Sienna heard the correct pattern at the door and stood before the latch turned. Not the east wing. Not the service stair under a climbing load. A secured interior suite on the north side—rooms that sat on ground the sensors still called stable, away from the foundation line Darian had cut and the vault path five people had used to leave. Elias was at the door with two seniors. The handset in her pocket remained open to a monitor channel that had gone mostly quiet.“Alpha’s order,” Elias said. “North suite. East wing stays closed until structural signs off. You’re not under extraction protocol anymore. You’re under relocation.”She followed them through corridors that still held limited traffic. Emergency passage on the main hall. Freezes on the deepest sublevels. The house did not feel open. It felt like a structure that had stopped actively fighting its own underside and had not yet decided what normal was.The north suite was smaller than the east wing rooms. Inner walls. One reinfo

Sienna locked the door behind Darian and stood with her hand on the latch longer than the pattern required.Southern channel holding. Messenger still a remainder in isolation. Five off the instruments, not off the problem. East wing closed. Permanent seals and structural sign-off still running under a house that had only just stopped reading as occupied. The bond carried his focus outward into that work—steady, heavy, no longer spiked with failing plates and climbing load. The danger had changed shape. It had not vanished. She moved to the reinforced window and looked down on the secondary courtyard. Limited rotation. No emergency stillness. The compound was trying to remember a rhythm that was not lockdown, and the memory was imperfect.Sienna rested her forehead against the cool glass for a moment. The contract that had brought her here had been paper and leverage and a timeline. The days under the network had burned the paper thin. She had followed orders through vibrating floors a

Sienna locked the door after he left and stood in the quiet he had named. When the east wing was cleared and the last permanent seals were logged, they would talk about the contract. What it covered. What it didn’t. No southern channel. No messenger. The paper and the gap where the paper ended. She moved to the window and opened the curtain a hand’s width. Night sat on the secondary courtyard. The bond followed him back toward the grid and the overnight watch on the western mark—steady, possessive, already half-braced for a conversation he had put on the far side of structural sign-off and sealed plates.Sienna let the curtain fall.Sleep came in longer pieces than it had in the hardened room. The floor stayed ordinary. No pulse. No open line during a load climb. When she woke to gray light, the first thought was not a sensor trip. It was the sentence he had left in the room like a second latch.Elias came mid-morning with the correct pattern and the courtyard window.“Escort is ready

Sienna did not sleep through the overnight. She dozed in stretches and woke to check the bond the way she had once woken to check for vibration in the floor. It stayed steady—Darian’s attention split between the east monitoring stack and the quiet watches, no spike, no sudden mobilization. Flat, if a person could feel flat through someone else’s focus. She turned onto her side and watched the dark at the edge of the curtain until gray light finally made the waiting honest.Elias came after first light with the correct pattern and a face that had already read the morning stack.“Overnight held,” he said. “Structural is signing inspection access at the review now. East wing still closed to residents. Alpha said you’ll hear the full result from him, not from the summary.”“Thank you.”When he left, she washed, dressed, and walked the inner north corridor once because movement was better than sitting on a clock. The bond shifted as the inspection review concluded—his focus tightening, the

Sienna left the latch unbarred after the night checks would be finished. She did not pace. She sat near the window with the curtain open a hand’s width and tracked the bond while he moved through the final grid confirmations—zero under the house, western clean, southern still background. When his focus turned toward the north suite, she felt it before the door opened. He came through without the formal knock the crisis had required, closed the door, and the claim that had been named in daylight settled into the room without an audience. No performance. No speech that tried to make the siege prettier than it had been. He set aside the last of the day’s authority the way he had set aside the tablet—deliberately—and when he reached for her she met him halfway. The bond locked open: residual fear of vibrating floors, the memory of an open line during a load climb, the anger at incomplete truths, the fact of choosing anyway. His mouth found hers with controlled hunger; her hands fisted in
