All Chapters of My Parents Raised My Twin Rich and Me Poor for the Cameras: Chapter 11 - Chapter 13

After the semester started, I rarely logged in to Prism. The coursework was hard. Between classes and my restaurant shifts, I had no time left to watch that family perform. That changed when a classmate told me someone on Prism was livestreaming the search for a rich husband for his daughter.I clicked in and found the host was Grant. The old show had been taken down. The new one was called "Who Gets to Marry the Reed Family Princess?"Lily sat at the center of the frame, wearing an expensive red gown.Grant told the audience that whoever settled the Reed family's debts could win the chance to date Lily, get engaged to her, even co-manage her online accounts."My daughter deserves the most powerful man."He made it sound like a compliment. But the bottom of the screen displayed the amount each bidder was willing to pay.Lily was eighteen now.On paper, she could sign of her own free will. But sitting there, her fingers wouldn't stop trembling. The winner was Victor Hargrove, fifty-four

Once the case went to trial, I never logged in to Prism again. It didn't exist anymore anyway.I made a lot of new friends. Some came from Italy, some from Poland, and there was a French girl who was always falling asleep in math class.School was exhausting, and the restaurant work wasn't easy either. But every dollar I earned was truly mine. And every closed door was just a door, never something to be broken down in the middle of the night. After class that day, I stepped out of the supermarket as the Berlin evening breeze swept the street. The setting sun rested on the distant rooftops. No stream notifications on my phone, no missed calls from Grant.I stood there a moment, then carried the fresh bread I'd just bought down the street. Before eighteen, my life had an audience every single day. After eighteen, I finally didn't need an audience at all.
