Abigail swallowed hard, her throat suddenly dry as she heard the question directed at Mark.“This is the first time I’ve seen her too,” Mark replied flatly, his sharp, judgmental gaze still fixed on Abigail.“Enough. Do you really have to make such a big deal out of who met whom first?” Nora grumbled irritably. “Sit down. You can continue your pointless conversation later,” the older woman ordered as she took her seat at the head of the table.Mark glanced over the table setting. Six place settings had been arranged neatly, including the extra one Abigail had just brought out.“Where are Edward and Amora? Haven’t they come out of the wine cellar yet?” Nora asked, glancing toward the empty doorway.“I’ll go get them, Nora,” Abigail said quickly. She turned and hurried toward the back kitchen, desperate to escape and calm the frantic pounding in her chest.“Can’t you be a little friendlier to her?” Ian muttered under his breath after Abigail disappeared behind the kitchen door.“What do

“What are you—”Once again, Abigail’s words were cut short when Mark’s right hand immediately covered her mouth. He pressed his index finger to his own lips, giving her a firm signal to stay quiet.Abigail was irritated and wanted to lash out, but she chose to comply with his demand. She stood rigidly in place, straining her ears toward the outside. The sound of a door opening echoed through the house—the sound Abigail was certain came from the door leading to the basement. A few seconds later, she heard another door close with a muffled thud, signaling that the connecting door between the back kitchen and the main kitchen had been shut again.Once she was certain Ian had disappeared, Abigail immediately slapped Mark’s hand away from her mouth and glared at him furiously.“What exactly were you doing? Why did you drag me in here to hide?” Abigail demanded angrily.Mark himself was startled by what he had just done, but Abigail’s reaction surprised him even more.During their previous

Abigail jolted in surprise. Her heart seemed to leap into her throat as she turned around. The man by the pool was already gone from her line of sight.“What are you doing over there?” Edward’s voice from the doorway snapped her out of her daze.No... I must have seen it wrong.Abigail took a deep breath, trying to steady herself, before walking toward him.“Nothing. I just finished waking Amora,” she said, doing her best to compose herself. “Are you looking for something? Don’t tell me you’re thinking about drinking wine this early in the morning.”Edward let out a quiet chuckle. “No. Actually, I want to put a lock on that door. Those kids got my Nora completely drunk last night. And now she can’t even get out of bed because of her headache.”Kids? So Mark and Ian really did stay here last night, Abigail thought.“Did you make bread?” Edward asked when the delicious aroma drifting from the oven caught his attention.Abigail nodded. “I promised I’d make burgers for Amora.”“Did you mak

“I’m going to walk Amora to the bus stop, and afterward I’ll head to the supermarket to buy some groceries. Do either of you need anything?”Abigail directed the question at Edward and Nora, who had forced themselves to sit at the dining table despite their pale, hungover faces after last night’s drinking. Meanwhile, Ian and Mark had already gone back upstairs—who knew what they were doing up there?“I don’t think so. Are you planning to cook something?” Nora asked in return.“My oat bars are all gone. I thought there were still a few left, but apparently someone finished the entire batch. I’m also stopping by the pharmacy. Is there any medication you need me to pick up?”Nora listed several medical supplies she needed, and Abigail carefully wrote them down in the small notebook she always carried in her purse. After clearing away the breakfast dishes and packing Amora’s burger lunch, Abigail took her daughter’s hand and led her toward the front terrace. She planned to walk to the sch

“Your bread was absolutely delicious. They want to have it again. Some of them even asked if you could make other kinds of cookies. I told them you were incredibly good at baking. So? Would you be willing to make a few more jars of cookies for them?” Nora asked enthusiastically. After dropping out of her design program several years ago, Abigail had spent most of her time working in the kitchen of a restaurant. She wasn’t as skilled as a professional chef, but she had managed to pick up recipes from some of the more experienced cooks and would experiment with them whenever she had a little extra money from her tips.Still, Abigail hesitated. She couldn’t help wondering whether Nora’s friends genuinely liked her baking or were simply being polite, afraid of disappointing the older woman.“I’m not sure, Nora. I’ve only tried a few recipes. And the bread I made yesterday... maybe it tasted good simply because I’m used to making it. Perhaps it just happened to suit your tastes.”Ian, sitt
