Morning came quietly to the hidden castle. A pale blue light slipped through the tall windows of the master chamber, falling across the heavy curtains and the rumpled sheets. Outside, snow covered the forest in an endless white landscape, while the first rays of sunlight touched the highest branches of the ancient trees. Inside the room, however, neither Annesa nor Malthus paid attention to the morning. They had awakened at almost the same time. And neither had expected the other to be so close. For several seconds, they simply stared at one another. The silence between them was different from the silence they usually shared. And then, in the quiet morning, something happened between them that neither had planned. There had been hesitation at first. A question in Annesa's eyes. An uncertainty in Malthus's.
