Chapter 11

Third-Person POVClara went with Liam to the hotel, helped him check in, and stayed for dinner. They sat by the window talking about the next few days, and the whole thing felt easy and natural. In a far corner of the restaurant, Pierce stood in a cheap knockoff coat, holding up his phone to take pictures of the two of them. A vicious grin spread across his face as he snapped the shot."Well, well, well, Liam Morrison. Living the good life, aren't you?" he muttered through clenched teeth, pocketing his phone and practically running home. A year's worth of resentment had finally found an outlet.Gwen had barely walked through the door when Pierce came charging at her, waving his phone in the air."Gwen, look at this!" He shoved the screen right in her face.In the photo, Liam was wearing a tailored cashmere coat, polished and put together, smiling like he didn't have a care in the world. Clara walked beside him, poised and elegant. Behind them was the most exclusive five-star hote

Chapter 12

Third-Person POVGwen sat outside the cemetery gates all night until the first gray light of dawn crept in.She was convinced that Liam had come back and that he'd brought that woman with him to visit Andy's grave. The thought buried itself in her chest like a splinter, driving a wave of desperation so fierce it bordered on madness. She had to see him.She tore back home in a frenzy. Pierce woke up to the sound of her ransacking the apartment and opened his mouth to yell, but one look at the darkness in her eyes made him swallow the words. She dug out a designer outfit, one Liam had bought for her years ago that she'd only worn once. She washed her face, put on makeup, and tried to make herself look presentable. But when she smiled at herself in the mirror, all she saw was sunken eye sockets and streaks of gray at her temples. The ill-fitting clothes couldn't hide how far she'd fallen. She refused to give up. Then she thought of Andy. She bolted out the door and headed straight

Chapter 13

Liam's POVAn hour later, deep inside the cemetery, I had just reached Andy's headstone when I spotted a familiar figure.Gwen's eyes lit up the moment she saw me. "Liam…"She took a step forward. Clara moved in front of me, her gaze sweeping over Gwen with a quiet, cutting authority.Gwen's fists clenched and a flash of anger crossed her face, but when she looked at me, she forced it down and replaced it with something careful and almost pleading."Liam, I've been looking everywhere for you." Her voice was rough, and she held out what she was carrying."Look, I bought gifts for Andy. He used to love model cars, remember? And I got him action figures too."I stopped and looked at the brand new toys piled in front of the headstone, then let out a cold, quiet laugh.Gwen must have thought I was moved, because she started wringing her hands, her eyes full of hope.I didn't touch any of it. I just looked at her. "Andy didn't like any of that."The smile on her face froze. "H-he d

Chapter 14

Liam's POVI'd originally planned to fly back the same day, but headquarters adjusted the project timeline at the last minute. I was asked to stay for seven days as the client's representative to oversee the handover at a new local branch office, which happened to be in the same city I'd left behind.By coincidence, it was also the same company where Gwen had been reassigned after her demotion. On the first day, I sat at the head of the table for the project meeting with Clara beside me as the technical consultant. Gwen was there too.She stood in the corner, her eyes darting everywhere except in my direction. She couldn't bring herself to look at me.After the meeting, a swarm of staffers crowded around me, falling over each other to fill me in."Mr. Morrison, did you know? Gwen's had the worst year of her life. She's been running around the city like a lunatic trying to find you.""I heard that boyfriend of hers is a total nightmare. He's burned through whatever money she had

Chapter 15

Liam's POVClara walked up to me, her tone even. "Liam, I had someone run a background check on her."She paused, then continued with a trace of mockery. "Pierce is the old chairman's illegitimate son, the one nobody was supposed to know about. The chairman is getting on in years with no legitimate heir, so he's been scrambling to find a successor."But Pierce has no credibility and no ability to run a company, so to appease him and keep the rest of the family in line, the chairman handed him this branch. Since Pierce can't manage it himself, they made Gwen vice president, though she'll actually be running the place."I wasn't surprised in the slightest. All I felt was the absurd satisfaction of watching the last piece fall into place.Clara continued, "But that's only temporary. What the chairman really cares about right now is the baby Gwen is supposedly carrying."I looked up sharply. The memory from the hospital corridor flashed through my mind—Gwen begging that pregnant woma

Chapter 16

Liam's POVOver the next few days, Gwen started going after Clara with everything she had. She slashed project budgets, stalled approvals, and even challenged Clara's proposals in front of everyone during meetings. But Clara was Clara. She calmly produced better alternatives every time, and when Gwen pushed too far, she called in backing from headquarters and shut down every petty move without breaking a sweat. Gwen came out on the losing end of every clash, and her mood worsened by the day. Finally, at a company dinner, Gwen drank too much. She cornered me outside the restroom with bloodshot eyes."Liam." The stench of alcohol on her breath was overpowering, but her voice was almost pleading. "I know I was wrong. Give me one more chance. Just one last chance, please."I looked at her the way you'd look at someone performing to an empty room."The old chairman… He's in his 80s." She was shaking as she grabbed my arm, her voice cracking."His biggest wish in life is to see his

Chapter 17

Third-Person POVFranklin waved his hand, and two bodyguards stepped forward to haul Gwen and Pierce away.Pierce thrashed and screamed, "Dad, I'm your son! Gwen is carrying your grandchild! You can't do this!"Franklin stopped and turned. Those old eyes, sharp despite his age, cut through Pierce like ice. "A grandchild? Do you take me for a fool?"He let out a cold laugh. "I'm not that far gone. You'd stoop to a scheme this pathetic just to claw your way up? If it weren't for the fact that you share my blood and that your mother begged me on her knees to acknowledge you, you'd already be in prison for embezzlement."Gwen and Pierce went as white as sheets. They were thrown out of the building without an ounce of ceremony.…Late that night, Gwen lay on the bed staring at the ceiling, her eyes empty. The bitterness gnawed at her from the inside. She thought about before, when Liam was still there and Andy still called her "Mom" in that soft little voice. The house hadn't been

Chapter 18

Liam's POVThree days later, I was at the airport, making my way through the crowded terminal as the speakers announced the flight to Valmont.Just then, my phone started buzzing relentlessly. I almost declined, but whoever it was wouldn't stop calling, so I picked up."Is this Mr. Morrison?" The voice on the other end was rushed. "This is the police department. We're calling regarding the case involving Gwen Dalton and Pierce Donovan."I listened in silence, my face giving nothing away. Then the officer finally asked, "Mr. Morrison, is there anything you'd like to say? Would you like us to arrange counseling for you?"I turned her down without hesitation."No. The dead are already gone. There's nothing to say. If there's any legal procedure that needs my involvement, please contact my lawyer."I hung up. My assistant had sent over the latest work schedule, every slot for the next three months packed tight. I had a briefing at headquarters in Valmont, then an acquisition deal
