Chapter 1

I'd barely stepped out of the classroom when a group of guys surrounded me. Damon stood at the front—the boy I'd grown up with since we were kids."Evelyn, just play along for a sec."Before I could even react, he swung a baton straight at the back of my head.Everything went black. But right before I lost consciousness, I caught a flicker of hesitation in his eyes. When I woke up, my entire body was wrapped in white bandages, from head to toe. Only my eyes and nostrils were left exposed. I tried to struggle, but my limbs were tied so tight the bindings cut into my skin and squeezed the air right out of my lungs. The hallway was packed with students. Phone flashes stung my eyes like needles as they laughed."Whoa, an actual mummy. This is hilarious.""Isn't that Evelyn? The top of our grade?""Heard Damon did this to impress his new girl. Used her as entertainment."I tried to scream, but my mouth was taped shut. Then they started spitting on me. Thick, sticky droplets slid down my bod

"Hey! Evelyn!"When I didn't even look back, Damon's voice cracked with unease. He started to go after me—but the second he moved, Sophia grabbed his arm, her eyes already glistening."Damon… did I do something wrong? Evelyn's going to hate me now, isn't she?""It's all my fault—I'm just too poor. I've never seen a real mummy before. If only I had a background like hers…"Damon glanced at my retreating figure one more time. Then he stopped. Didn't follow. Instead, he softened his voice for her."Don't worry. Evelyn won't stay mad. I'll smooth things over, she'll come around.""You're always so kind, Sophia. Not like Evelyn—can't even take a joke anymore."I didn't bother turning around. Just kept walking.By the time I got home, my phone buzzed with a text. Damon.[Evelyn. Fine, be mad at me. But Sophia didn't do anything wrong. She was so scared she cried. You need to apologize to her tomorrow.][Do that, and I'll take you to the amusement park. I know you've been dying to ride the Fe

The next morning, Damon pushed open my front door like he owned the place.I'd given him the code back when we used to take tutoring sessions together at my house. He saw the suitcase I was packing and his brow furrowed."Evelyn, I already agreed to live off-campus with you. Why are you still set on the dorm?""Don't you know Oakwood only has one honors dorm?""You've got everything—why do you have to compete with Sophia over this?"Sophia stood behind him, eyes red-rimmed, fingers twisting the hem of her shirt."Evelyn, I'm sorry… I know you look down on me. I didn't mean for any of this.""Yesterday, I just mentioned it casually. I didn't think they'd actually do it. But everyone had fun, right?"They'd laughed at me at my lowest yesterday. And today, I was supposed to be the bigger person. Their fun was built on my pain.Did they even know that honors dorm was built specifically for me? Even if I didn't take it, Sophia would never qualify.I looked at them coldly and pointed at the

When I came to, I was tied to a chair in the classroom. The ropes had already cut into my skin, leaving raw red marks. Through the door, I could hear their whispers."Damon, I told you—you spoil her too much. That's why she treats you like dirt now.""If we hadn't shown up in time, Sophia would've been stripped bare by Evelyn.""So just because she's top of the grade, she gets to bully Sophia like that? Sophia was crying.""If you don't teach her a lesson, how are you gonna face Sophia?"But I hadn't done anything. From start to finish, this was their script. Their show.Sophia's voice came through, dripping with wounded innocence."Damon, Evelyn's an art student. Of course she looks down on someone普通 like me. She said she wanted to use me as a live canvas for body painting. If the others hadn't stopped her… I'd be the one tied up in that classroom right now."The guys chimed in."Exactly. Let Evelyn be the model this time. Let her taste what it's like to be looked down on. Knock that

When I landed in New York, the weight finally lifted off my chest.A teacher from the International Academy was already waiting at the airport. The moment she saw the marks on my skin, her face crumpled with sympathy."Evelyn, are you okay? They went way too far—how could they do this to you! I'm taking you to the hospital right now."I shook my head and handed her my admission letter. "Please, help me get enrolled. As soon as possible."Once the paperwork was done, I joined Professor Bell's studio. The professor had gentle eyes behind her glasses and a warm smile."Welcome to my studio, Evelyn. I'll be overseeing your studies and life for the next four years. If you ever need anything, come to me directly. I've seen your work—it's exceptional. A student with your kind of talent is rare. I'm sure your classmates will love having you around."I blinked, then nodded.Back when I first started school, my family sent ten bodyguards to protect me. Everyone looked at me with fear—I was the C

Damon punched in the code to my front gate—and it didn't work. The lock had been changed. The house behind it sat dark and empty. He forced himself to breathe. Finally, the door cracked open—my butler.Damon tried to push past him. The butler stepped in his way."Mr. Johnson, Miss Claremont left instructions. You're not allowed inside."Damon froze. "Left? School starts tomorrow. Where is she going?" His voice cracked. "She can't actually leave me, can she?"The butler said nothing. He didn't know where I'd gone either.Damon shook his head, hard. "No. No way. Evelyn wouldn't leave. She's just pissed. She's ignoring me, that's all."He yelled into the dark house: "Evelyn… Evelyn…"Silence. He told himself it was fine. She'd cool off. She always came back. Just like every other fight. He'd apologize tomorrow at school, and she'd soften. She always did.But the next morning, he stood at the school gate for hours. I never showed. He clutched my admission letter, irritation creeping in. He

Damon stood there, frozen. The only thing left in his head was that Evelyn had gone to the International Academy.Three years ago, she'd turned them down—for him. Now, she'd left him over a joke.He collapsed onto the ground, not caring who saw. All dignity gone. When school started, he wasn't the same person anymore. He used to race cars with his crew every night. Now he had no interest. He'd zone out in class, sit alone during breaks, and brush off anyone who tried to talk to him. Days blurred together. Everything felt hollow.Sophia found him sitting blankly in the empty classroom one day, fuming."Damon! You said you had inside info. There's no honors dorm at Oakwood. Everyone's laughing at me like I'm crazy.""Who the hell is Evelyn, really? All the teachers say—no Evelyn, no honors dorm. What aren't you telling me?"He looked at her like she was a joke. "She's the Claremont heiress."Sophia's face went pale. She repeated it, barely audible. "What?""She's the Claremont heiress."

Chapter 8

My mother made my identity public, and the family officially launched me into the heir training program.Life at the International Academy started falling into place. That was when Julian Cornwall walked up to me."Miss Claremont, care to show me around campus?"His smile was warm, and compared to the boy I remembered, he'd grown into someone handsome and self-assured. From the time I was little, both our families had been quietly pushing us together. When my mother found out I had a thing for Damon, she'd shake her head with regret."Evelyn, sweetheart—what do you see in that boy? Julian is exactly what I'd want in a son-in-law."And whenever the topic came up, Julian's mother would sigh too. "Why did Evelyn have to fall for Damon of all people?"I couldn't help a small smirk. "Mr. Cornwall, you've been at this school for two years. Do you really need a freshman to give you the tour?"He laughed. "I came to pick you up. Your mother asked me to look after you."Julian had always been l

Chapter 9

The doctor put three stitches in my ear. Katherine nearly cried when she saw it."Evelyn, that Sophia is pure evil! How could she do that to such a pretty face?""If I'd been there, I'd have put two bullets in her—let her see what it feels like to be scarred!"I patted her hand. "It's not that bad. Just a scratch."But when Julian started showing up every day with lunch and walking me home from class, Katherine's eyes went all sly."Evelyn… is this your new thing?"I nearly dropped my fork. "He's like a brother."She grinned wider. "Oh, please. That man is into you. I've never seen a 'brother' hover like that. And honestly? With a face like yours, can you blame him?"I froze. Julian? Into me?I'd never thought about it. All I knew was that he'd always looked out for me. When I was busy chasing Damon, Julian kept his distance—but sometimes I'd catch him subtly competing with Damon. Was that what liking someone looked like? Because Damon had taught me that liking meant teasing, poking fu

Chapter 10

I stared at Julian in shock until he told me everything. It was Damon who had pushed me into the lake. Julian had dived in and pulled me out. He'd collapsed from exhaustion afterward, and Damon had been the one sitting by my bedside the whole time. So I'd assumed Damon was my savior. And he'd never corrected me.Before I could even process it enough to confront him, my phone wouldn't stop ringing. Reporters, one after another. I ignored every call and opened my browser. The headlines screamed:[Claremont Heiress Humiliates Ex-Boyfriend with New Lover to Secure Her Position][Claremont Heiress's Messy Love Life—Unfit to Be Heir]The photos showed Julian holding me, and me pulling my hand from Damon's grip. But Damon's move was amateur. He didn't know that both families had been quietly pushing Julian and me together for years. Marriage between us had always been the unspoken goal.I uploaded the videos of what they'd done to me. The backlash buried Damon and the Johnson family overnight
