POV: Beatrix The slap was still ringing in my ears when I finally managed to focus on the woman standing in my doorway. My mother’s chest heaved, her hand still raised where it had struck me, her face twisted with anger I’d seen a thousand times before, just never delivered like this. A hot, sharp sensation pulsed from my jaw to my ear, making the hallway seem to tilt briefly, as if the floor had shifted beneath me. I pressed my palm against the stinging skin and just stood there, breathing, waiting for the room to stop tipping. I had heard my mother yell at me my entire life. I had absorbed decades of her remarks about my weight, my choices, my usefulness, until the words barely registered as anything more than weather. But no one had ever hit me.
