Lena was found unconscious on the shore of Lake Union. She'd swallowed sleeping pills, then walked into the winter lake. A jogger called 911, and firefighters pulled her from the water. The first overdose could be explained as a breakdown. The second sent a message that couldn't have been clearer: if Julian left, she would die.Diane confronted Julian in the hospital hallway, grabbed his collar, and screamed, "Are you happy now? You drove Lena to the edge over a dead baby!"Several reporters were nearby. That afternoon, a tech gossip account published audio clips and a long article.Secret wife uses miscarriage as leverage to force NorthStar CEO to abandon his depressed ex; Lena attempts suicide a second time.My medical privacy was blown wide open. The article included the date of the miscarriage, the eleven phone calls, and details from the mediation, even a blurry photo of my hospital wristband.Diane admitted she'd given the recording to the media. Before her second attempt, Lena h

The NorthStar board investigation lasted two weeks.Julian was removed from the acquisition committee, temporarily lost some of his voting rights, and was ordered to undergo an independent review. The board found that he'd allowed his personal life to affect his business decisions when he suspended the Cascadia partnership. NorthStar reopened the partnership review and offered compensation to the employees affected. He didn't lose the company, but he lost some of the control that had always mattered so much to him.On the day of the Green Lake final-round pitch, the client suddenly cut the budget by twenty percent. Harbor & Pine had three hours to redo the proposal.Maya, Noah, and I turned off our phones and went back to the drawing board. We cut the expensive installations and focused on flexible community spaces, clear private areas, and a plan that would cost less to maintain. The proposal theme was a single line:Boundaries are what make a public space truly belong to everyone.Th

On day ninety, the final hearing was held in King County Superior Court. The judge confirmed that we had both entered the agreement willingly, that the terms were fair, and that our marriage was irretrievably broken. Julian didn't object. When the divorce was finalized, the judge said, "I wish you both the best going forward."Outside the courthouse, Julian asked, "That night at Blue Heron. Did you really not think about starting over? Not even once?""For a second."A flicker of light came into his eyes."Then I realized it wasn't a new beginning. It was just an old habit."The light went out again."Are you leaving Seattle?""No. My friends, my company, my apartment, and my clients are all here. I'm not letting a failed marriage chase me out of my own city."Snow was falling outside the courthouse, leaving a thin layer of ice on the steps. My body remembered that fall before my mind did, and I hesitated.Julian stopped too. He didn't touch me."Want me to call a car?""Someone's pick

The following Christmas, Noah and I went to Leavenworth to visit his family.A familiar black car was parked outside the inn. Julian stood in the snow with an old cardboard box at his feet. Inside were the wooden reindeer my grandmother had carved, along with glass ornaments and silver bells. I'd thought they'd been lost when I moved out."Thank you."I turned to Noah. "This is my ex-husband, Julian."The husband I'd once had to keep secret was now simply my ex.Julian shook Noah's hand. "The Green Lake project turned out great.""Thanks."There was no hostility this time, no need to compete. Maybe truly moving on meant neither of them needed me to prove who had won."I won't stay long." Julian nudged the box toward me. "I just wanted to make sure you're doing well.""I am."Snow settled on his shoulders. This time, he didn't beg. He didn't offer me a house, shares, or a ring."Is there any chance for us, even years from now?"Noah didn't answer for me."Someday, I might choose to buil
