I stayed in the kitchen and kept wiping a plate that was already dry. I didn’t walk out to greet him. I didn’t ask if he had eaten. I didn’t even look toward the hallway. His black shirt clung to his back, slightly damp with sweat. Every time he pulled the bar down, the muscles in his shoulders shifted under the fabric. He didn’t look around. He didn’t need to.
