MIRA.(POV)Control is not an illusion; it is simply a discipline most people are too lazy to maintain.Every morning at precisely 6:45 AM, I unlock the heavy glass doors of the Grandmaster Youth Academy on 72nd Street. The air inside always smells the same: polished oak, lemon oil, and the faint, dry dust of old textbooks. I breathe it in like oxygen. While the rest of Manhattan rushes through autumn downpours with crushed umbrellas and spilled lattes, my corner of the city stays impeccably structured.Sixty-four squares. Thirty-two pieces. Zero unpredictable variables.By 7:00 AM, my dark hair was pinned back into a razor-sharp low bun not a single flyaway surviving the heavy-hold hairspray and my tailored charcoal blazer was buttoned clean over my silk blouse. I walked through the main hall, adjusting the timber chess sets on the tournament tables until every board was set to the standard starting position: White on the right, light square in the bottom right corner, kings and quee

MIRA.(pov).Silence in a shared office is heavier than an argument. For three days following the photograph incident, Daniel and I operated in a state of frosty, hyper-efficient cold war. We spoke only when necessary, addressed each other as "Mr. Cross" and "Ms. Alonso" in front of the kids, and kept our eyes fixed strictly on our respective sides of the desk.It was exhausting. It was also completely ineffective, because the Regional Qualifier in Philadelphia was two weeks away, and our top sixteen-year-old player, Marcus, Vance Arthur’s nephew was playing like a man who had forgotten how his own hands worked. It was 7:30 PM on a Thursday. Rain was lashing against the high windows of the second-floor office. The rest of the building was dark and quiet, but our office was illuminated by the warm, harsh light of a single desk lamp.Marcus sat at a small folding table set up between our desks, his head buried in his hands. On the board between us, his position was an absolute catastroph

MIRA.(Pov).The hearing room at the Pennsylvania Convention Center felt like an interrogation chamber.Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting a sickly pale glow across the long mahogany table where three regional ethics committee members sat with cold, unblinking eyes.I stood at the podium in my charcoal blazer, my hair pinned back into its usual rigid bun, though my fingers were shaking so violently I had to press my palms flat against the wood to hide it.Beside me, Daniel sat in a folding chair, dressed in his dark suit. He looked terrible. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and his jaw was set in a tight, rigid line. Ever since I had confronted him in the motel room, ever since I had thrown that resignation letter at his chest and walked out to the car without waiting for him, we hadn't exchanged a single word."Ms. Alonso," the head of the ethics panel, a sharp-faced woman named Evelyn Reed, said, tapping her pen against her tablet. "The committee has reviewed the anonymous di

MIRA (POV)The metallic taste of duct tape sat heavy on my tongue. My hands were bound behind my back with heavy plastic zip-ties, pulling my shoulders into an awkward, painful posture against the cold metal legs of an industrial folding chair. We were in the upper gallery of the Old City Chess Club, a historical, three-story brownstone that Vance’s family had owned for two generations. Dust motes danced in the pale shafts of afternoon light filtering through the high arched windows. Down on the main floor below, dozens of empty chess tables sat lined up like headstones in a graveyard.Arthur Vance sat opposite me at a small mahogany table, pouring amber liquid from a crystal decanter into a short glass."Your father had the exact same look in his eyes when the board voted him out," Vance said conversationally, swirling the whiskey in his glass. "That desperate, stubborn belief that intellect alone can overcome institutional capital. It’s a quaint delusion, Mira."I glared at him thro

MIRA (POV)Daniel stood motionless as the crowd of passengers flowed around him like water around a stone. He looked at me, at my wild, unbound hair, my ruined heels, my torn blazer, the tears streaming freely down my face.He pulled his ticket back from the conductor’s hand, stepped out of the line, and walked toward me.Each step was heavy, deliberate. He stopped three feet away, the canvas bag hanging limply at his side."Mira," he said, his voice raw, cracking slightly. "What are you doing here? You should be at the hotel celebrating. You own the academy now.""You left a letter," I panted, my chest heaving as I tried to catch my breath. "You left a legal resignation letter.""It's what you wanted," Daniel said softly, looking down at the marble floor between us. "You were right, Mira. At the motel... everything you said was right. I make decisions without asking. I drag people into my storms. I ruined my own career in Zurich, and I almost ruined yours today."He took a deep, pain
