Chapter 1 : The Heir

The first person to knock me flat before my eighteenth birthday was my father.I lay there for a second, staring at the sky, before I let out a groan. "Seriously?"He lowered his practice sword and held out his hand. "You dropped your guard.""I was distracted.""You were showing off."I grabbed his hand and let him pull me up, brushing the dirt off my sleeve. "I wasn't."His eyebrow went up. I sighed. "Fine. Maybe a little."A smile tugged at his mouth. That was my father. He always saw through me. I picked my sword back up, and that's when I noticed how quiet the training yard had gone.I looked toward the balcony. A few guards were pretending not to watch us. Luca wasn't even bothering to pretend. He stood against one of the stone pillars, arms crossed, grinning like he was enjoying every second of it."You're enjoying this," I called up to him."Immensely."I pointed my sword at him. "Come down here.""No.""Coward.""Princess.""Luca.""Evelyn."My father cleared his throat. "Are

Chapter 2 : His Mate

The celebration was still going when I realized Luca was missing.I'd seen him only a few minutes ago. Now he was nowhere. I scanned the great hall again and came up empty."Have you seen Luca?" I asked Aria. She shook her head. "Not since the announcement."That didn't sit right with me. Luca loved parties. He loved food, music, embarrassing me in front of important people. He wouldn't just vanish. "I'll find him."I slipped away from the crowd. The balcony was empty. So was the training corridor. I finally headed for the gardens, and the second I stepped through the doors, I heard voices.I slowed down. Angelina. And Luca.I was about to call out when his voice stopped me cold."I thought I was going to be King."Something in the way he said it made me freeze where I stood. I moved closer instead of calling out. They were standing beneath the old oak tree. Angelina had her arms wrapped around him, his face pressed into her shoulder, his shoulders shaking. He was crying. My chest tig

Chapter 3 : The One I Left Behind

I couldn't move. Neither could he.Garret stood across the hall, his eyes fixed on mine. My heart was still pounding from the moment our scents had collided, and my Lycan wouldn't settle — if anything, it grew more restless the longer I stood there.*Go to him.*I swallowed. Maybe I should. Maybe that was just what happened now — you found your mate, and you walked to him. So I took one step.Garret's expression shifted. Hope, quick and unguarded, gone almost as soon as I saw it. He took a step toward me too. Then another. The crowd seemed to part between us without anyone asking them to. I couldn't hear the whispers anymore. I could only see him.His scent grew stronger with every step. My chest felt strangely warm. He was almost there. Then I saw my father. He stood near the council doors, looking straight at me, and Luca's promise came rushing back. *I'll talk to Father.* I hesitated. Garret stopped where he was, his eyes searching my face. I looked from him to my father, who raise

Chapter 4 : My Mate

I should have walked away. Instead, I stood there. So did he.The noise of the celebration seemed to fade around us. I could still see people moving, glasses raised, musicians playing somewhere behind me, but none of it felt important anymore. All I could notice was him. And that scent — still there, warm and musky, clean with something earthy underneath that made my Lycan restless every time I breathed it in. I'd never felt anything like it. Neither, apparently, had he. He looked almost as lost as I did.His eyes moved over my face, then flicked briefly toward the crown behind me. When they came back to mine, he looked nervous again, and that made me feel strangely better. At least I wasn't the only one with no idea what to do.He cleared his throat. "I suppose we should talk.""Probably."Another silence. Then he smiled, a little awkward. "This is harder than I imagined."I couldn't help laughing. "You imagined this?""Not exactly this.""What did you imagine?""I don't know." He gl

Chapter 5 : Blood isn't a Crown

The council chamber was already full when I entered, and that alone told me this wasn't going to be a simple introduction. My father sat at the head of the long table, senior councilors arranged on either side of him. Luca was there. So was Garret. He stood when I walked in, and our eyes met for a brief second — there was still something strange about seeing him here. Yesterday he'd been a stranger in a crowded ballroom. Today he was sitting in my father's council chamber because he was my mate. I gave him a small smile before taking my seat beside Luca.My father waited until I'd settled. "Garret Hale."Garret stood again. "My King.""You've been introduced to me privately. Today I want the council to formally acknowledge you as Evelyn's mate."Garret bowed his head. "It's an honor."One of the councilors studied him. "You're from the Eastern Pack?""Yes, Councilor.""And your rank?""Delta."A few murmurs ran around the table. My father went on. "Garret has served his pack primarily

Chapter 6 : What The Crown Does

LucaI hadn't even reached my rooms when someone called my name."Prince Luca."I turned. Councilor Hale stood alone at the end of the corridor — and that was the first thing that struck me, that he was alone. The second was that he wasn't glancing toward the guards the way people usually did before saying something they shouldn't."May I speak with you?""About the meeting?"His mouth tightened almost imperceptibly. "Not here."I understood well enough. "Come."I led him into the small study beside my chambers and shut the door behind us. He stayed standing, hands folded, waiting for me to ask."Well?"He held my gaze for a moment before he spoke. "I wanted you to know that not everyone on the council agrees with the King."I said nothing, and he took that as permission to continue."I believe you would make a capable ruler."The words should have pleased me. Instead they sat uneasily in my chest, heavier than a compliment had any right to be."My sister is the heir.""For now."I lo

Chapter 7 : The Crown You Chose

The summons came before dinner, and not through a servant.Evelyn. Luca. Come to my study. Now.My father's handwriting, four words, no explanation. I knew before I'd even folded the note back up that whatever waited behind that door wasn't going to be a conversation. It was going to be a reckoning.Luca was already outside the study when I got there, arms crossed, jaw set in a way I recognized from a hundred smaller fights that had never mattered as much as this one was about to."What did you do?" he said, before I'd even stopped walking."What did *I* do?""You stood in front of the entire council yesterday and lit a match.""You're welcome.""That wasn't a compliment, Evelyn."The doors swung open before I could answer him."Both of you. Inside."We went in together, shoulder to shoulder, the way we'd walked into every room since we were children — except this time neither of us reached for the other's hand.My father was standing behind his desk, and he didn't ask us to sit. That

Chapter 8 : Firsts

I hadn't planed on seeing Garret that evening. That was probably why I was so annoyed to realize I was looking for him.I'd spent the whole afternoon listening to servants, council members, and guards whisper about yesterday's argument as if I'd personally declared war on the kingdom. By the time the sun started dipping toward the western wall, I needed air more than I needed to be right about anything.Apparently my feet had other plans, because somehow they carried me straight to him.He was outside the training grounds, sitting on the stone steps with his sleeves rolled to the elbow and a book open across his knees, looking entirely too comfortable for someone surrounded by the clang of swords.I stopped a few feet away and crossed my arms. "You actually read next to a training ground?"He glanced up, unbothered. "I was here first.""That wasn't my question."He closed the book, marking his place with one finger. "I was waiting for you."That stopped me. "How did you know I'd come?

Chapter 9 : When Everything Changed

EvelynBy the time Garret and I made it back to the palace, the sun had already dropped behind the mountains, leaving the halls washed in that gray, in-between light that always made the place feel bigger than it was.I was still thinking about the kiss. That was becoming a problem, because every time I looked at him, my mind went straight back to it — the warmth of his hand at my waist, the way the bond had roared to life the second his mouth met mine. He seemed to be fighting the same battle, if the way he kept glancing at me sideways was any indication.Neither of us said much on the walk back. We didn't get the chance to.A guard was waiting near the entrance, posture too stiff to be casual. "Your Highness. His Majesty wants to see you and Garret."I looked at Garret. He gave me a questioning look, the kind that asked *are we in trouble* without saying it out loud."I don't think we're in trouble," I said."You said that yesterday.""And I was right.""You nearly started a war wit

Chapter 10 : The Seeds of Doubt

LucaSomething had changed in the palace. I felt it the moment I stepped into the eastern corridor that morning. People still bowed. Servants still greeted me. Guards still called me Prince Luca. But their eyes lingered a beat too long now, as if they were looking at something they hadn't noticed before — or something they were only just beginning to.I walked into the council chamber for my morning lessons and found three councilors already there, deep in conversation. They stopped the moment they saw me.I slowed in the doorway. "Am I interrupting?""Of course not," Councilor Varrick said, with a smile that was polite in a way that felt deliberate.I took my usual seat, and the meeting carried on, but something in the room had shifted. They weren't speaking to me the way they used to. They were measuring me.Afterward, Varrick caught up with me. "Prince Luca, could I have a word?"The others were already filing out. "About?""Something that shouldn't be discussed in front of everyon
