Ethan smiled faintly into the dim light of his room. "I'm well aware of my lack of corporate authority, Harper.""I mean it," she insisted. "These people are desperate, and when corporate executives get desperate, they start looking for someone to shoulder the liability. Don't let them saddle you with decisions you weren't given the structural authority to enforce.""That sounds suspiciously like advice born from bitter personal experience," Ethan noted dryly, picking up his watch."I've spent my entire adult life watching corporate directors shift blame onto consultants the moment a project turns red," Harper countered with a faint, wry chuckle. "I survived by learning how to stand outside the blast radius.""And you think I'm standing in it?""I think you're walking directly into the hypocenter," she said smoothly. "Which brings me to the last thing."Ethan slid his leather portfolio under his arm, his keys jingling in his hand. "Go ahead.""I genuinely don't know what kind of mess

"What specific piece of real-time data are you basing that command on?" Ethan asked. He pointed toward the loading floor visible through the lower glass windows. "If a supervisor wants to hold a truck at Bay Four, I don't want to hear about general congestion. I want to know what specific physical obstacle is sitting in that bay."He gestured toward the main display board. "If a manager wants to reroute twelve tons of freight to the eastern depot, I don't want to hear that the system recommended it. I want to know if anyone has actually spoken to the yard master at the eastern depot to confirm they have an open dock."He looked directly into Richard’s eyes. "And if anyone's answer to that question is 'because the system status board says so,' then that command is immediately canceled, because your system status board is currently lying to you."The immediate area around them had gone noticeably quieter. Several nearby desk managers had stopped mid-sentence, their headsets pulled sligh

Richard slowly turned his head to look out through the glass wall at the massive operations room, where dozens of managers had spent six grueling hours arguing, yelling, and making desperate, uncoordinated decisions."So... the receiving hubs were fine the entire time," Richard whispered, a tone of profound, bitter disbelief creeping into his voice. "The drivers were fine. The trucks were fine. The entire western network ground to a halt simply because a piece of software stopped asking a question.""And nobody caught it," Ethan added gently, "because everyone in this room was so overwhelmed by the red lights on that wall that nobody stopped to ask why the lights were red in the first place."Richard closed his eyes for a long, heavy second, letting out a breath that seemed to carry the weight of the entire night. When he opened them, he looked at Ethan with an expression that bordered on reverence."All right, Ethan," Richard said, his voice now entirely devoid of executive bluster.

Gerald flipped open the folder, tapping a manicured finger against the top page. "Mr. Vale has been deployed twice in the last six weeks under emergency contingency protocols.""That is correct," Harper replied evenly."Both deployments occurred without a conventional departmental sponsor or a standard procurement review," Gerald noted, looking around the table at the other senior executives. "He does not report to Operations.""No," Harper said."He does not report to Technical Infrastructure.""No.""Nor does he fall under the administrative jurisdiction of Transportation or Supply Chain Logistics.""No, he does not."Gerald leaned back in his leather executive chair, resting his hands together. "Then perhaps you can clarify a fundamental point for the board, Harper. Who, exactly, does this man report to when he steps onto a Horizon logistics floor?"Harper did not hesitate for a fraction of a second. "He reports to me.""Precisely," Gerald said, a faint, sharp smile touching the co

Harper laughed softly across the line—a genuine, warm sound that contrasted sharply with her usual polished executive tone. "That is the price of being uniquely capable, Ethan. Off-grid specialists don't get the luxury of structured nine-to-five schedules.""I was under the impression that off-grid specialists were supposed to enjoy absolute freedom," Ethan noted dryly, reaching for a piece of toast. "Yet somehow, I've spent the last two months running around regional distribution centers at three in the morning.""You have absolute freedom," Harper reminded him with mild amusement. "You have the freedom to say no whenever I call."Ethan paused, the toast halfway to his mouth. "That is a remarkably dangerous thing to remind me of, Harper.""It would be," she conceded cheerfully, "if I didn't already know that your curiosity gets the better of you every single time a system breaks."Ethan shook his head with a faint, quiet smile. "Fair point. What's on your mind this morning? Is anothe
