in the hospital corridor all night long. She repeatedly told me that she would be waiting for me outside, running alongside the gurney as I was wheeled into the operating room.Dad once set aside all his work to personally send and pick me up from school. There was a time I fainted in class, and he rushed over so frantically that he even put his shoes on the wrong way.Dante was even more fiercely protective of me from the time we were young. When my classmates mocked me for being so frail, he immediately confronted and fought them. When my condition flared up in the middle of the night, he carried me on his back to seek help, refusing to stop even after scraping his knees badly. They used to be so terrified that I might die. So, why did that fear fade away later on?Mom slumped beside the morgue freezer, sobbing so har

Chapter 9

After the funeral, Dad arranged for Michelle to move out of the house. He gave her a house and enough money to live on, honoring the bond formed over years of raising her.Mom rearranged my room, digging out my award certificates and boxes of medicine from the storage room. She also found the plush toy Dante had given me, one of its ears unstitched.Dante sat on the floor, clumsily sewing it back together. He suddenly remembered how, whenever I went to the hospital as a child, I would refuse to enter the examination room unless I was holding it.Yet later, they were so busy that no one even noticed I hadn't been able to bring my favorite plush toy along when I was hospitalized.Dad went through all the old photos. They depicted me from childhood to adulthood, always standing right in the center. But after Michelle joined the family, my position gradually shifted to the sidelines. At first, it was Mom holding her. Then, it was Dad standing behind her. Eventually, even Dante's gaze
