Chapter 5

Author: TJ
At that same moment, Father received a call from the Pack Council’s Security Division.

“Alpha Ashwood, we’ve reopened the investigation into the rogue attack seven years ago.”

The investigator continued.

“We found evidence that Rosalie’s father was not the warrior who saved you that night.”

“How can you be certain?” Father asked.

His voice was steady, but his grip on the phone had turned his knuckles white.

“We restored the damaged security records from the eastern watchtower,” the investigator said. “The footage shows another warrior pulling you to safety. Garrick Vale wasn’t anywhere near you when it happened.”

“What about his wound?”

“He was attacked on the western border several minutes later. His injury had nothing to do with saving you.”

“Then why did the original report name him as my rescuer?”

“That report was altered.”

Father’s wolf stirred beneath his skin.

“By whom?”

“We’re still investigating. But that isn’t all we found.”

The investigator paused before continuing.

“The attack wasn’t caused by a failure in your border defenses. Someone inside the pack gave the rogues your patrol route.”

Father went still.

“There was a traitor in my pack?”

“Yes, Alpha. The rogues could only have entered that night with help from one of your own wolves.”

Father gripped the edge of the desk to keep himself upright.

For seven years, he had believed Garrick Vale sacrificed his wolf to save his life. He had blamed himself, convinced that his failure at the border had forced Garrick to pay the price.

Now the Council was telling him that the debt he had spent seven years repaying had never existed.

“Dad?”

Callum stepped out of Rosalie’s new art studio and stopped when he saw Father’s face.

“Who was that?”

“The Pack Council.”

Father lowered the phone.

“They recovered the missing records from the rogue attack.” Father looked directly at Callum. “Rosalie’s father wasn’t the warrior who saved me that night. Someone else was.”

Callum went still.

“What?”

“And the attack wasn’t caused by a failure in my defenses. Someone inside the pack gave the rogues our patrol route.”

Mother emerged from the dressing room with several fabric samples in her hands.

“Why are you both standing here? The designer needs us to choose the drapes for Rosalie’s bedroom.”

Callum turned to her.

“Rosalie’s father didn’t save Father. Another warrior did.”

The fabric samples slipped from Mother’s fingers.

“What do you mean?”

“Garrick was nowhere near me when the other warrior pulled me to safety,” Father said. “They also found evidence that someone inside the pack gave the rogues our patrol route.”

Mother stared at him.

“But the original report said Garrick took the blade meant for you.”

“The report was altered.”

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then Father looked around the penthouse.

“Where is Aria? Wasn’t she supposed to have arrived by now?”

Mother frowned. “The airline notified me that she never boarded. I sent her several messages, but she hasn’t answered.”

Father pulled out his phone and called me. The call went straight to voicemail.

Callum checked the family group.

“She left the chat.”

Mother’s face drained of color.

Father turned toward the elevator.

“We’re going home. Now.”

Rosalie appeared in the hallway, holding a portfolio case Julian had bought for her.

“What happened? The decorator is waiting for us to approve the studio.”

“Do it yourself,” Callum said. “Aria is missing.”

Rosalie froze. Then she lowered her eyes.

“Maybe she isn’t missing.”

Everyone looked at her.

Rosalie twisted her fingers around the handle of the case.

“I don’t want to say anything bad about Aria, but she gets upset when she thinks everyone is paying too much attention to me.”

Callum’s jaw tightened.

“She has shut herself away before,” Rosalie continued softly. “Maybe leaving the family chat is her way of making everyone worry.”

Mother looked uncertain.

“But she never boarded her flight.”

“She probably wants us to chase after her,” Rosalie said. “If we do, she’ll know this works.”

Callum was silent for a moment.

Then he nodded.

“Rosalie may be right. Aria has always needed time to calm down. If we make a scene, we’ll only encourage her.”

Mother looked at Father.

“But what if something happened to her?”

“She’s the Alpha’s daughter,” Callum said. “She can take care of herself. Isn’t that what she’s always telling us?”

Rosalie touched Mother’s arm.

“Give her a few days. Once she realizes no one is angry, she’ll come back on her own.”

Father remained beside the elevator, saying nothing.

The investigator’s words kept repeating in his mind.

Rosalie’s father was not the warrior who saved you.

For seven years, he had used his guilt to justify everything they gave Rosalie, and everything they took from me.

He had allowed his own daughter to be pushed out of the family wing and into a room above the stables.

He had ordered me to surrender Grandmother’s cuff.

He had expected me to abandon the most prestigious program in the northern territories and devote my future to Rosalie.

Father realized he had spent seven years paying off a debt that had never existed, only to end up owing his own daughter one he might never be able to repay.

The Council notified me when Garrick Vale received his final judgment. He was convicted of treason, stripped of his warrior rank, and removed from the pack’s roll of honor. Although he remained trapped in an endless sleep, everything he owned was seized to compensate the families of the wolves who had died in the attack.I read the notice once and closed it.Two weeks later, Grant stopped me outside the laboratory.“Aria, there are people waiting at the main security gate.”My hand tightened around the reports I was carrying.“Who?”“Your family. They filed an emergency petition with the Council and have been outside the gate since sunrise.” He studied my face. “You don’t have to see them.”I was silent for a moment. Then I handed him the reports.“I’ll go.”Four people stood beyond the outer gate.Mother’s hair was streaked with gray. Father seemed to have aged years, and Callum had grown thin. Julian stood behind them, clutching a bouquet of blue moon lilies wilted from the journey.

By the time Rosalie returned from the shower, Callum had read four years of messages.Everything before that had been deleted. The conversation began with a message from Rosalie’s biological mother. The Ashwoods owe us. Your father lost his wolf because of them. Everything they give you is only what you deserve.Rosalie had replied:I know, Mom.A later message read:Luna Ashwood gave me Aria’s suite in the family wing. Aria had to move into the guest wing. Her mother’s response came immediately.Good. The more space you take in that family, the less Aria has. That is how they repay what they owe your father.Three years ago, Rosalie had written:I told Callum that Aria resented me for taking the adjoining room as my art studio. He called her jealous and moved her out of the main house. And her mother was happy with the result.Exactly. The more they defend you, the less place she has in that family. Keep being their sweet, grateful daughter. Two years ago:I cried in front of Aria tod

Three months later, Rosalie returned to the Ashwood estate for winter break.A driver carried her designer luggage inside, but no one came to greet her.Mother sat on the sofa in the great room, staring into the cold fireplace. She didn’t rise, ask about the flight, or call for servants to take Rosalie’s coat.“Mom, I’m home.”Mother looked up.Something in her eyes had changed. She used to look at Rosalie as if she were something precious that had to be protected at any cost. That warmth was gone.Rosalie sat beside her.“What’s wrong?” she asked softly. “Is it because Aria still hasn’t come home?”At Aria’s name, Mother’s eyes filled with tears.Callum stood near the windows, his expression cold.“The Council finished investigating your father.”Rosalie turned toward him.“What about him?”“He gave the rogues our patrol route.”Her face went blank.Callum continued.“Your father planned the attack because he wanted to become Beta. He intended to let the rogues cross the border, then

That night, Mother entered my old apartment above the stables.Behind the empty wardrobe, she found a worn sketchbook.Page after page was filled with drawings—wolves running beneath the moon, the family cellar, Grandmother smiling beside my barrel of moonwine.Mother had forgotten that I once loved to draw.Whenever I had tried to show her my pictures, she had been busy arranging Rosalie’s art lessons. In the main house, Callum searched through years of family photographs.Rosalie was in nearly every one. He found only one recent picture of me.I stood beside Grandmother in the family cellar, one hand resting on my moonwine barrel. He remembered taking it only because Grandmother had asked him twice. Then he remembered what he had said about Grandmothe’s cuff. That old thing has been sitting in a box for years. Why are you acting as if Rosalie tried to steal it?Now I had stopped arguing.I had stopped asking them for anything.I had simply left.So why didn’t he feel relieved?By my

The Ashwoods returned to the estate before sunrise.Father went straight to the apartment above the stables. The door was unlocked.Inside, the bed had been made, the wardrobe emptied, and every drawer left open. Not a single piece of clothing remained.Even the framed photograph of Grandmother was gone.“She planned this,” Father said.Callum stood behind him.“She’ll come back in a few days. Aria has always been stubborn.”But a week passed, and I didn’t return.By the fifth day, Father had deployed every tracker in the Ashwood Pack. They searched the territory, questioned the guards, and reviewed every record from the territory’s gates and private airfield. Finally, the head warrior returned with an answer.“A Council vehicle collected Aria outside the eastern gate. Her travel clearance was valid, but the destination is sealed.”Father immediately contacted the Pack Council.“My daughter left Ashwood territory under your authority,” he said. “I want to know where she was taken.”“Ar
