Chapter 1

Wesley Johnson's POV

So, it had all just been a bet.

The base of my finger was turning numb. The ring was slightly too big, so I had to keep my ring finger slightly splayed just to stop it from slipping off—much like my relationship with Lindsay Shire.

I relaxed my hand, allowing the ring to hit the floor with a sharp clack, shattering the fragile illusion of peace we'd been maintaining.

"Next time there's a painting you can't afford to bid on, just let me know. I can handle a sum like that," I said.

"There's no need to play these cruel little games with me."

Lindsay, who had been idly turning the painting over in her hands, finally stopped. A clear look of displeasure crossed her face.

In the past, whenever she so much as frowned, I'd swallow my feelings, back off, and start apologizing.

This time, however, I didn't give in.

As the silence grew suffocating, Trent Morasca let out a mocking laugh.

"If you can't take a joke, just say so. Don't make me look like the bad guy. It's just a joke, and you're blowing it way out of proportion.

"Come on, Lindsay, let's go eat. Don't we have a dinner reservation?

"What are you guys looking at him for? When has he ever not come running after us?"

The first time I'd heard something like that, I was terrified.

With my face covered in frosting, I apologized, convinced that I was overreacting and had no right to be mad.

They were all Lindsay's friends, after all, and they were just having some birthday fun.

Even when I eventually had to cut my hair short later because there was so much frosting stuck in it, I told myself it was no big deal.

As the group brushed past me, I leaned down, picked up my luggage, and headed in the opposite direction.

I returned to Amber Estate, packed up everything I'd left behind the last time, and asked the elderly butler, Frank Leopold, to ship them for me. Then I sent Lindsay a text message to break up with her.

When I looked up, I saw Frank hesitating.

"Mr. Johnson… Are you not coming back anymore?" he asked. "I can tell Ms. Shire feels differently about you than she does about anyone else. She and Mr. Morasca… They're just childhood friends."

Frank didn't know what had happened at the airport today, and he assumed I was still upset about the thing that made me move out the last time.

In truth, I'd gotten over it a long time ago.

In the ten years I'd been with Lindsay, Trent was at the center of almost every single fight we had. Whenever things got heated, she'd throw out a cold "Think whatever you want" and disappear.

She wouldn't reply to my texts or my calls, and the only way I could find out anything about her was through Trent's social media posts.

And every fight we had always ended with me being the one to make peace.

Today at the airport was the first time she'd ever come looking for me after a fight. So even though my heart had long since grown numb, it still stirred, only to find out it had all just been a bet.

Avoiding the subject, I merely said, "I'll have to trouble you with these."

As I stepped out of Amber Estate, my eyes fell on the bench beneath the covered walkway. Its crooked, uneven slats had an almost laughably clumsy look to them.

In that split second, tears welled up in my eyes.

Lindsay had built that bench for me herself during our third year together.

She had always been stubborn. She could never bring herself to say she liked me outright, so I had been the person to pursue her and the one who confessed my feelings first.

After a while, it started to get to me.

It just so happened that she was particularly busy with one thing or another during that time, and I barely ever saw her.

I spent a long time turning everything over in my head, until one night, when all those emotions finally poured out. And for the first time, Lindsay, who was usually so composed, looked visibly flustered.

In the end, she brought me to Amber Estate and showed me the bench she'd built with her own hands.

She knew I liked waiting for her at the front door, often crouching there until my legs went numb. Just a few days prior, I'd gotten up too fast and had taken a nasty fall.

She hadn't offered a single word of comfort back then, only looking at me coldly and saying that I didn't need to wait for her anymore.

But the cuts and scrapes on her hands from woodworking revealed a rare glimpse of her genuine affection.

I ran my hand over the back of the bench.

Back then, I'd teased her, saying the bench wobbled so much that I'd likely fall right off it. At some point afterward, she'd secretly reinforced it, and now it was sturdy and solid.

Frank was right. In the beginning, Lindsay truly had treated me differently. But that was only before Trent came back to the country.

My phone vibrated. It was Lindsay, finally replying to my breakup message.

"As you please."

Wesley's POVCaroline was standing behind me."What are you doing here?" I asked. "I thought you said you couldn't be bothered with these kinds of events.""I couldn't, originally," she said, taking a sip of her drink as her gaze settled on my face. "But then I thought about how it might be tiring for you to handle all these people alone.""So you came?""Yeah."I looked at her and suddenly chuckled."What are you laughing at?" she asked."At you," I answered. "You really have an awkward way of showing you care."She raised an eyebrow but didn't deny it. After a couple of seconds of silence, she suddenly asked, "So, what were the two of you talking about on the balcony earlier?"I froze for a moment before it clicked. She had seen me with Lindsay on the balcony."You saw all that?" I asked."Yeah," she said. "From one of the private rooms on the second floor."I didn't say anything. The night breeze drifted in through the open window, stirring the strands of hair across h

Wesley's POVInstantly, my eyes stung with tears."Where did you find this photo?" I asked."In the Morasca family's safe," Lindsay answered, her voice calm. "Vincent took it from your house back then. There's a lot of other stuff, too. Your father's handwritten notes, lab records, your mother's research notes—they were all there.""I had someone organize them. They'll be delivered to your place in Bellmonte next week."I clenched the photograph so tightly my knuckles turned white. After a long pause, I took a deep breath and looked at her."Why are you doing this?""Because they belonged to your father," she answered. "They should be returned to you.""What I'm asking is…" I enunciated each word slowly, as if I were asking on behalf of my past self. "Why did you take these things from the Morascas? Weren't you working with them? Weren't you protecting Trent?"She fell silent for several seconds. When she spoke again, her voice was so quiet that it was almost lost in the wind.

Wesley's POVIt was evening when my flight touched down in Harborville.Outside the window, the city I had fled a year and a half ago was bathed in the warm gold of the setting sun. Skyscrapers towered above, and traffic flowed unceasingly. Everything looked exactly as it had when I left. But I knew something had changed—me.The project review meeting took place at the Harborville International Convention Center. Dobbs Biopharmaceuticals' ADC drug development project had just passed its regional Phase 3 clinical trials, bringing us one major step closer to bringing the drug to the market. The celebration dinner was set for 7:00 pm at the third-floor ballroom of the Crownton Hotel.I changed into a black suit with a subtle pattern and styled my hair carefully. The man staring back at me in the mirror looked nothing like the man who had stumbled through the airport a year and a half ago, desperate to run away.Eddie was waiting for me at the entrance to the ballroom. The momen

Wesley's POVI watched as Caroline ordered dishes and conversed with the owner in his native language with practiced ease. Suddenly, everything felt a little surreal. This woman was like a book. Every page revealed something completely new. After dinner, she drove me back to my apartment. When we pulled up downstairs, she didn't turn off the engine right away. Instead, she opened the glove compartment, took out an envelope, and handed it to me."What is this?" I asked as I opened it.It was a project proposal for an early-stage ADC drug development project initiated by Dobbs Biopharmaceuticals, with Harborville Institute of Biomedical Sciences and a venture capital firm from a neighboring country as partners.Under the "Project Lead" line, my name was printed in full.My head snapped up to look at her. I opened my mouth, but no words came out."You'll be running this project," she said. "The team is already in place. The head of R&D is one of Professor Murdoch's students, and

Wesley's POVHowever, I didn't ask questions. I just grabbed my car keys and headed out the door. When I reached Rivermark, Caroline was sitting on a bench by the river. The night air was chilly, but she was only wearing a thin blouse, with the sleeves rolled up to her forearms and her collar hanging loosely open.I had never seen her like this before."Ms. Dobbs," I said as I walked over and stopped in front of her.She looked up at me.Under the streetlights, her long, deep-set eyes harbored an emotion I'd never seen before—a vacant sense of confusion."Why did you drink so much?" I asked, squatting down next to her and reaching for the glass in her hand. But she pulled away from my hand, her words slightly slurred. "Today's the anniversary of my dad's death."I froze mid-motion."Every year on this day," she started, looking at me with unfocused eyes. "I come here and sit for a while."He died in this river."I followed her gaze toward the water.Under the Bellmonte n

Wesley's POVProfessor Murdoch's eyes lit up. "Michael Johnson? The one from Harborville?"I nodded, feeling a warmth in my chest. I hadn't expected Dad's name to be still remembered here in Bellmonte, thousands of miles away from home. All morning, Caroline took me from one breakout session to another. She barely spoke to me, but whenever I struggled to keep up, she'd subtly slow her pace or shoot me a glance to draw my attention to whoever was speaking.I followed behind her like a shadow, observing how she interacted with people. She never wasted time on small talk. It was just a handshake, an introduction, an opinion, and an exchange of information—the whole process was smooth and efficient, without a single unnecessary word.It wasn't until lunch that she finally spoke to me."How are you holding up?""It's information overload," I admitted. "Some of these technical terms I've never even heard before."She shot me a glance. "How old were you when your father started te
