~Avery’s Pov~ I woke before dawn everyday, while the whole house slept peacefully. I scrubbed the floor on my hands and knees until they burned with pain. By the time I finished, I could see my reflection staring back at me.Sixteen years of this had taught me one thing. I was never good enough in this house. “Good morning mom.” I greeted my mom, Lenora Greymoor. But instead of answering she looked at me with disgust. “Hope breakfast is served?” Usual response, “yes mom.” I smiled but she looked at me disgustingly. She ran a finger over the dining table, noticing the dust. “Why is there dust on this table, Avery?” she asked coldly, she always finds fault in everything I did, I have grown used to her hatred. “Sorry mom, I will clean it right away.” I hurried to the table to clean it, A sharp slap landed across my cheek before I could take another step. "Worthless girl, Can't you do one thing right? If we ate at this filthy table, we'd all end up sick.” She yelled at me. "Mom, what

~Avery’s Pov~I ran. The screams behind me slowly grew fainter until they were swallowed by the silence of the forest. The only noise I heard was bird chirping.Branches whipped against my face, and sharp twigs scratched my arms and legs, leaving thin cuts across my skin. I didn't stop. I couldn't. If the guards caught me, I was dead.My lungs burned with every breath, and my legs screamed in protest, but fear kept me moving. I stumbled over roots and pushed through thick bushes, desperate to put as much distance as possible between myself and Oakridge.I didn't know where I was going. I only knew I had to keep running, and somehow, I felt like I had more strength than I should have. My legs kept carrying me forward even though I had been running for what felt like hours. Branches scratched my arms, thorns caught on my clothes, and stones cut into the soles of my feet, but I barely felt any of it.All I could think of was getting far away from Oakridge, from the eyes of everyone who sa

~Avery's POV~I opened my eyes and looked around. The place didn't look familiar. Did the guards bring me here? But this place was too beautiful to be a dungeon. It looked more like a royal chamber, but who would bring me to a royal chamber?I tried getting upright, but my whole body was hurting, so I couldn't sit upright. I just lay there, staring at the decor in the room. Then I heard footsteps approaching. I closed my eyes and pretended to still be sleeping. “Is she awake yet?” a man asked. The voice didn't sound familiar. “Not yet, my prince,” another man answered.Did he just say “my prince”? So I really am in a royal chamber. Did the Prince find me in the forest and bring me here? I opened my eyes slowly and acted as if I had just woken up. I met a pair of piercing blue eyes looking at me. He was handsome. He was the most handsome man I had ever seen.“She’s awake,” the other man said. From how he was dressed, I could tell he was the physician..“Where am I?” I asked. The handsom

“What will happen to the girl if you find her?” I finally managed to ask. Everyone seemed so focused on finding her, yet no one had stopped to ask what would happen once they caught her. Even my father looked interested in hearing the answer. The High Mage's expression remained cold.“She will be sacrificed to the Voidborn. It is the only way to keep it from being released.” My father glanced at me. He knew from the look on my face that I wasn't going to accept that answer easily.“There has to be another way,” I said. “You're telling me the only solution is to sacrifice an innocent girl?” The High Mage lowered his gaze.“There is no other option, my prince.”“But…”“Enough, Theron.” His voice hardened. “That girl has become a threat to the entire kingdom. If sacrificing her keeps the Voidborn sealed, then that is what must be done. We cannot fight the Voidborn if it is released.” I clenched my jaw.My father had already ordered the guards to search every part of Oakridge and the surr

~Theron's POV~I was relieved when I found Avery. For the past few hours, I had been searching the forest, wondering what could have happened to her. When I finally saw her sleeping beneath the tree, I couldn't help but feel angry that she had put herself in such danger, but when she woke up and told me the truth, that anger disappeared. She didn't deserve to be sacrificed, she was too innocent for that. Avery didn't even understand what had happened to her. She didn't know why the relic reacted to her, and she had never learned magic before. Yet the High Mage had already decided that her life was the price to keep the Voidborn sealed.I couldn't accept that, I had promised her that I would protect her, and I meant it.I still remembered the look in her eyes when I said those words. For the first time since I met her, the fear in her expression seemed to disappear, even if only for a moment. She trusted me.I couldn't betray that trust. “Come on,” I said, helping her onto my horse.Sh
