Chapter 1

I followed the instructions on the wall—'Pour water for guests'—and entered the kitchen. I opened the cupboard and took out two mugs with trembling fingers. The sticky note did not indicate where the kettle was. I searched the kitchen for a while before finding it under the sink.Esther Logan's voice rang behind me. "Colin Smith, did you drop dead in the kitchen? How long does it take to pour us water?"I carried the two cups of hot water out, my hands trembling even more. The water splashed onto the tray, making a sizzling sound.Esther looked at me.The man beside her, the award-winning actor named Flynn Raymont, stood up and took the tray."Colin, it's been seven years. How did you let yourself get to this state?"He handed one cup of water to Esther, and the other cup was placed heavily on the table in front of me.I looked at him. "Who are you?"Flynn's smile froze before he tightened his grip on Esther's arm. "I'm Esther's fiancé, Flynn Raymont. We're getting married soo

Esther pushed me away. She turned around and kicked the wall covered with sticky notes in my house. "Go on, keep on acting. What are these? Your new script to tease women?"She reached out and began tearing the sticky notes off the wall. "Get up. Brush your teeth. Eat. Don't forget to breathe."With each note she ripped off, she read it out loud, her voice full of mockery. "Colin, you really are a genius. You even came up with such a trick to gain sympathy."Those sticky notes were to help with my survival. I slid down from the chair and tried to stop her, but my legs had no strength, and I fell to the ground. "Don't... Don't tear them up..."I knelt and crawled over to pick up the scattered papers.Esther watched me crawl on the ground and stepped on one of the notes. She bent down and picked up the note, which read: [Esther, happy birthday.]She paused. "What? You can't bear to tear this one? This must be the one you wrote back then. What's it for? To remind me how stupid I was

I shrank into my chair, unable to comprehend the director's words. Who was Esther Logan? Why would she help me?I looked at the empty wall, my mind blank as well.Esther walked up to me, and all the cameras immediately focused on her and me. "Colin, it's been seven years. How are you struggling to even feed yourself?"I looked at her, with only one thought in my mind. "You... were the one who tore the notes yesterday."Esther's expression darkened, and Flynn beside her immediately stepped in to smooth things over. "Oh, look. His memory really seems to be messed up. Esther, don't take it to heart."He turned to the camera with pity on his face. "Esther and I have long known about Colin's situation. Seven years ago, he left Esther, and we all thought he had found a better life. We never imagined he'd be living such a miserable life, and Esther has always felt guilty. She feels she wasn't good enough, and that's why he went down the wrong path."Flynn added, "So, the first thing she

I could not understand what Muriel's words meant and the relationships she referred to, but I could sense those gazes on me. They were unkind and nosy.Flynn came over and put his arm around my shoulder. "Muriel, don't say that. Those things from the past are over. Colin's current state is heartwrenching."He said and glanced at the camera, indicating that they should film more of this 'conflict'.I pushed his hand away and stood up, trying to avoid all this."Stop filming... Go away..." My voice trembled.Esther grabbed me again. "Colin, everyone is helping you. Why are you so ungrateful? Don't you like money the most? After this program airs, many people will be donating to you. You won't have to worry about anything for the rest of your life. "Or are you just acting? Trying to make me feel sorry for you? You should cry, make a fuss, and curse me as you did seven years ago!"Her words drew a burst of suppressed laughter from the crowd. My head started to hurt, and my voice a

The woman saw the needle in my hand, and her eyes turned red immediately."Elle..." I blurted. It was my sister, Elle.Elle turned around and pointed at Esther. "Esther! How dare you show up in front of my brother?! Do you think you didn't hurt him enough seven years ago, so now, you've even brought people here to film him? Are you trying to kill him?"Esther saw Elle and was stunned for a moment before a mocking expression appeared on her face. "I'm killing him? Elle, get the fucking situation straight! He brought it on himself. He ran off with someone else, and now, he's not doing well. "I came back to help him in good faith, but you're blaming me? ""Good faith?" Elle laughed exasperatedly. "You brought a camera here in good faith? What do you take him for? A tool to promote your ridiculous persona?"She pointed at Flynn. "And you, you wretch! Don't think I don't know what you've been up to behind my back! The two of you, get the hell out. Right now!"With her pointing at h

Elle looked at Flynn on the ground and the anxious-looking Esther. She was so angry that she could not speak. "Esther, you're just an idiot!"Esther paused for a moment, but Flynn's groaning made her come to her senses."I'm going to sober you up today!" Elle wanted to rush forward again.Several staff members held her firmly."Calm down! Calm down! We've called the doctor and security!"Esther picked up Flynn and was about to leave when she stopped past my hospital bed. She lowered her head and whispered in my ear in a voice only audible to us, "Colin, you and your sister are the perfect match. One's a sleazebag, the other's a shrew. Just wait, I'll make you pay for this with the rest of your life."With that said, she helped the still-groaning Flynn up and left without looking back. The cameras also quickly moved away with them. The ward finally quieted down, leaving only Elle and me.Elle was livid as she came to my bedside. She saw the tear stains on my face and tenderly wi

Chapter 7

Elle clenched her fists as she glared at Frank.I hid behind Elle. Although I could not understand what they were saying, I could sense Elle's anger and helplessness. I tugged at the corner of her dress. "Elle, I... I'll go."Elle turned around, looking at me in disbelief. "Colin, what did you say? Do you know what they want you to do?"I shook my head. I really did not know. I only knew I did not want to see Elle look troubled. The sticky notes on the wall read: [Elle treats me the best. Don't make Elle sad.]I looked at Elle seriously as I spoke.Ultimately, Elle gave in.I was led to the town's central square, where a huge stage had been set up. The stage was crowded with people, all here to watch the superstar Esther. Countless cameras were pointed at the center of the stage. They pushed me onto the stage, and the dazzling lights blinded my eyes.Esther and Flynn stood in the center of the stage. Flynn's arm was in a thick cast, hanging in a sling across his chest. Esther

One hand reached in and pulled me out of the water. It was Elle. She burst onto the stage from nowhere, her eyes red as if they were about to drip with blood. She held me in her arms, wrapping my soaked body with her coat."Colin! Colin!" She kept calling my name.I coughed up a few mouthfuls of water and opened my eyes weakly, my mind still confused. "Elle..."She saw that I was fine, so she turned around and rushed toward Esther like a furious lion. "Esther! I'll kill you!"The stage once again fell into a frenzied chaos. This time, my heart was left numb with desolation as I watched everything unfold. I seemed to have done many wrong things, but I could not remember exactly what I had done wrong. The farce in the square eventually ended with Elle being taken away by the police on charges of intentional injury and disturbing public order.I was sent back home by Frank's people. They threw me onto the cold and damp floor, like throwing a broken tool."Mr. Smith, Esther said th

Chapter 9

"Tomorrow, go to the police station and tell your sister to admit to all the charges. Then, hold a press conference and tell everyone about your past 'scandal'. Apologize to Esther and Flynn. "As long as you do this, Esther promises to give you enough money for you to spend the rest of your life comfortably, and she will rescue your sister from prison. Think it over yourself."With that, the phone call ended.I held the phone, my body shaking like a leaf as I wondered how Esther could be so cruel. How could she use the most vicious lies to destroy Elle and me?I went to the detention center to visit Elle.Through a thick layer of glass, I saw the scars and exhaustion on her face."Colin, why did you come? Did they give you a hard time?" When she saw me, her first words were still full of concern for me.I looked at her, and I could no longer hold back my tears. "Elle, I'm sorry. It's my fault that you're in this situation.""Silly boy, what are you saying?"Elle smiled and tr

Chapter 10

"Hello, I'm Colin Smith. Sitting here today, I want to sincerely apologize for the mistakes I made in the past to Ms. Logan, Mr. Raymont, and all those who have been concerned about this matter. "With each sentence I spoke, the camera flashes grew brighter.I saw the corner of Esther's mouth curl up, revealing an imperceptible curve. That was the posture of a victor.I continued reading the script, my voice without a trace of fluctuation. I mentioned how I was blinded by money and how I had heartlessly abandoned Esther, whom I loved deeply back then. I said I was so impoverished now, all because of my mistake.I elaborated how much I was grateful to Esther for forgetting past grievances and giving me a chance to start anew.Halfway through my speech, reporters began to ask questions."Mr. Smith, who was the businesswoman you were associated with back then? Why did she dump you?""Mr. Smith, I heard that you later developed mental problems. Was it a result of the trauma from bei
