Clara’s POV Nobody in the kitchen moved. The skin on my milk had begun to wrinkle, and I stared at it because I couldn’t look at Eliza. Footprints going down. None coming back up. “Who?” Lucan asked finally. His voice was very level, the way it went when he was holding something enormous at arm’s length. “I don’t know.” Eliza turned her mug a quarter-turn. “Boots, by the tread. Three or four pairs, one of them dragging. I didn’t follow them. I’m old, not stupid.” “We close the library,” Milo said. “Tonight. Pups on every door.” “We do.” Lucan rose, and the chair scraped. “And you take the first watch, and I take the second, and nobody goes down that stair alone.” “Lucan.” My hand found his wrist. “Go. I’ll be here.” He looked at me for a long moment, then bent and kissed my hair, hard, as if checking it was still there. I heard the back door close. Then Milo’s steps, then silence. Eliza began collecting mugs. “Draven’s in the east parlor,” she said, without turning.
