ASHVINNot now.Not when she had finally come to me.A doctor hurried toward us and immediately began asking questions.“What happened?”“She collapsed at my office.”“Did she lose consciousness immediately?”“Yes.”“Any known medical conditions?”I hesitated.I knew Evelyn had struggled with her blood pressure before, but I didn't know what her current condition was. Hell, even what I knew were scraps of information Isaac shared with me. “I don't know.”The doctor nodded and began examining her.“Get her blood pressure immediately.”The nurse wrapped the cuff around Evelyn's arm.I watched the numbers rise until they dropped again. 203/140I didn't need to be a doctor to know that was too fucking high. The doctor ignored me and turned to one of the nurses,“She appears to have gone into shock. The combination of the extremely elevated blood pressure and whatever caused the emotional or physical stress could have caused her to lose consciousness.”“Is she going to be okay?”The ques

ASHVIN“Where were you? Are you not on duty this week?” I asked Dr. Wilson the moment he appeared. I knew every doctor who was on duty in this section because my Nana’s life literally depended on it.“I am on duty, sir.”“Then why is Luna not treated?”Dr. Wilson looked at me as though I had just asked him to explain why the sky was green.“Luna?”“Yes. Little Luna. Evelyn's daughter. Your patient.”Recognition flashed across his face, followed immediately by alarm.“I wasn't aware she had been brought in. I had a sudden tire puncture on my way back to the hospital and was delayed.”“Then stop explaining yourself and go check on her.”My voice remained calm, but there was enough steel beneath it to make the doctor straighten immediately.“Of course.”He turned and hurried toward the emergency ward, his footsteps becoming faster with every second.I watched him disappear through the doors before turning back toward the nurses. The woman behind the desk looked as though she wanted to dis

ASHVIN“Who says -”“Don’t insult me, Ashvin. I had seen four decades by the time you were in your diapers!”I couldn't stop the disbelief from showing on my face. Of all the reasons she could have given me for wandering around the hospital with a handbag while dressed in a hospital gown and slippers, she decided this would be what would save her?“So, tell me. Who are you here to see?”That question made me hesitate. I couldn’t tell her I was here for Everlyn; that would complicate things, especially since she had a daughter. I knew Nana would love Luna, but now wasn’t the time. When it came to Nana, how you brought up something mattered.“I know. But I was going to come see you. It’s just that my colleague here fell sick while at my apartment, so I rushed him here.” I pulled Leo by my side and kicked the back of his leg so he would release a painful groan.“Nurse, we’ve been standing here for a while; this man is now about to collapse!”Leo's head snapped toward me so quickly that I

EVELYNThe first thing I felt was warmth. It felt like someone was holding my hand. The second thing I noticed was the faint smell of antiseptic hanging in the air, mixed with the soft hum of machines somewhere beside me. My body felt heavy, almost as though every muscle had been drained of whatever strength it had left, and when I tried to move, a dull ache spread through my head and settled behind my eyes. For several seconds, I simply lay there with my eyes closed, trying to understand where I was.I slowly opened my eyes, but I had to shut them again because the ceiling was too white. My breathing caught as everything came rushing back, making me sit up straight, ready to make a run for it so I could check on my daughter, but I paused halfway when I noticed Sophie sitting on the chair by the bedside with her hand in mine.So she was the warmth I felt?“Sophie?” I called softly when I noticed she was crying.“Eve?” She looked up, her red eyes from tears and her nose slightly pink.

EVELYN I couldn't look away.Something about the sight was so completely wrong that my mind refused to accept what my eyes were showing me. I had known Ashvin for years. I had lived with his moods, his silences, his coldness, and that terrifying ability he had to make an entire room fall quiet simply by walking into it. I knew the way he looked at people when he was annoyed, the way his jaw tightened when he was angry and the way his eyes became frighteningly empty whenever someone disappointed him. I was his personal secretary for five years, and I could guarantee I only ever saw him smile at his grandmother. I was his secret lover, but even I didn’t get to see that rare smile being targeted at me.“Children are a waste of time. Time I don't have.” His words echoed at the back of my mind as the memory from nine years ago flashed before me. I remembered being so in love that I couldn't resist asking if he saw us getting married and having kids in the future. Normally, I would have s
