Aria's POVThe room smelled of wood smoke, same as the one I had woken up in, except this one had two people in it instead of a coach and a closed door.Kael was standing by the fireplace, still in the same torn jacket. Damien sat in the far corner, elbows on his knees, not looking at either of us. I stood in the doorway and did not move any closer."Aria," Kael said."Where is Maya?" I did not wait for an answer. "I want to see her.""Down the hall, second door," Kael said. "She is fine, Aria. I promise you."I went to check anyway. Maya was asleep, the blanket pulled to her chin, her breathing slow and even. I crossed the room and knelt beside her. When I brushed the hair back from her face, I noticed a faint mark low on her neck, already fading yellow at the edges. I stared at it for a second, then pulled the blanket a little higher around her.I had questions. Too many of them.
