The first sign is small. So small I almost miss it.It happens in the courtyard, late afternoon, while I’m helping Asher practice controlled shifting drills with Kieran watching nearby. We’ve made it a routine since the Eclipse. No more spontaneous transformations. No more uncontrolled bursts of energy.“Focus on your breathing,” I tell Asher, crouching to his level. “In through your nose. Slow. Hold. Out through your mouth.”He copies me with exaggerated seriousness.“I’m breathing like a warrior,” he announces.Kieran smirks. “You look like you’re about to pass out.”“I am not!”He concentrates harder. The shift begins—subtle, controlled. His eyes flicker silver-green.Claws press faintly against the surface of his fingers.Good.Normal.Then—The air changes. It’s not dramatic. Not violent.Just… heavier. The sunlight in the courtyard sharpens. The flowers lining the walkway tilt toward him as if pulled by gravity. The hairs on my arms lift.I feel it in my bloodstream before I und

The next morning feels too quiet. That’s what unsettles me most.No alarms. No shaking ground. No violet threads weaving into my child’s sleep.Just ordinary daylight filtering through compound glass. But I don’t trust ordinary anymore.I haven’t since the eclipse.Asher wakes up calmer than I expect.Too calm.He sits at the edge of the bed, legs swinging, staring at his hands.“You okay?” I ask carefully. He nods. Then shakes his head. Then nods again.“Do you remember your dream?” I sit beside him.“A little.” His voice is thoughtful. “It felt… nice.”My stomach tightens.“Nice how?”“She showed me trees made of light. And wolves that didn’t have to hide their eyes.” He looks up at me. “She said I wouldn’t have to hide either.”I keep my breathing steady.“She’s wrong.”“But why?” he asks softly. The innocence in his eyes makes this harder than facing Ashcroft.“You don’t have to hide,” I say gently. “But you also don’t have to be loud. Power isn’t about being bigger than everyone

The compound doesn’t feel safe anymore. Not after Kieran’s possession. Not after the ward cut.Not after the way Lilith slipped inside like she already knew the architecture of our defenses.Security doubles. Then triples. But paranoia grows faster than patrol rotations.Morgan doesn’t sleep.Kade refuses to leave Kieran’s side. And I sit in the training chamber at 2:13 in the morning, holding silver current tight between my palms and trying to feel the shape of what’s coming next.Because something is coming.Lilith isn’t finished. She escalated from ritual to possession in less than forty-eight hours. The next move won’t be subtle. It’ll be decisive.Kieran wakes just before dawn.I’m there when he opens his eyes.He looks normal. But the moment his gaze lands on me, I see something beneath the surface. Not corruption.Awareness.“You anchored me,” he says quietly.“Yes.”“That wasn’t suppression.”“No.”“It felt like being… tuned.”That word hits me.Tuned.“That’s what she’s doing

Lilith stops testing. That’s how we know something is wrong. For two full days, there’s no dream intrusion. No resonance spikes. No violet interference in the breach node. The false instability data we’ve been feeding her sits untouched.Morgan watches the readouts constantly.“She hasn’t pulled from the breach in forty-eight hours.”“That’s not retreat,” Thorne mutters. “That’s preparation.”I feel it too.A stillness. The kind that comes before something breaks. The first crack happens at noon. The ward network surges unexpectedly — not at the breach node, but at a different perimeter point.Morgan swears.“That’s not ours.”“What is it?”“External injection.”On-screen, a Covenant signature flares at one of the secondary ritual nodes we thought dormant.“They’re activating a backup circle,” Kade says.“No,” I reply quietly.“They’re syncing them.”Morgan’s hands move fast across the control board.Three red pulses light up across the region map.The northern node. The eastern node.

We do not march to the western ridge with claws out and teeth bared. We send a message. And I insist on writing it myself. The war room feels different tonight. Not reactive. Not frantic.Deliberate.Morgan stands at the map, marking Ashcroft’s last known position. Kade leans over the table, shoulders tight but listening. Kieran stands opposite him, arms crossed, unreadable as always. Thorne is seated, pen poised, ready to draft whatever legal gymnastics we require.“I’ll go,” Kade says for the third time.“No,” I answer for the third time.“You can’t put yourself within range of them. Not pregnant. Not when you’re the convergence axis.”“I won’t go physically,” I clarify. “But the message comes from me.”“That makes you the negotiator.”“Yes.”“And if they interpret negotiation as weakness?”“They won’t.”Kade studies me.“How are you so sure?”“Because Lilith didn’t come to burn the compound. She came to measure. She’s not reckless.”“And Ashcroft?”“Ashcroft is angry. Lilith is pat
