Chapter 1

“Nina, this isn't the way to the wedding venue, is it?”I sat in the front passenger seat looking at the unfamiliar sight out of the window, my voice flat. My wife, Nina Jones, grabbed my hand tightly, her eyelashes trembling. She then explained with a smile, “Heath, are you getting the wedding jitters? We’ve been preparing for this wedding for so long. Where else would we be going if not the wedding venue?”I fell silent at Nina’s response and gave none of my own.Despite her best efforts at hiding the truth, she forgot one thing. We’ve been together for seven years since I was first sent to this world on a mission. I understood her way too well. She would subconsciously bite her lip whenever she lied. She even locked the car door the moment I questioned her, as though she was scared that I would try jumping out of the car.I wasn’t surprised to arrive at that conclusion. Conversely, I felt rather relieved.I pulled out a cigarette from my pocket. With a click of my lighter

I smiled bitterly.“That's why you fooled me into getting married. You want to take away my heart and give it to him, right? Do you know that’s against the law?”Before I could say any further, Nina kissed me, sealing my lips shut with tears streaming down her cheeks. They landed on mine and trickled down my chin. Her kiss, which used to taste so sweet, now only felt bitter and acrid.“Enough. I… I really can’t stand idly by watching him die. On account of the fact that we’ve already registered our marriage, help me out one last time, won’t you? Once his surgery is a success and he recovers from it, I’ll pour my heart and soul back into our family and help you with your mission.”She grabbed my hand, her words seemingly draining her of all her energy.I looked at her pleading with me and smiled bitterly.I’ve been working on Nina as a mission for seven years, and I have never seen her bow her head to anyone. Even in the face of her superior’s threats or slander from her colleag

I started losing consciousness when the anesthesia started taking effect.Just when I thought the system would wipe me out due to my failure to complete the mission, I heard the system speak up.“The host has failed the mission! Wipe out all of the host's memories of Nina Jones.”I was stunned to hear the system’s punishment.I didn’t expect the system to just erase my memories of Nina. It didn’t kill me.Rather than a punishment, it came as a relief instead. At the next moment, the system extricated my soul from my body. All the memories I shared with Nina over the past seven years floated before me like a movie reel.Seven years ago, I had just arrived in this world. I didn’t know how to speak its language and was met with difficulties everywhere.I started to feel dispirited, drinking myself silly every night and almost freezing to my death in the middle of a cold, snowy night.Nina was the one who saved me and brought me back to her rental apartment.Even though I hadn’t

The next moment, someone pushed the doors to the operating theatre open.I was stunned to see who it was.Nina? What was she doing, barging into the operating theatre like this? One of the doctors tried to stop her from interrupting the surgery. “Ms. Jones, we’re in the middle of the surgery right now. Please leave!”She threw all caution to the wind as she rushed toward my body, lying down all cut open on the operating table.I felt a tinge of excitement brewing in my soul. Was she…Was she regretting her decision?Did Nina care about me after all?At the next moment, Nina grabbed the doctor’s arms and asked anxiously, “Doctor, can you take his liver and kidneys and give them to Shane, too?”She glanced at me and made sure I was completely unconscious before sighing in relief. She went on, “Shane just told me that his liver and kidneys have been badly damaged from long-term medication and treatment. Giving him a new set of organs would ensure quick recovery for him, too.”

What a nutcase!I cursed him under my breath before blacklisting him without hesitation. Not long after, someone pushed the door open to my ward.It was Shane Gotham and Nina Jones. The moment Shane saw me, he rushed over and pulled me into his arms.“Heath, you’re finally awake! Turns out that your ward was just opposite mine. Why didn’t you tell me that earlier? I'd have come to visit you immediately. If it weren’t for you, I would have died!”His tone was exaggerated, and the expression on his face was so fake. Despite calling me his savior, there was only disdain in his eyes.I was speechless. Why was this man behaving this way? He sounded exactly like a pretentious, two-faced snake. He was clearly trying to provoke me via text over the past few days. What was he trying to do by pretending to be the good guy here? The thought made me shove him away coldly.“Leave. Do I know you? Quit coming so close to me; it’s disgusting.”Shane stood stunned, but he quickly recovered

When Nina heard me say that I didn’t know her, she looked shell-shocked.“Heath, what did you just say?”Realization then seemed to dawn upon her. She grabbed my hand again and spoke even more tenderly than before. “Honey, are you still mad at me? I promised you that I’d do whatever you ask of me. You can ask me for whatever you like if that will appease your anger.”I only grew more irritated at her behaving this way. I shook her hand away.“I said I don’t know you. Step aside.”Shane immediately stepped forward, acting like he was heartbroken.“Heath, don’t be like this. I know you blame me. If I hadn’t returned and burdened Nina, you two would have long gotten married and be enjoying marital bliss right now. Blame me instead. Don’t be mad at Nina. If you want, I can die right away!”I looked at Shane with a frown.Somehow, hearing him speak irritated me.“Do you have a screw loose? I said I don’t know the two of you! Why are you two still acting like you’re in an episode

Chapter 7

This woman was insane.Nina saw the skeptical look on my face and panicked. She anxiously pulled out an identity card, then pointed to the date and photo on it.She said earnestly, “Heath, look! We’re in the year 2025 now! It’s written clearly on your identity card. You were born in 1998, and you’re 27 years old this year!”I took my identity card from her and examined it.The man in the photo looked exactly like me, but the look in his eyes was incisive, and there was a streak of youthful arrogance on his face.Date of birth…1998?Since when did I become so old?Disbelief and a profound sense of absurdity welled up in me.I looked at Nina in doubt. Was I really already 27 years old? Why do I not remember anything about it?Nina saw the change in my stance and spoke anxiously, grasping at straws. “Heath, did you really forget everything between us these seven years? And… The system’s mission… Did you forget that, too?”I looked at her speechlessly. What nonsense was she

Nina carefully lifted Shane’s hand to examine the scratch.Somehow, I felt out of sorts looking at the two of them. The fire in my chest burned even brighter.“He has a screw loose in his head, trying to spill hot porridge all over me. He had it coming.”My tone was cold with thinly veiled disgust and aversion.Shane’s eyes turned red. He choked back sobs and said indignantly, “Heath, I… I just wanted to serve you some porridge. I just had surgery and am still recovering. I was too clumsy, I’m sorry… I shouldn’t have done that. Oh, I’m so useless…”As he spoke, he snuck a glance at me from the corner of his eyes to see my response. His crocodile tears only convinced me further that he was a madman. Why was he being such a two-faced witch? Gross! Before Nina could speak, I rolled my eyes and bit back, “Do you not have arms or legs?“Can’t you do something as simple as serving a bowl of porridge? Of all places to spill the porridge, why did you so coincidentally almost spill it

Nina was extremely biased toward Shane. That proved that she didn’t love me with all her heart. What was the point of such a relationship?I remained silent as I looked on coldly at her putting on an act. When I didn’t say a word, Nina held my hand. Her cold hands were shaking ever so slightly.“Heath, whether your memories are intact or not, I’ll take care of you. We’re husband and wife, after all.”She sounded very resolute, as though she had made up her mind about it.Husband and wife?I looked at her, finding her words ironic.I asked, “Where's our marriage certificate?”Nina quickly pulled it out from her bag and handed it to me.I looked at the names on the certificate. Indeed, it was both of us, and the certificate didn't look fake.It seemed to be true that I was married to this woman before me.Doubts grew in my mind.Did I have a screw loose? Why did I marry this idiot?Based on her words, she had used me as a tool for her own selfish reasons. She wanted to be a

My friend fell silent and eventually agreed to my request.“Alright. I’ll email you the draft once it’s ready.”I hung up, feeling instantly relieved.I was about to order takeaway when someone pushed the door to my ward open.Nina walked in with a thermos in hand.“Heath, you must be hungry. I stewed your favorite soup for you. It’s very nutritious and great for your recovery.”There was a warm smile on her face. She looked as though nothing upsetting or awkward had happened between us.I looked at the soup in the thermos but didn’t lift a finger.Nina started to panic. “What’s wrong? Heath, did I do something wrong or did I cook it wrongly?”I shook my head. “You did very well. Just one thing, I'd never eat something so oily. I’ve never liked drinking soup since I was young.”I looked straight into Nina’s eyes, the look in mine incisive.“What makes you think this is my favorite soup?”My voice was cold, as though I was interrogating a stranger. The smile on Nina’s face
