Chapter 1

The moment consciousness flooded back into my brain, the first thing I saw was Vivian standing in front of me. She was shielding Blake, whose eyes were bloodshot and brimming with tears.Hadn't Blake already gotten the spot he wanted by turning on the waterworks? What was he crying about now?"Derek, the results are final. Stop acting like a child."Acting like a child?Right, before I fully took control of this body, the previous Derek had gotten into an argument with Vivian over the spot. The honors program at this high school had the absolute best resources in the entire city. It was also the only track whose students were eligible for the school's direct-admission program with elite universities. The original Derek had spent an entire year working toward that place, only to lose the peer vote by a single vote to Blake. That deciding vote came from his childhood best friend, Vivian."Derek, listen to me...""I get it. Fair is fair. I lost. I'll go to the regular track."I f

"After all, you're the one who rigged the vote in his favor."I raised an eyebrow at Blake, who was cowering behind Vivian.Vivian didn't seem to care in the slightest. "It's no big deal, don't worry. I'll definitely explain everything to them."With that, she blew past me like a gust of wind. So, anything that mattered to Derek was "no big deal," but Blake's stuff was top priority, right?I shrugged, utterly exasperated. How could a guy let himself stay hung up on a girl like her? One hundred and one lives wasted, and he never snapped out of it.When I turned around, Blake was standing by the stairwell. The helpless pretty-boy act was completely gone, replaced by the smirk of a victor."Derek, I won this round. Just wait. I'm going to win every round after this, too."Playing weak drives girls crazy. All those nights you spent studying until dawn meant nothing to Vivian."I just smiled. "Is that so? She treats me like trash today. What makes you think she won't do the exact

I looked at Vivian in confusion."You know how much heavier the workload is in honors compared to the regular track," she said. "Blake just transferred in yesterday, so he didn't know the drill and showed up late this morning. The teacher hit him with a thousand-word essay as punishment. "You're a great writer, Derek, so can you just write it for him?"Vivian tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. It was incredible how such a pretty face could belong to someone with such a trash personality. From watching Derek go through one hundred and one loops as a ghost, I knew he'd taken the fall and written essays for Blake before. He had agreed to do it only because Vivian promised to walk home with him every afternoon in exchange.Except she never kept her promise. Not even once.Derek always ended up walking home alone, forced to face his suffocating, abusive parents by himself."No way," I said, my voice flat and firm. The playful smile on Vivian's face instantly dropped. "De

If education had the power to reshape destiny, then I wanted to learn more practical skills. Before I could even finish my thought, Vivian leaned in close. Our faces were millimeters apart as she let out an oblivious smile."It's because of me, right?"I let out a heavy, tired sigh. There was zero point in trying to explain anything to someone like her."No, it isn't."Vivian didn't bother to reply, but she kept smiling. I shifted my gaze to her pocket, where her phone had been vibrating non-stop since we sat down."Your phone's been buzzing for quite a while. Aren't you going to pick it up?""Oh, it's nothing," she said, though her hands were already eagerly reaching into her pocket. The second her eyes hit the screen, her expression shifted. It transformed from mild annoyance into pure, fond affection—a look that was painful to watch.I usually preferred to mind my own business, but I couldn't stop the question from slipping out."Vivian... Do you give a damn about Derek at

One hundred and one times. This was the one hundred and first time I had desperately wanted to sever every tie between Derek and the girl standing in front of me."What? You're breaking up with me?"I let out a cold, sharp laugh."Were we ever actually together?"At those words, Vivian's pupils contracted violently, her breath catching in her throat.Taking advantage of her shock, I yanked my hand free, gathering up my notebooks and pen to leave. Before I could take a step, Vivian yanked me back with surprising force."I've told you a million times, I just feel sorry for Blake! I just want to help him out!"I'm still going to attend the same Ivy League university as you!"Why do you have to be so—""Save it," I snapped, cutting her off dead in her tracks.I tried to shake her off, but her grip was like steel.Suddenly, an even stronger force caught my other arm and pulled me toward her."He told you to let go. Are you deaf?"A girl's voice, brimming with fury yet fiercely

"Just wait, kiddo. I specialize in proving doubters wrong."That tractor actually ended up working after "she" fixed it, and the town kept using it for five long years after she left us.Elise truly committed to tutoring me. I used to just memorize physics formulas by heart, but she taught me a far more flexible way to break down and dissect each problem. Before dawn, we were up memorizing vocabulary, classical poetry and prose.During free periods in the morning, Elise made me grind through math and science practice papers—one full exam per hour. If I ran over the time limit, she would flick my forehead hard as punishment. Then, during the afternoons, she would go through every single wrong answer line by line.In the middle of such an intense, packed routine, I could feel my own consciousness expanding with every passing day.During that time, I bumped into Vivian and Blake a few times."No matter how hard kids in the regular track work, it's totally pointless." Blake scoffed

"Look who's talking," I shot back without looking up from my practice problems. "By the way, where's that precious Blake you're always protecting? Why isn't he here with you?"Did all that charity work for him not pay off?"This whole disaster had probably opened Blake's eyes to the fact that Vivian wasn't nearly as dependable as he'd assumed. If she got beaten by her parents over taking a bit of cash, his easy ticket to climbing the social ladder was looking a lot harder. So, after that, he started giving her the cold shoulder. The fallout hit Vivian hard. She plummeted from the top of the grade down to fifth place, tumbling right off her pedestal.Vivian lunged forward and tried to grab my wrist. "Derek, stop throwing a fit! Didn't you say your parents were going to beat you if you didn't hit the top ten on midterms?"It's fine, I'll walk home with you and explain everything to them."I violently yanked my hand free. "Don't bother."It was true: I hadn't quite hit the target D

I gave a half-hearted hum, but inside, I was secretly fuming. The only girl I was ever involved with was you, and even that was a total gray area.I never expected that even a century later in this era, she would once again end up helping me clean up my romantic mess. After her fight with Elise, Vivian announced to the whole school that she was going to make me regret my decision. She was determined to prove that I'd made the wrong choice by choosing the student ranked last in the grade over the student ranked first. Her way of making me "regret" it was going right back to flirting with Blake. The two of them stood outside our classroom door every single day, loudly explaining study problems. They were so noisy it practically amounted to a public disturbance.I saw Blake's face grow increasingly annoyed over time, though he couldn't completely burn bridges with Vivian either. When the final exam results were posted, I could finally walk through my front door with my head held h

"Because aside from fingerprints, handwriting is one of the most reliable ways to identify someone in our time."In intelligence work, verifying the authenticity of handwriting is a matter of life and death."I tilted my head and looked up at her."What if someone learns to forge it?""Then you practice until your writing is so impeccably precise that no one on earth can mimic it."The principal, Lydia Prescott, and several teachers from the honors program huddled together, comparing my exam booklet with the cheat sheet over and over again.Principal Prescott's age-roughened, raspy voice broke the silence in the room."Hmm... The handwriting is extremely similar."Blake's eyes flickered, a smirk creeping onto his lips."However, if you examine it closely, the differences are obvious. The cheat sheet is clearly a clumsy attempt at forgery.""That's impossible!" Blake shrieked, totally forgetting his sensitive, timid act. Realizing his slip-up, he immediately quickly ducked his

Wiping the cold sweat off her brow, Principal Prescott hung up the phone without even glancing at Blake, who was desperately trying to catch her eye.She knew my family dynamics and knew my parents didn't shower me with affection, which was why she felt bold enough to target me after Blake made a single improper advance toward her. However, she had completely overlooked the ultimate reason my parents sent me to this elite academy in the first place."Enough, we'll let the matter rest here."Principal Prescott gave me an ingratiating smile and handed my phone back with utmost deference. "Derek, let's just write this whole thing off as a misunderstanding."I smoothly slid my phone back into my pocket."Write it off?"Blake falsely accused me of cheating. How can we just let it go?"Then what would you like to do, Derek?" Principal Prescott asked, clasping her hands."An apology. He apologizes to me in front of the entire student body and faculty.""Are you kidding me?"Blake
