"I won't allow this!" Willow cried, completely losing control as she shouted into the phone. "Caius, please don't do this. I'll come to you! I'll book a flight right now! Just give me your address!" But all she heard in response was the rapid beeping of the disconnected line. Willow slowly lowered her phone. Then she folded over the steering wheel and sobbed. Meanwhile, after ending the call, the warmth of my phone still lingered against my fingertips. Taking a deep breath, I pushed open the break room door, only to nearly collide with Eileen Williams, my coworker, who was walking out with a cup of coffee in hand. She blinked her bright blue eyes, then leaned in with a teasing grin. "Were you just on the phone with someone special? I've never seen you spend that long on a personal call since you started here." Willow watched the cab carrying Caius merge into traffic and disappear into the distance without a backward glance. A deafening buzz filled her ears. She clutched the edge of my shirt as though I might disappear the moment she let go. Her bloodshot eyes were frightening, and her voice was hoarse. "I'm coming to the hospital with you. I'll take care of you." I had lost enough blood to feel dizzy, and I didn't have the energy to argue with her. "Fine." I nodded. My words seemed to be a pardon. She quickly wiped away her tears and carefully helped me into the ambulance. The entire ride, she held my hand, her palm slick with cold sweat, repeatedly asking the nurse, "He's really okay, right? Would he need a transfusion?"I closed my
