The council convened three days later to decide Selene's fate.It was held in the great hall, formally, with the senior advisors, the border commanders, Elder Moss, Captain Dara, and Rowan seated at the long table. As heir I sat among them now without question, my place at that table settled in a way it had not been even a month before.Selene was brought in under guard and stood before the assembled council with her hands bound and her posture carefully composed, though I could see the effort it cost her.Advisor Crane, whose office had unknowingly been the channel through which false information had once passed, read the formal account of her actions. The years of manipulation against Kael. The deliberate cruelty toward me, born from simple ambition rather than any larger design. The connection to Aldric's network, established initially for personal gain and continued even after she understood, at least in broad strokes, what the northern kingdom intended for the missing heir. The a

Six months passed with the particular quality of time that moves both quickly and slowly at once, depending on which day you asked me to measure it.The kingdom rebuilt steadily. The wounded from the battle healed, mostly, though two of Sable's grave cases left lasting injuries that would shape how those warriors served going forward, a reality the kingdom absorbed with the same practical care it brought to everything. The eastern gate was reinforced further, lessons from the battle folded carefully into its defenses. The southern approach, which had nearly broken, received new attention and new fortification under Dara's careful direction.I trained still, every day, though the desperate urgency of the pre-battle weeks had settled into something steadier and more sustainable. Gareth adjusted the schedule to reflect a kingdom no longer racing against an immediate deadline, though he made clear, in his characteristically understated way, that readiness was never something you achieved

The kingdom threw itself into wedding preparations with an enthusiasm that surprised me.I had expected, given the recent battle and the ongoing tension with the north, that a wedding might feel like an indulgence the kingdom could not fully afford. Instead I learned quickly that the people needed exactly this. After years of holding on through difficulty, after a battle that had asked everything of them, a wedding felt less like extravagance and more like proof that the future they had fought for was actually arriving.Cora took charge of much of the planning, which surprised no one, and I found myself grateful for her steady guidance through decisions that felt, at times, overwhelming in their sheer number. What colours would mark the ceremony. Which traditions from the old dynasty should be honoured and which had faded enough that reviving them felt more performative than meaningful. How large the celebration should be, given both the kingdom's continued vigilance toward the north

The morning of the wedding arrived clear and bright, the kind of autumn day that felt deliberately generous, as though the season itself had decided to cooperate with everything the kingdom had been building toward.Sable came to help me dress, along with two of the kitchen staff who had become friends over the months, and the small room filled with the particular warmth of women preparing another woman for something significant. My gown had been made by the kingdom's finest seamstress, dark and rich in colour rather than the traditional white I had worn to my rejection ceremony, embroidered along the collar and sleeves with the same bloodline pattern that marked my mother's ceremonial garment, still folded carefully in her old chest.I had asked for that specifically. Not white, not the innocent hopeful colour of a girl who did not yet understand what waited for her. Something deeper. Something that honoured the woman I had become through everything that followed that terrible night.

The morning after the coronation, I held my first council session as queen rather than as heir. The distinction mattered more than I expected it to. I had sat at that same table for months now, contributing opinions, offering strategy, building trust with the commanders and advisors gathered there. But something shifted the moment I took my seat with the crown officially mine, the weight of final decision now genuinely resting with me rather than simply informing conversations that Rowan ultimately concluded. He sat beside me, not at the head of the table as he once had alone, but equal now, our chairs positioned deliberately side by side to reflect the partnership we had formally committed to."The northern border reports," Dara said, opening the session with her characteristic directness. "Scout activity has increased over the past two weeks. Nothing suggesting immediate movement, but Aldric's forces appear to be rebuilding faster than our earlier estimates suggested."I leaned forw
