Chapter 2POV: OdetteThe double doors swung open, and the air in the ballroom instantly seemed to be sucked out.The person who walked through them was a mountain of a man, standing at least six-foot-five, clad in a charcoal-gray three-piece suit that probably cost more than my entire life's earnings. His shoulders were impossibly broad, his walk possessed a predatory, effortless grace, and the sheer power radiating off him was enough to make the lesser Alphas in the room lower their heads in involuntary submission. It was Nikolai Valmont. The Alpha of the Valmont pack, the billionaire mogul who owned the very team Beckett had just been drafted to, and, most importantly, Clara’s father.Clara, who was currently smirking at me with delight, turned ghostly pale. Her grip on Beckett’s arm tightened until her knuckles turned white. She hadn't expected her own father to be the one to walk through those doors. The silence was absolute. Everyone in the ballroom was staring, waiting to see w

Chapter 4POV: OdetteThe black Maybach glided to a halt at the base of a sweeping, double-winged stone staircase.I sat frozen in the seat for a long second, staring up at the Valmont Estate. Up close, it was even more intimidating. It wasn't just a mansion; it was a fortress of black marble, towering glass windows, and imposing Gothic architecture. It practically radiated old-money wealth and cold, untouchable power. One of the bodyguards opened my door and I grabbed my bag, my knuckles turning white from how tightly I was gripping the straps, before stepping out into the morning air.Nikolai didn't wait for me and had already climbed the stone steps, walking through the massive front doors.I hurried after him, my cheap sneakers squeaking slightly against the polished floor of the grand foyer. The interior of the house was breathtaking, but it felt entirely devoid of life. There were no family photos, no warmth. Just towering portraits of stern, unsmiling ancestors staring down at

Chapter 6: What's Wrong With You POV: Odette I didn't answer that. There wasn't a good answer to give, not one that wouldn't be a lie, not one that wouldn't hand him exactly the reaction he wanted. So I bent down, picked up the ruined book off the floor, and set it back on the shelf like it was the most ordinary thing in the world, like nobody had just told me exactly how this was supposed to end. "I'll be back at four," I said. "Bring your math workbook." Then I left. I made it to the end of the hallway before my legs actually believed I was safe, and I had to lean against the wall for a second and breathe. Crawl into my dad's bed. God! Nine years old, and he already talked like he'd watched a hundred women audition for that exact role, close enough to see it happen more than once. ........ Four o'clock came fast. Too fast, honestly, for how little I'd figured out in between. I knocked once, out of habit more than expectation, and pushed the door open when nobody answered. Th

Chapter 8 Watching in the Dark POV: Nikolai The feed showed four angles of Cai's room, grainy, silent unless I turned the volume up. I'd had the cameras installed eight months ago, after the last tutor left with a bite mark and a lawyer's letter I'd quietly made disappear. I told myself they were for his safety. I watched Odette sit down on the floor across from my son, close enough that a soup stain still darkened the wall behind her, and I felt my jaw tighten without deciding to let it. Eleven hours. She'd been in this house eleven hours, and already she'd had a book thrown at her, soup flung across her chest, and now she was sitting cross-legged in the wreckage talking to Cai like he was a person instead of a liability. Every tutor before her lasted four days at most. The one before that lasted six hours. I still had the invoice from the broken lamp somewhere in this desk, filed under an expense category I'd created specifically because it kept happening. I told myself I was

Chapter 10: What the Numbers Remember POV: Odette I didn't ask him anything else that night. Some instinct told me the door he'd cracked open had already taken more out of him than he wanted anyone to see, and pushing further would just teach him that honesty cost too much to try again. We started the actual lessons the next morning. I brought a fresh workbook down to his room at nine, expecting another fight, and found him already sitting at the small desk by the window, arms crossed, but not braced the way he'd been the day before. Waiting, maybe. I decided not to read too much into it either way. "Fractions," I said, setting the book down. "I promise it's less exciting than yesterday." "Yesterday wasn't exciting. It was a disaster." "Fair point." We got through the first few pages without incident, his pencil moving steady, answers correct, no flinching at the word problems the way I half expected after everything he'd said the night before. I let myself relax slightly, the
