The separation had been silent, mutual, and utterly devastating. When the distant, panicked howls of the Silvertooth scouting parties had finally echoed through the trees, Carmilla had withdrawn her hand as if burned. Without a single word, she had used her supernatural speed to vanish into the southern shadows, leaving Astrid alone in the snow to be found by her frantic pack. Now, three days later, Astrid stood in the center of the pack’s training grounds, her bare skin exposed to the biting mountain wind. She had spent the last four hours systematically destroying wooden training dummies with her bare hands, her obsidian claws carving deep, splintered gouges into the heavy oak."You're going to break your knuckles if you keep hitting the iron bands, Alpha," Torin said, stepping into the ring. He held a thick towel and a skin of water, his expression deeply troubled.Astrid didn't stop. She swung a devastating left hook, the impact shattering the top half of the dummy into a shower

The transition from the edge of the grand staircase to the center of the polished marble floor felt like stepping onto an execution square. Astrid’s large, sun-browned hand slid firmly around Carmilla’s waist, her palm resting against the smooth, exposed skin of the vampire’s back. A violent jolt of electricity shot straight up Astrid's arm, so intense her inner wolf bared its teeth in pure shock. Carmilla’s skin wasn't just cool; it felt like polished winter ice, yet the physical contact didn't freeze Astrid. It ignited a roaring wildfire right beneath her ribs. Carmilla’s left hand came up to rest lightly on Astrid’s broad shoulder, her fingers curling slightly into the heavy silk of the charcoal-grey tuxedo. Her other hand remained locked in Astrid's burning grip. For a vampire who had spent centuries in absolute stillness, the sheer force of Astrid's life force—the frantic, booming thud of her pulse, the radiating heat that seemed to melt the mask right off Carmilla’s face—was

The split-second before a bomb detonates is the quietest moment in the universe. The iron gate behind Carmilla was groaning, the internal mechanics screaming under the pressure of the rogues' high-tech explosive device on the other side. Sparks were already beginning to shoot through the seams of the metal doors, casting jagged, frantic shadows across the narrow stone corridor. The air smelled violently of burning wire, sulfur, and incoming slaughter. But Astrid Moonvael wasn't looking at the door. Her world had completely narrowed to the woman pinned between her hands and the iron bars. The heavy, treasonous confession hung in the freezing space between them like a physical entity: I’d rather do it defending you than killing you. Carmilla’s crimson eyes were wide, reflecting the sudden flash of sparks behind her, but her hand remained wrapped around Astrid’s burning wrist, her fingers trembling slightly. For eight hundred years, Carmilla’s system had been a masterpiece of flawle

The smoke from the blasted gate hadn’t even fully cleared before the first rogue lunged. It was a renegade wolf from the Shattered Alliance, already half-shifted into a grotesque, asymmetrical bipedal beast. His eyes burned with an unstable, drug-fueled red, foam dripping from a jaw filled with mismatched, jagged teeth. He carried the rancid, biting scent of a packless outcast—a smell that made Astrid’s inner wolf recoil in pure disgust before rising up to unleash its own blinding fury. "Flesh!" the rogue bellowed, his voice a distorted, wet gurgle as his elongated claws aimed directly for Astrid’s throat. Astrid didn't back down an inch. She didn't have room to step back; Carmilla was still on the stone floor right behind her, her system still audibly gasping and recovering from the absolute sensory devastation of their stolen kiss. If Astrid moved away, the vampire commander would be torn to shreds before she could even find the hilt of her broken rapier. Astrid became a demon.

The blizzard outside had transformed into a muffled, distant roar, burying the stone cottage under a heavy blanket of white isolation. Inside, the only light came from the dim, pale starlight filtering through a cracked wooden shutter and the faint, natural bioluminescence of Carmilla’s own crimson eyes. Carmilla hadn't moved from the edge of the cot. Her silk dress was torn at the hem, stained with ash, dark rogue blood, and the bright, smoking crimson of Astrid’s Lycan essence. For hours, she had sat in the quiet dark, her cold palms resting against the Alpha’s burning skin, acting as a human compress to absorb the fever. It was a tedious, agonizingly intimate process. Every time Carmilla’s hands grew warm from the contact, she had to pull away, let the freezing mountain air reset her body temperature to absolute frost, and press her palms back against Astrid’s neck, throat, and chest. Slowly, the chaotic, purplish lines of silver poison began to recede from Astrid’s shoulder, le
