The light in the medical room was a stark, sterile white.Massimo sat bare-chested on the exam table, his left shoulder wrapped in layers of gauze. The family doctor had just placed the final stitch, packed her bag, and left the room.I sat in the chair across from him, not saying a single word."Siena, how long are you going to stay mad at me?"Massimo offered a small smile, which tugged at his wound, causing him to draw a sharp breath.I looked up. "What are you laughing at?""Massimo Vitiello." I stood up and walked over to him. "You are the Don of this Family. You have four thousand armed men. You have a personal security detail that guards you twenty-four hours a day. So why did you take that bullet tonight?""Because that bullet was meant for you."I was speechless. He raised his uninjured hand, grabbed my wrist, and slowly pulled me toward him."I first saw you in Zia's garden when I was eight years old. I'll grant you the mercy of leaving a body to bury.""For the sake of our child..."The last thread of restraint inside me snapped."What did you just say?""Our child." He started crying. "Our baby, Sie

He had been holding her since three in the afternoon. Six whole hours. He refused to let anyone touch her, including Aunt Zia.When my aunt flew in from New York yesterday, she reached out to hold the baby, only for Massimo to politely block her hand."Don," I walked up behind him on the balcony. "The guests have all arrived."When Massimo turned around, the little one in his arms opened her eyes, too."You look so beautiful, I do not want to let you go downstairs," Massimo said."Save the sweet talk.""I am serious." He gently handed our daughter over to the waiting wet nurse, then walked over, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin
