I was still trapped beneath that dark, intense gaze. I couldn't tell whether Commander John Chase could see the horror and shame filling my thoughts and heart in the dim light of the room, and if he could, what did it make him feel?He took a deep breath.“Don't know what to say, Princess?” Chase asked.I sighed at the inevitable.“How can I look into your eyes without seeing the blood you spilled?”“And for whom did I spill that blood?” the Commander asked. His question was completely unfair. I had never asked anyone to fight for my hand.“How dare you try to put that blood on my hands? You killed for power!” I shouted at him.Suddenly, his hands shoved me backward onto the bed, his weight pressing me into the mattress. I gasped, struggling to breathe, but then his mouth claimed mine again. This time, with more aggression, his hands slipped beneath my dress, drawing a horrified scream from me.Was he really going to do this?I tried to resist, turning my face away from his kiss, but

I woke up with John Chase gently shaking me. When I opened my eyes, I realized he was tense. I looked around, searching for some sign that morning had already come, but in that windowless room, it was difficult to tell.“Is it time to leave?” I asked him, but he was already on his feet, staring at the door.He pressed a finger to his lips, giving me a clear signal to be silent. Then he slowly walked toward the door, narrowed his eyes, and suddenly someone burst through it.John Chase was thrown across the room and slammed into the wall. When I looked at the figure standing in the doorway, responsible for what had just happened, I screamed. My entire being screamed, and I couldn't believe my own eyes.A gigantic creature stood in the doorway, exactly as the legends described them: enormous red eyes, massive fangs capable of tearing through anything, and claws sharper than swords. It was tall and muscular, despite its body being covered in fur and having an entirely animalistic appearan

Daniel placed me on his own horse and took me toward the mansion. On horseback, it was a quick journey, and I didn't say much. I was still in shock because of the man he had killed right in front of me. I tried to summon memories of the summers I had spent here in Riviera, of the skinny Daniel who had been several inches shorter than me. That Daniel would have thrown up at the mere thought of killing a man over an insult. I wished he had simply punched the man, but take his life? And the calm way he had done it... it sent chills down my spine. When we arrived at the Edwards estate, Daniel dismounted and immediately pulled me down by the waist. I looked at the enormous building painted dark green with white details. The Duke's house had always been very impressive. As soon as we climbed the veranda steps, the servants came toward us. When they saw me, their eyes widened, unable to hide their surprise."Show your respect. You are standing before Her Royal Highness, Princess Helena of Ho

When my gaze fell upon the Commander, sitting casually on the windowsill, my heart flooded with relief, because the dangerous energy emanating from Daniel, warning me to run from him, was now dissipating considerably. In its place, however, I felt hostility coming from both men. Although the Commander wore a relaxed smile, the hostility I felt emanating from him was almost suffocating. It was like a shadow stretching across the entire room, with Daniel as its only target."Commander!" I exclaimed, rising to my feet, unable to hide the relief in my voice.Chase did not answer me. He merely cast me a quick glance before turning his attention back to the Duke."How the hell are you here? We're on the second floor!" The Duke rose as well, his posture tense, his eyes red, and it was now quite obvious that he had been drinking heavily.Chase settled more comfortably against the windowsill and crossed his arms. He took a deep breath before answering."I don't know whether it's appropriate fo

When we reached the stables, Chase quickly found a horse that looked quite fast. He effortlessly threw me onto the animal and climbed up after me. He pressed me against him and urged the horse into a run. We raced out of the stable into the cold night. Even after we had moved away from the property, it was still possible to see the glow of the torches in the sky. Their number frightened me, and their furious cries could still be heard even from a distance. Then the sound of swords cutting through the air reached us. I shuddered when I looked back and saw that a battle had begun between the duke's men and the pagans."We need to go back! There are too many of them. Daniel is going to die!""I'm not that lucky, Princess."I turned around on the horse and elbowed him—or at least I tried to—but he caught my arm, and the horse suddenly came to a stop. It neighed and reared wildly onto its hind legs. With that movement, we both fell from the horse. I would have been badly hurt if the comman
