None of us slept properly that night. I sat with Thorne's letter spread across Marla's familiar table until the candles burned low, rereading every line searching for details the sovereign had deliberately, frustratingly withheld."He mentions containment," Ivy said, having been summoned immediately once word of the letter's contents spread through our trusted circle. She'd traveled from Wren's Haven within two days of receiving Bertram's urgent message. "But containment of what, specifically, he never states directly. That omission itself tells us something.""That he wants me dependent on him for the answer," I said, understanding the manipulation even as genuine fear coiled tighter in my chest. "He's offering just enough information to alarm me, while withholding exactly what I'd need to verify his claims independently.""Which doesn't necessarily mean he's lying," Bertram cautioned. "Manipulative framing and genuine threat aren't mutually exclusive. He may believe every word he's

The journey toward the Veiled Hollow took three days of careful travel deeper into the eastern mountains, terrain considerably more treacherous than anything our previous expeditions throughout this remarkable year had required navigating. Thorne accompanied us personally, along with a small contingent of his own trusted warriors, though I noticed Damien remained close beside me throughout the entire journey, his watchful caution never fully relaxing despite the outwardly cooperative nature of our current alliance."You don't trust him," Damien observed quietly, during one of our brief evening rest stops, as Thorne conferred privately with his own warriors near the edge of our camp."I don't fully trust anyone whose interests align so conveniently with whatever outcome benefits them most," I admitted. "But I believe the threat itself may be genuine, regardless of how thoroughly he's leveraging it toward his own political advantage.""Those two things can both be true," Damien agreed.

The journey back toward Ashgrove took considerably less time than our initial travel toward Thornwood territory, familiarity with the mountain passes and Thorne's own scouts guiding us along a more direct route than our original, more cautious approach had required. Still, by the time Ashgrove's familiar borders finally came into view, nearly a full month had passed since our delegation first departed to investigate his unsettling warning.Ronan met us at the gates, his expression shifting from careful composure to obvious relief the moment he confirmed our safe return. "You're back sooner than I expected," he said, embracing me briefly before turning his attention toward the rest of our travel worn delegation. "I take it whatever you found justified the journey.""More than justified it," Marla said grimly. "Though the news isn't entirely comforting."We gathered that evening in the council hall, representatives from across our confederation summoned to hear the full account of every

Three more weeks passed in careful, methodical research, correspondence flowing steadily between Ashgrove, Hollowbrook, and Thornwood as Ivy and her counterparts worked to develop clearer understanding of exactly what the Blood Remembering ritual required. I threw myself into confederation governance during this waiting period, finding a strange comfort in the mundane, practical work of trade agreements and territorial disputes, tasks that felt refreshingly straightforward compared to the ancient, uncertain danger looming over everything else.Thorne himself arrived at Ashgrove midway through this research period, accompanied by two of his most trusted scholars, a gesture that struck me as genuinely significant given how thoroughly his own territory had maintained isolation from broader political involvement throughout its history."I wanted to be present for this discussion personally," he explained, once formal greetings had concluded, "rather than continuing to rely entirely on cor

Recovery from the Blood Remembering's sacrifice took considerably longer than any of us anticipated, weeks passing before the exhaustion finally lifted enough that daily life at Ashgrove could resume its normal rhythm. Marla, in particular, required careful attention during this recovery period, her advanced age making the toll of sacrificed years considerably more physically taxing than what the younger volunteers experienced."I'm perfectly fine," she insisted, on more than one occasion, whenever I fussed over her continued fatigue with obvious concern."You sacrificed years you could genuinely least afford to lose," I countered, unable to fully suppress my worry despite her repeated reassurance."I sacrificed years I chose to offer, freely and completely," Marla corrected gently. "There's considerable difference between loss and genuine gift, child. Don't diminish my choice by treating it as regrettable burden rather than the deliberate act of love it actually represented."Her wis
