Inspector Carlos goes on to brief his men on how they will proceed into the compound. The fence is low enough for them to jump over it easily, and that’s exactly what they intend to do without alerting whoever is inside the house.Raina, Sam, and I are told to go back and wait inside our cars so as not to get in their way. Afterward, the policemen begin to fan out one by one and encircle the compound with their weapons drawn.“I don’t think they need the guns,” I tell Sam nervously, as we slowly make our way to my car.“The people inside aren’t armed, and there’s also my children to consider. What if one of the policemen fires his gun and a stray bullet accidentally hits my – “I can’t continue my statement because my throat closes up from fear. Sam holds me by my shoulders, making me look up into his beautiful brown eyes, which are now filled with concern for me.“Calm down, Eunice,” he tells me softly. “These guys know what they’re doing. Trust me, they’re aware of the risks too. Do

When my eyes finally flutter open, I don’t immediately recognize where I am. However, a quick visual scan of my surroundings tells me that I am in a hospital room.I see Sam sitting on a white plastic chair and hunched over my bedside, probably taking a nap. I wonder what time it is.As I lift my hand to check my wristwatch, I realize that there’s an IV tube attached to the back of my hand. Sam must have sensed my movement because he raised his head to look at me.“Hey, you’re awake,” he says with a warm smile. “You gave me quite a scare back there. Are you ok?”I try to sit up but feel a small ache in my back. I let out a groan and lay back on the bed with a sigh.“Where are we?” I ask weakly.“St. Ivy Hospital. You fainted,” Sam informs me.“Has the police found my children?” I ask hopefully.“No, but they are working on it. Walter and his family aren’t cooperating. They’re determined not to say a word.”I begin to cry. I can’t remember the last time I felt this frustrated or mental

I return to the room and retrieve my phone from my purse. I check my messages and also call Sam for an update. There are messages from some of my friends who are just checking up on me. None of them is aware of what kind of nightmare my life has been in the last 24 hours.I simply didn’t have the time or the presence of mind to call any of them and tell them what was going on. There are also missed calls from Mrs B, Raina, and the school headteacher.I decided to call Sam again to find out where he was and how far he and the others had gone in rescuing my children.Someone knocks on the door and before I can respond, the door bursts open, and my daughters come rushing into the room, giggling and screaming, “Mummy!”I almost can’t believe my eyes. “Oh, my goodness! Am I dreaming?”They jump on the bed and wrap their arms around me in a huge double hug. I can’t help but burst into happy tears. My babies are back! My babies are in my arms! My babies are ok!“We missed you, Mummy,” says K

A tense silence descends between Sam and me in the car. I admire how he has taken this matter so personally, as if my daughters were his. However, I must be careful with how I proceed on this issue. My children are still tied to the Francis family, and Walter will never stop being their father.I don’t want to make any decision that might affect my children negatively in the future. Also, I don’t want the world to regard me as a vindictive woman who will go to any lengths to take revenge on my ignorant ex-in-laws. “I appreciate your sincere concern for me and my children, Sam,” I begin tentatively. “But this is a family issue, and I want to be very careful with how I handle it.”Sam merely clenches his jaw but says nothing. His eyes are still focused on the road ahead.I wonder if he thinks that I am taking his help for granted, especially now that I’m hesitant about pressing charges against my ex-in-laws. The same people who attempted to whisk my children away from me permanently.“

Shortly after Sam left my place around noon, the headteacher and some of the administrative staff of the girls’ school came to pay us a courtesy visit at home. It was also an opportunity for them to apologize for the role they played in inadvertently allowing Bridgette to take my children out of school without verifying with me first.I took the time to vet my children’s contact list and remove anyone related to their father who still had their information on the list. The school staff assured me and the girls that such an error would never repeat itself.“I actually toyed with the idea of pulling the girls out of the school after what happened yesterday,” I tell them after they were done groveling and begging me to forgive them. “So, I’m hoping that I won’t regret letting the girls return to the school again.”“Please, ma’am. I promise you, we have learned our lesson,” says the headteacher, Mrs Wong. “As I already said, what happened yesterday was a very costly oversight on our part,
