Chapter 1

The moment I accepted the offer, I felt strangely relieved. No one in the moon courtyard noticed.Mother was too busy directing two servants as they carried Rosalie’s barrel of moonwine from our family cellar. Its black oak had been polished until it gleamed, and fresh gold wax sealed the lid.“Bring the crystal cups,” she called. “It’s time to celebrate!”Callum took several pictures. His own barrel stood beside Rosalie’s, bearing the crest reserved for our family’s Alpha heir.A moment later, his post appeared on social media. My sister is going to the Royal Wolf Academy!I saved my moonwine for a worthy occasion, and tonight, I’m opening it for her.Father sat beneath the marble colonnade, watching with a rare smile. As Alpha, he rarely attended private family celebrations. Apparently, Rosalie’s Academy acceptance was important enough to make an exception.Julian stood beside Rosalie.“Want a picture before they break the seal?” he asked.Rosalie nodded, smiling sweetly. “Get my rig

The next morning, the family gathered in the dining room to complete Rosalie’s Academy enrollment.Mother had already opened the Royal Wolf Academy’s housing portal on her tablet.“The private residences in the eastern district are closest to the arts building,” she said. “Rosalie has always loved painting. She’ll be much happier there than in the dormitories.”Callum leaned over her shoulder.“This one has private security and an underground garage.”Father glanced at the listing.“Then it’s hers. Buy it.”Mother smiled and selected the three-bedroom penthouse without looking at the price. They spent the rest of the morning choosing Rosalie’s courses, furnishings, and even the view from her bedroom.I sat at the other end of the table with my Council Scholars enrollment packet unopened in front of me.No one asked about my plans. At lunch, Father slid a leather folder across the table to Rosalie.“The penthouse is in your name.”Rosalie stared at the deed. “You bought it for me?”“You

The next morning, the sound of helicopter blades woke me.I stepped onto the balcony and found my family gathered on the landing lawn, dressed for a day in the capital.Rosalie spotted me and waved.“Aria! Why aren’t you ready? We’re shopping for the Academy today.”I frowned. “When was that decided?”“Callum told everyone in the group chat last night.” She lifted her phone. “Didn’t you see it?”I checked mine. There were no new messages.“What group chat?”Rosalie’s smile faltered.“The one Callum made a few days ago—”Julian cleared his throat, cutting her off.“It’s mostly jokes and random videos,” he said. “We didn’t think you’d be interested.”His fingers moved across his screen. A second later, my phone vibrated with an invitation.Rosalie’s Royal CourtFive members: Father, Mother, Callum, Julian, and Rosalie.Five people.A complete family without me.“Go get dressed,” Mother called. “We’ll wait.”I returned to my room and had barely pulled a dress from the wardrobe when the ro

At that same moment, Father received a call from the Pack Council’s Security Division.“Alpha Ashwood, we’ve reopened the investigation into the rogue attack seven years ago.”The investigator continued.“We found evidence that Rosalie’s father was not the warrior who saved you that night.”“How can you be certain?” Father asked. His voice was steady, but his grip on the phone had turned his knuckles white.“We restored the damaged security records from the eastern watchtower,” the investigator said. “The footage shows another warrior pulling you to safety. Garrick Vale wasn’t anywhere near you when it happened.”“What about his wound?” “He was attacked on the western border several minutes later. His injury had nothing to do with saving you.”“Then why did the original report name him as my rescuer?”“That report was altered.”Father’s wolf stirred beneath his skin.“By whom?”“We’re still investigating. But that isn’t all we found.”The investigator paused before continuing.“The at

The Ashwoods returned to the estate before sunrise.Father went straight to the apartment above the stables. The door was unlocked.Inside, the bed had been made, the wardrobe emptied, and every drawer left open. Not a single piece of clothing remained.Even the framed photograph of Grandmother was gone.“She planned this,” Father said.Callum stood behind him.“She’ll come back in a few days. Aria has always been stubborn.”But a week passed, and I didn’t return.By the fifth day, Father had deployed every tracker in the Ashwood Pack. They searched the territory, questioned the guards, and reviewed every record from the territory’s gates and private airfield. Finally, the head warrior returned with an answer.“A Council vehicle collected Aria outside the eastern gate. Her travel clearance was valid, but the destination is sealed.”Father immediately contacted the Pack Council.“My daughter left Ashwood territory under your authority,” he said. “I want to know where she was taken.”“Ar

That night, Mother entered my old apartment above the stables.Behind the empty wardrobe, she found a worn sketchbook.Page after page was filled with drawings—wolves running beneath the moon, the family cellar, Grandmother smiling beside my barrel of moonwine.Mother had forgotten that I once loved to draw.Whenever I had tried to show her my pictures, she had been busy arranging Rosalie’s art lessons. In the main house, Callum searched through years of family photographs.Rosalie was in nearly every one. He found only one recent picture of me.I stood beside Grandmother in the family cellar, one hand resting on my moonwine barrel. He remembered taking it only because Grandmother had asked him twice. Then he remembered what he had said about Grandmothe’s cuff. That old thing has been sitting in a box for years. Why are you acting as if Rosalie tried to steal it?Now I had stopped arguing.I had stopped asking them for anything.I had simply left.So why didn’t he feel relieved?By my

Three months later, Rosalie returned to the Ashwood estate for winter break.A driver carried her designer luggage inside, but no one came to greet her.Mother sat on the sofa in the great room, staring into the cold fireplace. She didn’t rise, ask about the flight, or call for servants to take Rosalie’s coat.“Mom, I’m home.”Mother looked up.Something in her eyes had changed. She used to look at Rosalie as if she were something precious that had to be protected at any cost. That warmth was gone.Rosalie sat beside her.“What’s wrong?” she asked softly. “Is it because Aria still hasn’t come home?”At Aria’s name, Mother’s eyes filled with tears.Callum stood near the windows, his expression cold.“The Council finished investigating your father.”Rosalie turned toward him.“What about him?”“He gave the rogues our patrol route.”Her face went blank.Callum continued.“Your father planned the attack because he wanted to become Beta. He intended to let the rogues cross the border, then

By the time Rosalie returned from the shower, Callum had read four years of messages.Everything before that had been deleted. The conversation began with a message from Rosalie’s biological mother. The Ashwoods owe us. Your father lost his wolf because of them. Everything they give you is only what you deserve.Rosalie had replied:I know, Mom.A later message read:Luna Ashwood gave me Aria’s suite in the family wing. Aria had to move into the guest wing. Her mother’s response came immediately.Good. The more space you take in that family, the less Aria has. That is how they repay what they owe your father.Three years ago, Rosalie had written:I told Callum that Aria resented me for taking the adjoining room as my art studio. He called her jealous and moved her out of the main house. And her mother was happy with the result.Exactly. The more they defend you, the less place she has in that family. Keep being their sweet, grateful daughter. Two years ago:I cried in front of Aria tod

The Council notified me when Garrick Vale received his final judgment. He was convicted of treason, stripped of his warrior rank, and removed from the pack’s roll of honor. Although he remained trapped in an endless sleep, everything he owned was seized to compensate the families of the wolves who had died in the attack.I read the notice once and closed it.Two weeks later, Grant stopped me outside the laboratory.“Aria, there are people waiting at the main security gate.”My hand tightened around the reports I was carrying.“Who?”“Your family. They filed an emergency petition with the Council and have been outside the gate since sunrise.” He studied my face. “You don’t have to see them.”I was silent for a moment. Then I handed him the reports.“I’ll go.”Four people stood beyond the outer gate.Mother’s hair was streaked with gray. Father seemed to have aged years, and Callum had grown thin. Julian stood behind them, clutching a bouquet of blue moon lilies wilted from the journey.
