Chapter 66 Blood Remembers The passage beneath the ruined chapel descended farther than Kazan had expected. At first, he had believed the narrow staircase would lead them into an old burial chamber or forgotten crypt, somewhere beneath the cracked foundation of the chapel. Instead, the steps continued downward, twisting deeper beneath the mountain until the faint light from the entrance disappeared entirely. Only Ardan’s lantern remained. Its flame trembled inside the glass, throwing restless shadows across walls slick with centuries of moisture. The stone steps were narrow, wet, and uneven, their edges worn smooth by countless feet.
