All Chapters of Unprofessional Conduct: The Storme Shield: Chapter 11 - Chapter 20

The air in the industrial district was heavy with the metallic tang of cooling iron and the rotting sweetness of damp cardboard. It was a place that smelled of history—the kind of history that had been discarded, rusted over, and left to disintegrate in the shadows of high-rises that were only a few miles away. Elias followed Roderick through a narrow, oil-stained alleyway, his expensive loafers clicking uncomfortably against the uneven cobblestones. Every shadow seemed to stretch toward them like a hungry hand.“If this is where we’re staying, I’d like to formally register a complaint,” Elias whispered, his voice echoing off the damp brick walls. “I’ve seen better accommodations in horror movies, and usually, the people in those houses don’t survive until the credits roll.”Roderick didn’t look back. He moved with a predatory silence, his boots barely making a sound despite his substantial frame. He stopped before a rusted steel door that was partially obscured by a stack of discarde

The safehouse was, by any reasonable metric, an absolute catastrophe of architecture. It consisted of two rooms: a main area that smelled aggressively of wet concrete and broken dreams, and a cramped bathroom where the sink groaned in agony every time the faucet was turned. Elias sat on a plastic crate, his knees pulled to his chest, shivering as he stared at the dark, pulsating patches of black mold that climbed the walls like a slow-motion infestation.Roderick was pacing. It was a rhythmic, calculated movement, the kind that reminded Elias of a caged panther. The man had been silent for nearly twenty minutes, his eyes constantly darting toward the sliver of gray light leaking through the boarded-up window. He was currently stripping down his tactical gear, methodically cleaning a compact sidearm with a piece of microfiber cloth that looked like it had been salvaged from a dumpster behind an auto-body shop."You know," Elias said, breaking the silence, his voice cracking slightly, "

The air inside the safehouse was stagnant, thick with the scent of damp masonry and the bitter, sharp tang of gun oil. Elias sat on his makeshift stool—a milk crate that creaked under his weight—and watched Roderick. He had been watching him for hours, tracking the way the man’s hands moved with terrifying, machine-like precision. Roderick wasn’t just cleaning his weapon; he was performing a ritual, a repetitive series of motions that kept the dark edges of his own mind at bay.Elias shifted, his loafers scraping against the grit-covered concrete. "You ever get tired of that?" he asked, gesturing toward the disassembled pistol on the scarred table. "I mean, really? You’ve been scrubbing the same slide for ten minutes. If you’re trying to turn it into a mirror, I hate to tell you, but the lighting in here is doing you no favors."Roderick didn’t look up. His face was a mask of granite, his jaw tight enough to crack stone. "Complacency is how people like us end up as headlines in the mo

The silence in the safehouse was shattered not by a gunshot, but by a sound far more mundane and infinitely more terrifying: the heavy, rhythmic thud of a steel-toed boot against the exterior door. It was the kind of industrial, unapologetic kick that announced a social call from people who did not value conversation.Elias froze, his fingers still hovering over the hidden compartment in Roderick’s gear bag. His heart did a frantic, uneven flutter against his ribs. He looked up, catching Roderick’s gaze. The transition was instantaneous. The stoic, contemplative man from a moment ago vanished, replaced by a predator who had spent his entire life waiting for the perimeter to be breached. Roderick didn’t panic; he didn’t even blink. He simply set his slide-less pistol down on the table with a soft clack and held up a hand, a silent command for Elias to stay exactly where he was."Rent is due, Silas," a voice boomed from the other side of the door. It was deep, gravelly, and carried the

The voice on the other side of the door was not just a sound; it was a physical weight pressing against the corrugated steel. Kaelen’s heavy boots scraped against the concrete landing, accompanied by the metallic shing of a crowbar being wedged into the frame. The Ironmongers were not known for their patience, nor were they known for their subtlety. They were a hammer, and this safehouse was merely a nail waiting to be driven into the rotting floorboards of the industrial district.Roderick caught Elias’s wide, panicked eyes and held them with a stare so steady it felt like an anchor in a rising tide. He didn't speak. He simply gestured toward the far end of the narrow kitchenette, where a mess of exposed, live-wire heating cables hung down like a nest of copper snakes from the ceiling. Elias understood the silent directive before his brain could even frame the question. He moved, his sneakers barely whispering against the grime-slicked linoleum, while Roderick positioned himself behi
