Chapter 1: Nadia's Taste For FreedomNadia's POVI always wondered what it felt like to belong to the world outside. To walk beneath an open sky without calculating the distance to the nearest shadow. To hear the hum of a crowd without my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. All my life, home had been the cold, damp bellies of the cavern walls hidden deep within the mountain peak. My world was defined by the rush of the subterranean river, the slick scales of the fish I caught with my bare hands, and the sharp edge of the hunting knives my grandmother forced me to master. Survival was my routine. Hunting was my reality. And hiding was my law."You are a Blackblood, Nadia," my grandmother’s voice echoed in my mind, a ghost that followed me into every dream. "The last true survivor. Your father was slaughtered because of what flows in his veins, and your mother breathed her last breath bringing you into a world that wants you erased. The Blackbloods are extinct to them—a

Chapter 2: The Fall of the SanctuaryNadia's POVI didn't look back. The harsh sound of guard horns echoed up the mountain slopes, bouncing off the sheer cliff faces like thunder. My lungs burned with every breath, and blood trickled down my cheek, sticky and warm against my cold skin. I pushed my legs harder, leaping over jagged rocks and tearing through thick brush I had memorised since childhood.I knew these trails better than anyone. I knew which roots were loose, which ledges would crumble, and where the mountain mist hung thick enough to swallow a girl whole. Within minutes, the shouting voices of the pack guards faded into the distance behind me, but the terror in my chest only grew tighter.I had ruined everything. Eighteen years of total secrecy destroyed in a single, careless afternoon.I burst through the hidden curtain of hanging vines and tumbled into the mouth of our cave, breathless and trembling."Grandma!" I gasped, stumbling into the main cavern. "Grandma, we have t

Chapter 3: The Price of LoyaltyNadia's POV The home I had known for eighteen years was buried, along with the only person who had ever loved me.Tears tracked clean lines through the dirt and dried blood on my cheeks. I clutched my father’s journal to my chest, my hands shaking so violently I could barely hold it. I was supposed to run. My grandmother’s final command echoed in my ears: Step into the light. Live, demanding that I head west toward the border, far away from this territory. But as I stood at the edge of the tree line, looking down at the smoking fires of the outer town, a cold knot of dread twisted in my gut.Mara.When I ran, I had left her standing right in front of the pack guard. She had seen my blood. She had heard the horns. If the Alpha’s enforcers realised Mara was my friend, they would drag her into an interrogation room. They would break her.I caused this, I thought, swallowing back a swell of nausea. I can’t let her die because of my mistake.Ignoring the sc

Chapter 4: The Royal ScentNadia's POVI was soaked to the bone, bruised, and bleeding from a dozen shallow cuts. My hands immediately flew to the pack strapped tight across my chest, unzipping the oilcloth wrapping with trembling fingers as I released a shuddering breath of relief. My father's journal was dry. My grandmother's map was safe.Sitting alone in the damp darkness of the rock alcove, I pulled my knees to my chest. The silence of the wild borderlands pressed in on me, heavy and suffocating. No cave. No grandmother to guide me. No friend to laugh with behind the market carts.Mara's tear-stained face flashed in my mind: her terrified green eyes, her broken apology right before the guards swarmed out of the trees.I'm so sorry, Nadia... they forced me.A fresh wave of pain sliced through my heart, but I forced my jaw to clench, blinking away the heat in my eyes as I reached down and grabbed a handful of coarse sand from the riverbank, scrubbing the remaining trace of dark, ir

Chapter 5: The Hostile SanctuaryNadia's POV I remember the exact moment when the rocks and earth crashed over my grandma's back, her pained yells mixing with Mara's bleeding snivelling in the distance.'I'm so sorry, Nadia... they have no choice', she cried, her voice broken in the thick forest.I squeezed my eyes shut, pushing the memory away from the back of my mind as I pulled my hood lower, trying to block it out.I am a blackblood, and now close enough to the destination my father spoke of.The trees opened up ahead, revealing the colossal chasm the blackened canyons flanked on both sides. The strange acrid smell filled the area, clinging to the back of my throat in nervous anticipation. This was the reason why my father's mark burned soothingly with a hint of warmth. There it was.Somehow my chest lightened, the weight of the path I've undertaken pressing down on me with all the force of a thousand memories. That small flame of hope, thought long extinguished when I first watc

Chapter 6: Shadows at the Gate Nadia's POV The cell felt like a tomb. Stone walls, icy air; sometimes I couldn’t feel my own fingers. Droplets dripped from the ceiling, each one loud enough to stretch out the silence, poking at my nerves like a slow, dull knife. I huddled in the corner, knees tucked up, eyes glued to the iron bars blocking any hope of escape. My arms still throbbed where the guards twisted them back, but those bruises? Nothing compared to the sick emptiness clawing at my chest. Funny. My whole life, I chased stories about this canyon. Back in our mountain cave, huddled with Grandma through endless winters, I’d listen to her talk about the Blackbloods, our people, like they were legends. She made them seem so proud, so unstoppable. “You carry their magic, Nadia,” she’d say, her voice gentle but strong. “You belong with them. They’ll keep you safe.” It was a lie, or maybe just a wish. I laughed, sharp and bitter, way too loud for this miserable cell. Turns out, the

Chapter 7: The King's ClaimNadia's POVThe iron doors to my cell groaned, then slammed against the stone wall with a hollow bang. Three clan guards stepped into the shadows, eyes hard, holding thick iron chains reinforced with cold-forged silver."On your feet, girl," the lead guard shouted. He sounded scared, even as he tried to sound tough. "Elder Aaron’s orders. You’re going out to the courtyard."I kept my mouth shut. I stood up slowly, straw falling from my tunic, and held out my wrists. If they wanted to drag me out, they'd get none of my tears. The silver shackles clicked shut around my wrists, biting into my skin, but I didn't flinch. I wouldn’t give them the satisfaction. If my own clan wanted to hand me over, I’d go with my head high. They marched me up twisting stairs and into the wide stone courtyard. The sky was a heavy, grey bruise. Rain poured over the cobblestones. Clan members crowded the balconies and walkways, hundreds staring down, faces carved with guilt, fear, a

Chapter 8: The Royal Tent Nadia's POV The royal tent wasn’t anything as I’d pictured. No ragged canvas or quick camp fixes; this place was huge, dark velvet everywhere, heavy ironwood beams overhead. A brazier in the corner gave off this wall of heat and filled the space with cedar and dried herbs. Across the room, a big wooden bed disappeared under piles of furs. Maps of the western territories were spread across the central table, corners curling up where someone had shoved them around.I hovered by the entrance, refusing to sit. My hand stayed glued to my ribs, right over my father’s journal.“Go ahead, take off the cloak,” Lyra said. His voice always caught me off guard, deep, calm, every word heavy. He locked the tent behind us, the solid thump of the latch making my nerves jump.I didn’t move an inch. I just watched as he unbuckled his weapon belt and set his broadsword on the table. The metal hit the wood with a hollow smack. He took off his drenched mantle too, and underneat

Chapter 9: Shadows of the CitadelNadia's POV The tent felt charged, every bit of silence drawn tight as a wire. Lyra’s hand hovered close to my cheek, a warmth brushing against me in the cold air. His gold eyes locked onto mine, and it was almost suffocating. My mind yelled at me to step away, to break the spell, but I couldn’t move. The mark on my wrist pulsed with that same gentle burn I felt when he touched me, keeping me stuck in place. Then a voice shattered everything. "Sire!" General Valerius barked from outside, heavy boots sloshing through the mud. "Dispatches from the High Citadel, urgent. We have a problem."Lyra stiffened, all that open warmth gone in a blink, his expression sharpening like ice. He stood, slipping back into his old armour as he straightened his tunic, cutting off the firelight with his shadow."Come in," Lyra said, voice flat and cold.Valerius ducked into the tent, looking grim, a rolled scroll in his hand, the seal bright red, an iron shield crushed

Chapter 10: The Serpent’s PassNadia’s POVDawn rolled in with bruised purple and grey clouds stretching over the western ridge. The rain quit, finally, but the wind didn’t let up; it had that biting, frosty edge that slipped under your clothes and down your spine. We were all breaking camp, boots sloshing in mud and warhorses snorting hard enough to fog the air.I leaned against the bulk of a black stallion, the kind that could easily trample a man, tugging my borrowed wool mantle closer around my shoulders. It still smelled like cedar and rain, Lyra, lingering close even when he wasn’t there.I caught Valerius eyeing me as he tightened his saddle straps. “Can you ride?” he asked, all clipped and suspicious.“I’m from the mountains, General.” My voice didn’t shake; I was busy fussing with the reins, cool and steady. “I could ride before I could spell my name.”He grunted at that, a little respect showing through all the scars. “Good,” he said. “Serpent’s Pass is no place for amateurs
