Marcus was already inside the archives and was standing over a table covered with documents and old records. He looked up when Damian and Serena entered. He took a good look at both of them, his eyes twinkled with amusement before he finally cleared his throat. "I was beginning to wonder when you'd arrive." Damian ignored his obvious jab and then his gaze moved over the papers. He could tell that Marcus had been searching for answers. "What did you find?" Marcus picked up one sheet and sighed. He knew how important it was to Damian and Serena that they figure out exactly what the secret was, and that was why he had spent a lot of time working on the investigation. "The recent update wasn't added to the original Black Hollow file." He placed the file on the table and continued, "It was added to a secondary registry." Serena frowned, and when Damian didn't say anything as she had expected, she asked, "What does that mean?" "It means someone didn't simply modify an old record." Ma

DAMIAN.Damian had spent most of his life learning how to remain calm when everyone else was losing their heads. It was part of being Alpha.Fear could spread through a pack faster than any disease. Panic could turn reasonable people into reckless ones. Anger could make even experienced wolves act before thinking. So he had learned to control his expression, his voice, his breathing.Everything.But standing inside the archives with Serena's hand in his, staring at the warning that connected her father to Adrian Vale, Damian found that control becoming considerably harder. If Serena remembers who her father is, Adrian Vale must be found before the eastern council finds her.He read the sentence again, then again. The words did not change, neither did the unease crawling beneath his skin.Adrian Vale, the man who had supposedly died years ago, a former Silvercrest council member.A Guardian, a man connected to Serena's mother. And apparently, a man who had known enough about Serena's e

DAMIAN."Alyssa."The name fell from Marcus's lips, and dead silence followed. For a moment, Damian genuinely believed he had misheard him.He stared at his Beta, waiting for him to correct himself, to explain that he had meant someone else, someone whose name would make sense in the middle of everything that was happening. But Marcus said nothing, and the silence stretched between them.Damian's fingers tightened around the piece of dark fabric in his hand. He glanced at Serena and noticed that she, too, was completely stunned by Marcus's announcement. He knew the turmoil she was going through had to be worse than his. He might have employed and trusted Alyssa as one of his household staff, but his relationship with her could never be compared to what Serena shared with her, even though it had only been for a short while."What did you just say?"He wasn't sure what he expected, but the truth was that a part of him hoped that when he asked the question again, Marcus would say that he

DAMIAN.They returned to the main residence as the afternoon light began to fade, each of them lost in their own thoughts.Damian had spent the past hour questioning guards, reviewing security records, and trying to determine how Alyssa had left without anyone noticing. But it seemed like every answer led to another question.Everyone had no idea how she had managed to disappear without anyone seeing her. Or maybe she hadn't escaped at all.He had no idea, but the answers they gave only made him more confused. One of the guards said the western gate had been opened briefly that morning, but no one remembered seeing Alyssa leave. The guards assigned to the eastern corridor reported hearing nothing unusual, and the old archive entrance had been accessed twice within the past twenty-four hours.Someone had either been helping Alyssa move through Silvercrest unnoticed or had deliberately made sure no one would question her presence.Neither possibility pleased him.Because if she had secr

DAMIAN.He felt Serena move beside him, and he knew it was too late to hide it away from her."What is it?" she asked as she tried to peek over his shoulder.Damian couldn't answer because beneath her name was another line. A line that made the entire room seem to tilt.PROTECTION STATUS: TERMINATED.Terminated, as in... ended??What on earth was going on? All this while, he thought that she was protected, that no matter what, nothing could happen to her as long as she was still protected by the Guardians, but now...?Now that her protection status was terminated, it could mean that her life was in danger. If he found it, then definitely the people in search of her would also have found out by now that she was no longer protected, and that would only mean that they would start coming for her.He looked up at Marcus. Marcus gave him a look that almost mirrored his. Suddenly, he knew why the Beta wasn't too eager to tell him about this new development. It was because he, too, knew what
