Chapter 1

I never thought this would happen. I am the princess of the Volkov family. Yet my own driver left me on the street. His clueless girlfriend called me a "bitch" and a "parasite."I lit a cigarette after calling Cassian. I watched the traffic. I leaned against a streetlamp, swallowing my anger. I waited for Cassian to clean up this mess. He is the sharpest blade in the Volkov family. Men piss themselves at his name. He never fails. Traitors beg for death when he catches them.Twenty minutes later. The roar of three black SUVs approached. Their headlights cut through the night. They were like hungry hounds tracking blood. I smirked. Crystal, you really messed with the wrong people today. But right before the convoy arrived, tires screeched. My Cadillac pulled up.Marco tumbled out of the driver's seat. The passenger seat was empty. Crystal wasn't there. He was pale and shaking. "Miss Aurora! You called Cassian?! You called the family hit squad to kill me?!""Are you giving me or

Chapter 2

I thought about the past month. At first, Crystal just sat quietly in the passenger seat. Things went wrong when she started posting crazy amounts of photos on social media. I froze when I saw her account. In the pictures, she leaned back on the leather seats of my Cadillac. She wore sunglasses and pouted. The caption read: #MafiaWife #NYCSocialite. Strangers praised her luck in the comments. They said she caught a rich guy. I stared at the photo. My finger hovered over the screen. I couldn't process it. This was my car. How dare she show it off like her own trophy? But I held back. I told myself she was just a vain little girl. Let it go. What really annoyed me was her open hostility. Every time I got in the car, she turned around. She looked me up and down like prey. Then she scoffed, pulled out her perfume, and sprayed it hard in my direction. "What's that smell?" she pinched her nose in disgust. "Smells cheap. Disgusting."I sat behind her, laundering millions for the fa

The sharp smell of booze and smoke hit me. I stood at the door. I couldn't believe my eyes. Cigarette butts and burn marks littered my handmade Italian Fendi rug. It cost hundreds of thousands. It looked like a zombie frat party. Dark champagne stains ruined my expensive Minotti leather couch. Traces of white powder were everywhere. Champagne bottles tipped over on the coffee table. Straws for snorting coke lay beside them. This was my home. My only safe haven. I stood there, digging my nails into my palms. Music blared in the living room. Strange men and women sprawled all over my couches. One woman lay on the silk rug my father gave me. Her shoes were tossed aside. Crystal sat right in the middle of the couch. She wore a designer silk robe I had never worn. I knew the price tag. Twelve thousand dollars. It was a custom piece for Fashion Week next month. She crossed her legs and leaned back lazily. Her friends kissed her ass. "Crystal, you are so lucky," a girl with purple

Chapter 4

I took out my phone. My face was blank. I dialed the number. "Cassian," my voice was like ice. "Bring your men to my penthouse. Now."Smash! I didn't finish. The purple-haired girl lunged at me. She slapped the phone out of my hand. It hit the floor hard. The screen shattered into a spiderweb. "Who are you trying to fool?" Crystal crossed her arms. She looked down at me. "You think you can just scare me?"Her friends joined in. "She's just a freeloader. And she's calling for backup?""She just wants to extort us. A pure scam.""Cheap trash like her is only good for serving people."The filthy insults rained down. I didn't care. I stared at my broken phone. Murderous rage climbed in my chest inch by inch. Crystal seemed to gain confidence from my silence. She stepped closer. Suddenly, she grabbed me by the collar. "Oh," her eyes locked on my chest. They lit up. "What's this? Looks expensive."My heart dropped. It was an antique platinum pocket watch. I wore it on a chain around

Chapter 5

The second those words left my mouth, the guy I’d kicked to his knees let out a roar and lunged at me.I dodged, but his flailing arm grazed my cheek.A slight sting.I thumbed the blood off my lip. Looking at the bright red on my fingertip, my eyes went dead cold. The engines downstairs had cut off. Then, the chime of my private elevator pierced the room.Ding.The doors didn't slide open smoothly like usual.Bang. A combat boot kicked the heavy metal doors wide open. The floorboards actually shook.Pure, murderous energy choked the room, overpowering the stench of cheap perfume and booze.Cassian wasn't in his usual tailored suit.Strapped in a black tactical vest, he stalked out of the elevator like a caged beast out for blood.Behind him? Over twenty fully armed Mafia soldiers. The Family’s elite execution squad.Red laser sights instantly painted the living room.Dozens of red dots locked dead center on the foreheads and chests of Crystal and her little entourage.Dead silence.Th

The guy with the gun to his head totally broke.A puddle of piss seeped through his pants, dripping onto my expensive Fendi rug.But Crystal’s stupidity? Way more nauseating than the stench of piss. She stared wide-eyed at Cassian, then at me. Suddenly, she screeched."You think making up a fake name scares me?" She gripped my black card for dear life. She straightened her back, trying to keep up that pathetic arrogance."Princess of the Volkovs? What a joke! Everyone in New York knows my boyfriend, Marco, is the sole heir!"She pointed right at my nose, her voice shrill. "I am the future Donna! You're just a broke relative who can't even afford a car. You hired some extras with plastic guns to steal my spot?"Cassian didn't even bother moving the gun from piss-pants' head.He turned and looked at Crystal like she was clinically brain-dead."Heir to the Volkov Family?"Cassian actually laughed."Now that's breaking news." His voice dripped with mockery. "Our Don is currently at his pri

Chapter 7

"Marco! Open your eyes!" Crystal gripped his blood-soaked collar, shaking him frantically."Tell these losers! Tell them you're the real boss! Order your men to shoot them!"Marco, beaten black and blue, was literally coughing up blood.Rocked by her violent shaking, he struggled to open his one good eye.His gaze bypassed Crystal’s twisted face. It landed on the rug a few feet away.Right where the blood met the spilled wine, lay the shattered pieces of a pocket watch. The yellowed photo inside had been crushed in half by a stiletto. The late Don's keepsake. The token the entire Volkov Family revered. In the Mafia world, touching—let alone destroying—the Don’s keepsake meant only one thing.Cement shoes. A one-way ticket to the bottom of the Hudson.Marco's pupils shrank to pinpricks."Marco?" Crystal was still screaming, completely oblivious to her death sentence. "Say something! Are you just drunk? Give the order!""Order my ass."He lunged up from the floor and backhanded Crystal r

Chapter 8

Marco’s death sentence was still hanging in the air when Crystal crawled up from the rug.Hand over her swollen cheek, she pointed her other hand at Marco, her voice shrill."What the hell is going on?!" she shrieked, spitting as she yelled. "What the fuck did you just say? Spared you?! What does that mean?! Marco! Explain it right now!"Marco cringed on the floor, like a dog with a broken spine.Over twenty guns were still locked on him. Red lasers danced across his sweaty forehead. He opened his mouth, but nothing came out.Cassian impatiently stepped up, jamming the gun barrel right into his temple."The Princess is listening," Cassian’s voice was sharp as a blade. "Can't answer? I'll answer for you. With your brains on the floor.""I'll tell her! I'll tell her!" Marco completely broke. Snot and tears streaming down his face, he knelt on the rug, clutching his head."I'm not the heir..." His voice shook so badly it was barely a whisper. "I'm nothing... I'm not even an Associate... I

Chapter 9

"You said... you're just a driver?"Crystal was still mumbling like a broken record.I had zero interest in watching her break down twice. The only thing untouched in the living room was a single leather armchair. I walked over, sat down, and crossed my legs.Cassian was suddenly by my side. He handed me a cigar and a lighter.I placed the cigar between my lips and let him light it.As the thick smoke curled upward, not a single gun barrel in the room twitched. This was the order I knew.I didn't need a court. No jury. No one to hand me "justice."In this underworld, I am the law.I slowly exhaled a cloud of smoke, looking down at the group of shivering twenty-somethings on their knees."Trespassing on private Volkov Family territory without permission." I held up one finger."Impersonating made men to commit fraud." Two fingers."Destroying the Don's token." My voice dropped to a lethal register. I glanced at the shattered pocket watch."And," I paused, locking eyes with Crystal. "Att

Chapter 10

Hearing the offer, the shivering crew exchanged a look.Nobody spoke. But the cold glint of that knife on the table wrote the answer plainly on their faces. The purple-haired girl moved first.I watched her slowly bend down. Her trembling fingers brushed against an unbroken champagne bottle on the floor."What... what are you doing?" Crystal scrambled backward, terror finally sinking in. "Amber? You wouldn't really...""Shut up!"Amber shot up, bottle raised high."If you hadn't been playing pretend Mafia Wife, we wouldn't be in this mess, you bitch!"She swung the bottle down.Smash.Crystal’s forehead split open. Blood streamed down her face, mixing with the nosebleed I’d given her earlier. A sickening crimson."Die, you selfish slut!"Amber shrieked, letting out a month's worth of resentment from being bossed around by Crystal, all in one swing. The second the first drop of blood hit the floor, any remaining hesitation vanished. The people begging on their knees seconds ago pounced
