Wesley's POVI stared at those three words, feeling nothing.Right then, my boss called."Wesley, we need to finalize the list for the overseas assignment today. I've kept your slot open. "I know three years sounds like a long time, but it'll be a great opportunity for you. Do you want to reconsider?"This time, I didn't turn it down. The application and handoff process took the entire day, including submitting paperwork, signing documents, and getting everything stamped. Some colleagues expressed regret, while others congratulated me. A few even quietly asked if Lindsay and I had a fight.I answered truthfully, "There was no fight. We broke up."As the final stamp came down on the paperwork, I glanced out at the gray, overcast sky. Between the towering skyscrapers, I could just make out the edge of Amber Estate's domed roof in the distance.I looked away and forwarded my flight information to my friend, Eddie Dixon."I'm flying out in two weeks. Want to get together befo

Wesley's POVI stared at Lindsay, unable to believe those words had come out of her mouth. When she first pulled me out of that hellhole, I had spent a long time completely detached from reality. She understood better than anyone what a traumatic, insurmountable scar watching my parents die in that fire had left on me.Back then, she hadn't tried to talk me out of it. She simply accompanied me to the cemetery every single day.At the time, rumors were running rampant about how my parents had brought their fate upon themselves. Some claimed Dad had embezzled funds, while others claimed Mom had been involved in illegal experiments.I nearly had a complete breakdown. Those accusations hadn't just insulted my parents, but they also shattered the last bit of faith I had left in the world. If people like my parents were considered to have "reaped what they sowed", then what was there left in this world that was worth believing in?It had been Lindsay who had stood by my side and

Wesley's POVSoon, everyone left. It took less than ten minutes for the conference room to go from deafeningly noisy to completely silent. The harsh white lights illuminated me and the flash drive in my hand—the flash drive that felt ever so light. Then, out of nowhere, came a burst of applause, followed by the heavy thud of leather shoes on the marble floor.Trent walked in through the side door, completely unhurried."You really are your parents' son. Even that stubborn streak of yours is exactly like theirs. You all refuse to give up until you hit rock bottom."He looked down and studied his nails. "Honestly, when you announced the press conference, Lindsay asked me if I wanted to stop you. It would've only taken one phone call."But after I gave it some thought, I decided that giving you hope, then crushing it with my own hands, would be much more satisfying."He looked up. His smile deepened, but his words were downright cruel. "Oh, by the way, right before your parents di

Third-Person POVThe Morasca residence was huge, but the decor was painfully tacky. When Lindsay stepped through the door, Vincent came out to greet her personally. A wide smile was plastered across his face."Lindsay, you're here! Come in, have a seat."She gave a slight nod as a greeting. At the dinner table, Vincent made small talk about business for a while before shifting gears, his smile growing even wider."Lindsay, you and Trent have known each other for so many years, and your father and I go way back as well. So, I won't beat around the bush with you."He picked up his wine glass and took a sip. "When do you think would be a good time for you and Trent to get married?"Lindsay looked up at him without answering.Assuming she was considering it, Vincent continued, "I've already spoken with your grandfather. He hasn't explicitly agreed to it, but he didn't refuse either. You know how Trent is. He's liked you since you were kids. "Running out on the engagement back th

Third-Person POV"The renovations on the Crestwood mansion are complete," Frank said, carefully observing Lindsay's expression. "Everything was done according to your instructions, using the original blueprints from the Johnson family's old home. And the items the court seized back then have all been bought back at the auctions, one by one, and set up inside."You can move in anytime."Lindsay nodded without saying a word.Once Frank stepped out, she stood up and walked over to the window. She'd bought that mansion over in Crestwood two years ago. Back then, Wesley had mentioned in passing that there used to be a magnolia tree in the courtyard of his childhood home. And every time it blossomed, the whole yard would smell sweet. She had simply said, "Is that so?", and then dropped the subject. But afterward, she had people search the entire city for magnolia trees. She then selected the finest one and had it transplanted into the yard of the Crestwood mansion. For the mansi
