Chapter 1

After checking myself out of the hospital, I took a cab to Liam Carter's company.Standing outside the building, I suddenly felt like a stranger to the place where I'd worked for nine years.I'd only been gone a month, yet all my information had already been wiped from the system. Even security refused to let me inside. With no other choice, I pulled out my phone and called Liam, but he never picked up.Instead, Hailey Foster video-called me.On the screen, she gave me a slightly embarrassed smile."Nora Bennett, I didn't expect you to be discharged from the hospital so soon. Liam's worried about my safety, so the company isn't letting strangers in anymore. "Don't worry. I'll tell security to let you through right away."At Hailey's word, the doors that had been firmly shut to me opened.I stood there blankly for a few seconds before I walked in slowly. The door to Liam's office was open. When I pushed it wider, I found Hailey sitting on the couch in a skimpy camisole, smiling faintly

He stared directly at me, as though trying to make sure I really meant what I'd said."You two grew up together. You've known each other longer than you've known me, and the engagement was our parents' decision. It's none of my business."Don't worry. I really am resigning. I'm not jealous, and I'm not doing this out of spite."Liam opened his mouth to say something else. But Hailey poked her head out of the office."Liam, where did you put my panties? The lace pair..."Her eyes met mine. Only then did she seem to realize I was still there. She put on an innocent expression."Sorry. I didn't know you were still here. Liam and I have known each other for so long that I forgot for a second that you're still his girlfriend."I gave her a perfunctory reply and left the building.Early the next morning, my mother called as soon as she heard I'd been discharged."Sweetheart, how are you feeling? I'm getting old, and all I want is for you to come back sooner and spend some time with me. "You

I didn't argue with him or make a scene, but after Hailey called for him a few more times, whatever patience Liam had left for me finally ran out. He turned and walked away without looking back, leaving me with one last weary remark."Nora, I'm getting tired of having to explain myself to you every day. Can't you try to be a little more understanding?"Whenever Liam and I had a disagreement, he would always say something like that with exhaustion written all over his face, and every time, I would feel sorry for him and start wondering whether I had been too demanding.Once I had talked myself out of my own feelings, I would go right back to losing myself in a relationship that had long since stopped being worth anything.Liam left in an expensive suit with Hailey beside him in a haute couture gown, and as I watched them walk away together, I had to admit that they really did look like a perfect match.Watching their retreating sillhouettes, I settled myself and began packing up my thi

This year, however, would be the last.I sat alone in the restaurant, watching the minutes tick by as more than half an hour passed beyond the time we had agreed to meet. Liam was still nowhere to be seen.Just as I was about to call him, fireworks suddenly exploded across the sky outside the restaurant, one burst after another forming the words, "Happy Birthday, Hailey!"Everyone in the restaurant was immediately drawn to the spectacle, and when I followed their gazes, I finally found the man who had kept me waiting.Liam was dressed in a suit, holding a bouquet of roses as he knelt on one knee in front of Hailey and proposed to her, while the giant screen on a nearby building began cycling through engagement photos of the two of them."Mr. Carter really went all out. That screen costs a million a minute, and he rented the whole thing.""But I thought Mr. Carter's girlfriend looked different.""What girlfriend? Rich men have their fun. A woman like that is just a mistress. This is the

Chapter 5

When my flight landed, the first person I saw was my mother.Thinking about it, we hadn't seen each other in nearly ten years, yet she still looked as radiant and full of life as ever. I forced a smile and tucked my hastily bandaged right hand behind my back, but before I could even say anything, she pulled me into a tight embrace."You've lost weight."Her eyes were red as she fussed over me, repeatedly brushing imaginary specks of dust from my clothes. Eventually, she couldn't hold it in anymore and turned away to wipe the tears from the corners of her eyes.Seeing her like that made my throat tighten as well, and the sting in my nose nearly brought me to tears. When Mom married my stepfather, she had called me countless times, asking me to move to Archuslea and settle down there with her.But Liam and I had just gotten together at the time, and all I could think about was working hard enough to prove myself to his parents and make them accept me. As such, no matter how many times

Chapter 6

Liam's voice was icy, as though he wished he could reach through the phone, drag me back himself, and force me to apologize to Hailey on the spot. For a moment, I found myself remembering that there had once been a time when Liam had defended me with the same intensity.Back then, hardly anyone thought the two of us belonged together.Even though I had earned my position at the company through my own abilities, people still accused me of getting to where I did through Liam and even spread rumors that I had slept my way into it. When one of my coworkers started spreading those inappropriate rumors about me, Liam took them straight to court simply because they had damaged my reputation. He told me that my reputation mattered just as much as the company's and that he would never allow anyone to slander me.But now, the person he would go to such lengths to protect was someone else.It was no longer me.Because of how fiercely he had stood up for me back then, I gave up the chance to move

Chapter 7

Julian had always been rather reserved in my memory, but around me, he suddenly seemed to have no shortage of things to say."So you're living here now too? Liam didn't come with you? I thought you two would be getting married by now."Something flickered in Julian's eyes as though he were hoping for a particular answer. My hand paused for a moment before I smiled."We broke up, and we won't be getting married."Maybe I imagined it, but when he heard the words "broke up," I could have sworn he smiled. No sooner had I finished speaking than a loud crash suddenly came from behind me.I turned instinctively and froze when I saw Liam. His expression was icy as he strode toward me, and without a word, he grabbed my wrist."Nora, did you leave the country just to run off with some other man? And you still have the nerve to say you love me?"Liam spoke through gritted teeth, the veins in his forehead standing out with rage.I couldn't understand why he was so furious, much less why he was eve

Chapter 8

"You're the bastard who's been trying to steal her from me, aren't you?"I instinctively stepped in front of Julian and, without even knowing where the strength came from, shoved Liam away with both hands. He staggered backward, lost his footing, and crashed to the ground. When he jerked his head up to look at me, his eyes had already turned red. "You pushed me?"His disbelief quickly gave way to anger, and by the time he spoke again, he was practically shouting."You actually pushed me for another man! You were never like this before. You're in love with him!"I had no time to deal with his accusations. My attention was entirely on Julian, who was, after all, the blind date my mother had personally arranged for me. If anything happened to him, I wouldn't even know where to begin explaining it to her.Julian seemed to understand what I was thinking. He shook his head and gave me a small, reassuring smile."I'm fine. Don't worry."Liam got back to his feet somewhat awkwardly, and jud

Chapter 9

"Nora, I know you don't want to see me. You even moved away just so you could disappear from my life, but there are still so many things I need to say to you."Liam's voice caught as he spoke, and before long, he was crying on the other end of the phone. My grip tightened slightly around the phone, but I said nothing. There was nothing left for us to talk about. At that family dinner, he had slapped me in front of everyone, then shoved me down the stairs even after I begged him not to leave. Before I lost consciousness, I had watched him rush to shield Hailey without hesitation, crying out that he would never marry me.While I was fighting to stay alive in the ICU, Liam and Hailey had already set a date for their wedding.I had endured that kind of heartbreak for far too long, and I had no intention of putting myself through it again.Even now, after settling down overseas and hearing my old friends tell me how Liam had gone almost insane after I left, how they were convinced he still

Chapter 10

"This is the good-luck charm you got for me when I was sick, and afterward you bought me this bracelet to wear it on. "You worried that a bracelet might look a little too feminine on a guy, but I never once took it off. Do you really not want any of this anymore?"Liam kept his head lowered, unable to look at me as he clenched the bracelet tightly in his hand. There was something almost pitiful in his voice.I still remember how excited I had been when I first gave it to him."Do you think people will make fun of you for wearing a bracelet? If you really don't want to wear it, that's fine. Just keep it somewhere safe in a drawer!"Even though I had said that, Liam had put it on without the slightest hesitation, and he had continued wearing it for the next nine years."Liam, what's past is past. If there's something you want to say, just say it."He seemed ready to pick up one of the diaries I had written and use it to draw me back into our memories, but when his eyes met mine again, t
