Parley law is older than the Houses, older than the crown, possibly older than lying, which it exists to formalise. Both sides come unarmed to running water. Both sides may speak. Neither may take.Which is how I came to stand on a grey shingle bank at dawn, with a river between me and my husband, and the entire remaining architecture of my marriage reduced to forty lances he had agreed to leave on the far ridge. He had brought no Seraphina. Interesting.Cassian stood at my left shoulder and slightly behind — a placement he had chosen with the exactness of a man who has spent his life being read by rooms, and that placement said: hers. Not mine. Rowan held the bank at my right with a face like a door bolted from inside.Darius crossed the ford alone.I had wondered — with a small, cold curiosity I wasn't proud of — what it would do to me to see him again. The bond was severed; I had felt it die, tooth by tooth, on the coronation steps. What was left, it turned out, was worse than pain

We went up together. That was the entire plan, in the end — all of Cassian's exits and galleries and air shafts set aside for the one strategy Ashgrave had never once planned around, in either lifetime: that somebody would keep a promise. The fourth floor of the Glass Quarter is where the money is taken to feel serious. Marble the colour of good teeth. Doors that open without being touched. And at the end of it, framed in cold lamplight, the observation balcony — a shelf of glass and iron hung out over the atrium so that benefactors could look down on medicine being done to people who could not look back.Mara stood against the rail where the card had promised she would be, wrists bound, silver sash arranged over her borrowed coat with a curator's care. She was gagged. It says everything you need to know about my friend that the gag was clearly a late addition, and that above it her eyes were not afraid. They were furious, and they were doing arithmetic, and when they found me they wi

In my first life, I met Darius Blackthorn lying down. There had been a carriage, a snapped trace, a scream from a woman who was paid to scream, and a girl of nineteen face-down on the cobbles of Temple Square with her hands cut open. He had lifted me. Everyone had seen him lift me. For five years afterwards, at every dinner where the story was told, someone would sigh and say fate, and I would smile as though I had not been the object in the anecdote. This morning the trace had not snapped, because at dawn I had walked down to the yard behind the Vale house and quietly cut the buckle strap that was meant to fail, then buckled the good one in its place, then gone back to bed and lain there listening to my own heart until the bells rang seven. So I was standing up.That was the whole plan, and I want it recorded that I was aware of how modest it sounded.Temple Square at nine on a market morning is a great deal of noise arranged around a very old building. Flower sellers along the south

There are perhaps four correct answers to you didn't swallow it, and I had rehearsed none of them, because in the ordinary run of things the person who says it to you is your dearest friend and has already locked the door. She was not my dearest friend. She was a second-year on rotation with ink on her thumb, and she could ruin me by lunchtime with one sentence to the front desk."I beg your pardon?" I said."You didn't swallow it," Mara repeated, with the terrible cheerfulness of somebody who has never in her life been frightened of the correct things. "You did the wine trick. Wrist rotates, chin lifts, throat doesn't. I've watched two hundred people take a measure in that room and you're the first who's been any good at it.""Perhaps I'm just an unusually elegant drinker.""Perhaps." She fell in beside me down the steps as though we had arranged it. "The orchid's going to die, by the way. They always do on the fourth floor. Nobody's ever asked why."I stopped walking.Understand: I

I turned, because there did not seem to be a version of not turning that ended well. She was standing at the head of a stair that had not been there a moment before, or that I had simply failed to see, which the last five years have taught me is usually the same thing. She was drying her hands on a cloth that did not need it. Idris had gone very still beside me, the particular stillness of a man recalculating his own authority downward in real time."Go and see to the damp in the east reading room, Brother Idris," she said, without looking at him. "It's been three weeks. Someone ought to."He went. He went the way men go when they have been handed a problem they can actually solve, which is to say gratefully. That left the two of us, a grey box of my mother's entries, and a stair I had not noticed until she chose to stand on it.She was not old. I had built her, without meaning to, out of the wrong material — ancient, patient, part of the stonework. She was perhaps forty, dark hair pi
