Chapter 1

Elise's POVJoshua Ford, my husband and the heir to Kingsbury's largest fortune, reached over, took the phone I was holding up, and tossed it onto the coffee table. He glanced at the video playing on the screen and casually turned it off."Honestly, I've been a little tired these past few years," he said out of nowhere, rubbing his temples. His expression was unchanged."I'm in my 30s now. Young women still get my blood pumping. I meant to keep it from you forever, but now that you've found out, I don't have to hide it just to spare your feelings anymore."Joshua sighed, looking as though a weight had just been lifted off his shoulders.Every word out of his mouth pierced my chest like a needle. It hurt so badly I could barely stand straight.I forced a faint smile. "Joshua, this joke isn't funny. Just tell me none of it is real, and I'll believe you."The look he gave me was complicated—pity, impatience, everything except guilt. He went into the room, returned with an agreeme

Chapter 2

I sat numb in the living room all night.Overnight, news that Joshua was seeing someone new dominated the entertainment headlines. The internet was flooded with stories about the two of them, from the yacht he'd bought her for a fortune to footage of him speeding across a bridge over the river with her.Even the comment sections were blowing up.[So much for love. It always ends the same way.][How many rich guys are actually faithful? Isn't it normal for them to have a few women on the side? I just never thought Joshua Ford would be one of them.][Everyone in Kingsbury knew how crazy he used to be about Elise Jensen. The fireworks on their wedding day went on forever.][Those fireworks cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for just a 15-minute show, and they kept them going for three days and three nights.]It was as if Joshua had deliberately made sure I saw every one of those stories. The countless comments made my chest tighten.Back when Ford Group relisted on the stock ma

Chapter 3

When I came to in a hospital bed, Joshua was nowhere in sight.A doctor stood beside me, frowning down at my chart."Where's your family?" he asked.I shook my head weakly. Without another word, he moved on to the next bed.A young couple was in the bed next to mine. The woman kept nagging the man, mostly scolding him for being careless, but the love in her eyes was pure.It was the same way I used to look at Joshua. My phone buzzed on the nightstand, one anonymous text after another. Every single message contained photos of Joshua and Tina getting matching tattoos, bungee jumping, praying at a church, and watching the northern lights.Joshua had been right. With Tina, he was happier than before."Ms. Jensen, being young really does have its advantages, wouldn't you agree?"The provocative undertone in Tina's message left me with no way to argue back.…It wasn't until my third day in the hospital that Joshua finally showed up.He sat down by my bedside and looked at me, se

Chapter 4

I was supposed to be discharged the next day.Joshua called not long after he left the hospital. Any trace of gentleness from the past few days was completely absent from his voice."Tina's been suspended from university. Did you put someone up to this? She's threatening to kill herself now! If anything happens to her, Elise, don't blame me for showing no mercy."He hung up before I could say a word.News about Tina spread like wildfire. Trending posts popped up one after another.[You all keep calling her a homewrecker, but where's the proof? It looks like Joshua has wanted to divorce Elise for a long time.][A woman who isn't afraid to go after what she wants is the real heroine here. Elise is just petty—going after someone that young.][Hasn't Elise just been freeloading all this time? She stays home as a housewife. Women like that are useless.]The entire internet had turned on me.Then, Joshua, who rarely posted on social media, shared an update of his own.[My relations

Chapter 5

Joshua's POVI stood there watching Elise leave, then looked down at the divorce agreement in my hand and ran a hand through my hair in frustration.I should have been happy. I was the one who'd fallen out of love with her and wanted her gone. Now that she'd finally signed the papers, I should have been thrilled. Instead, I felt like something was missing inside me.I shoved the agreement into a drawer, as if hiding it away meant I wouldn't have to face it.Just then, Tina called again."Josh, did you get that thing at my university sorted out? I'm so sorry to be a burden to you again. Honestly, if Ms. Jensen doesn't want a divorce, I don't need anything official. As long as I can stay by your side, that's enough for me."Her words brought a faint smile to my lips. When I'd first gotten involved with Tina, it had only been a moment of weakness. She was young and energetic, and I'd only thought of her as a bit of fun, nothing more. However, gradually, things had gotten out of c

Chapter 6

I found myself thinking back to when Elise and I first got together.Once we'd finally made something of ourselves, the first thing we did was get married. We'd grown up together. Both our parents had died young, and we'd supported each other every step of the way to get to where we were. She remembered everything I liked. We had no plans to have a baby and stayed child-free for the first few years of our marriage. However, when I was around 28, I suddenly found myself wanting a kid."When we're old, Ford Group will need an heir. Otherwise, what have we been working this hard for? There'd be no one to inherit this fortune."That was how I'd put it to her at the time. Neither of us was against having children, so we decided to let it happen naturally.Yet neither of us expected anything to go wrong.Elise got seriously ill and had half her stomach removed. It was the result of damage from all the drinking she'd done in those early years, and if the damaged part hadn't been taken o

Chapter 7

When I got home, it was exactly as the housekeeper had said. Elise had moved out.The place looked no different from before. Her things were still there, and traces of the life we'd shared were everywhere.Yet the house felt so big.I paced back and forth across the spacious living room, unable to settle down.Something didn't sit right with me. I stared at my phone, lost in thought. My text thread with Elise still ended the day before our anniversary. She'd sent me message after message laying out everything she'd planned. But at the time, I'd been busy enjoying myself with Tina, so I'd replied with just two words."Anything's fine."She hadn't texted me again after that.I hesitated for a long time before finally calling her. However, she didn't answer. When the housekeeper saw me, she seemed to remember something and said, "Mr. Ford, before Mrs. Ford left, she asked me to tell you not to worry. She'll be there on time in a month to finalize the divorce. She also said that i

Chapter 8

Elise's POVIt was a month before I saw Joshua again.I'd heard about what happened with Tina. Apparently, Joshua had flown into a rage over it and made sure she was put away on more serious charges.None of it had anything to do with me anymore. At the beginning of the month-long cooling-off period, I had a hard time moving on.The doctors had told me not to drink, but I went looking for the bottom of a bottle anyway. I vomited blood more than once, ended up in the ER more than once, and came close to dying on the operating table. However, once it sank in that I was still alive, I finally let go of everything I'd been holding onto.20 years. Joshua had taken a third of my life. For whatever time I had left, I could finally live for myself. When I arrived at the courthouse, Joshua was already waiting outside."Let's go finalize the divorce," I said flatly. It had only been a month, but I found I had nothing left to say to him.At first, I hated and resented him.Why had he
