Ronan's POV I began the following morning where I'd resolved to begin the evening before — closer to home, examining my own household with the same careful scrutiny I'd have applied to any outside suspect. I started at my desk with a blank sheet of paper, listing every person with reasonable access to information about the candidates' visits, forcing myself to approach the exercise with the same discipline I'd apply to any formal Pack investigation rather than the comfortable, protective instincts that had governed most of my decisions regarding my own family since Elira's return. It wasn't a comfortable exercise. I found myself cataloging, with growing unease, exactly who among the family and senior staff had genuine access to information about the candidates' visits, motive to want the arrangement to fail, and the kind of quiet, unsupervised opportunity the anonymous letters would have required. The list, once I forced myself to actually assemble it honestly rather than deflectin

Ronan's POVI found Selene in her sitting room, a book open on her lap that she wasn't actually reading, judging by how quickly she set it aside the moment I entered without knocking. The room carried its usual warmth — fresh flowers, soft afternoon light, the particular comfortable domesticity that had always made this space feel like the safest room in the entire house to retreat to as children."Ronan?" Something in my expression must have carried enough warning that her easy smile faltered almost immediately. "Is something wrong?"I closed the door behind me and crossed the room, retrieving both fragments from my pocket and setting them on the small table between us without preamble. "I need you to explain these."She looked down at the burned scraps of paper, and I watched, carefully, for whatever her first unguarded reaction might reveal before she had time to compose a response. Something flickered across her face — not quite panic, but close enough to it that any remaining dou

Kael's POVBastian's request for a private audience hadn't entirely surprised me. I'd been half expecting some version of this conversation since word first reached me, through the estate's ordinary channels, that Selene's more careful and considerably more deniable sabotage had begun targeting the household's most promising remaining candidate. I'd watched the pattern repeat itself twice already — Darius, then Corwin — and something in the careful, deliberate construction of the whispers reaching Bastian told me this attempt had been built with more caution than the two before it, learning from whatever mistakes had made the earlier sabotage traceable.I'd chosen my words to him with deliberate, careful precision — confirming only what I'd personally witnessed of Elira's character across months of observation, offering nothing that might reveal the deeper investigation I still wasn't prepared to share with anyone beyond my own family and, eventually, Elira herself. I told him what wa

Theron's POVBastian's continued presence at the estate settled into a rhythm I found considerably harder to ignore than Darius's brief, businesslike visit had been. Where Darius had come and gone within a matter of days, Bastian had extended his stay twice already, each extension accompanied by the kind of quiet, unhurried confidence that suggested a man genuinely willing to invest the time necessary to build something lasting rather than simply completing a practical transaction.Where Darius had approached the entire arrangement with cool, unsentimental efficiency, Bastian brought something warmer, more patient — genuine interest in Elira's daily life, careful attention to her preferences, a steady, unhurried courtship that looked, from where I stood watching, considerably more promising than either of the two failed attempts preceding it.I told myself, in the days following my own unsettling half-admission in the garden weeks earlier, that I'd re

Kael's POVThe weeks following my mother's request for Elira's physical description passed with a strange, suspended quality, my own household affairs continuing their ordinary rhythm while a considerably larger question sat quietly unresolved somewhere beneath every routine task I attended to. Council meetings, border reports, the slow accumulation of ordinary governance — all of it continued exactly as it always had, and yet none of it fully held my attention the way it once did, my thoughts drifting, more often than I wanted to admit, toward a household four days' travel away and a letter I still hadn't received any response to.I'd sent the description as requested — careful, precise, nothing embellished beyond simple factual observation. I hadn't heard anything further since, and the silence itself had become its own kind of waiting, each day passing without confirmation or denial leaving me increasingly uncertain which outcome I actually hoped for more.
