Chapter 3

Author: Nora Blythe
I didn't argue with him or make a scene, but after Hailey called for him a few more times, whatever patience Liam had left for me finally ran out.

He turned and walked away without looking back, leaving me with one last weary remark.

"Nora, I'm getting tired of having to explain myself to you every day. Can't you try to be a little more understanding?"

Whenever Liam and I had a disagreement, he would always say something like that with exhaustion written all over his face, and every time, I would feel sorry for him and start wondering whether I had been too demanding.

Once I had talked myself out of my own feelings, I would go right back to losing myself in a relationship that had long since stopped being worth anything.

Liam left in an expensive suit with Hailey beside him in a haute couture gown, and as I watched them walk away together, I had to admit that they really did look like a perfect match.

Watching their retreating sillhouettes, I settled myself and began packing up my things.

Over the past nine years, Liam and I had made countless memories together, and for the longest time, I had truly believed he loved me.

Even the villa had been decorated entirely according to my tastes.

He had always preferred leaving the balcony open, saying that one day, when we had children, he wanted us all to sit out there together and soak up the sun.

But we never even made it as far as having children before he stopped loving me.

Back then, we hadn't hired a housekeeper or any other staff for the villa.

Knowing my stomach was sensitive, Liam would personally cook nutritious meals for me every day, but those days had long since faded into a blur of distant memories.

There had also been a time when he worried I would get cold on my way to work, so he secretly knitted me a scarf. His stitches were clumsy, but the scarf had been made with unmistakable affection.

"If everyone else gets one, then you should have one too."

As he wrapped it around my neck, he kissed me on the cheek, ruffled my hair, then nuzzled against my neck like an affectionate cat.

"Come home early after work, or your boyfriend's going to worry."

I couldn't remember exactly when Liam had grown tired of our relationship.

The first time I proposed to him, he told me we were still too young and that if we married too early, we might end up like all those other couples who eventually couldn't stand the sight of each other.

The second time, I had prepared an entire surprise for him, only to accidentally overhear a conversation between him and one of his friends.

"The excitement I used to feel with Nora is gone. Being with her is so boring now, but she's really good to me, so I don't want to break up with her.

"She's the one who keeps proposing to me, and I haven't shown the slightest interest. Can she seriously not tell I don't love her anymore?"

And the last time...

I had put everything on the line and told his parents that I wanted to marry Liam, even going so far as to say I didn't need any money from his family for the marriage.

Hailey, his childhood sweetheart, had been there too, and the moment she heard what I said, she became angry and jealous.

Liam panicked so completely that he seemed to forget the way he had once loved me.

The man who used to be unable to tolerate anyone hurting me had ended up pushing me down the stairs with his own hands.

After having every declaration of love rejected again and again, I finally understood who Liam had been waiting for all along.

A tear slipped from the corner of my eye and landed on the old, worn scarf in my hands. I wiped my face, took a deep breath, then hired someone to enclose the balcony with windows.

I tore up every diary entry I had written about Liam over the past nine years, and in a final flourish, took a lighter to the scarf until there was nothing left but ashes.

Throughout the next week, Liam didn't send me a single message, and by then, I had already moved all my belongings out of the villa.

He assumed I was throwing another tantrum and didn't bother paying me any attention. But after enough time passed, he seemed to remember that I existed.

Three days before I was due to leave the country, the day marking ten years since Liam and I had gotten together finally arrived, and for once, he called me.

"Nora, our tenth anniversary is coming up. I booked a restaurant. We should sit down and have a proper talk."

As soon as he finished speaking, a text came through with the address.

It was the same restaurant where Liam and I had officially gotten together all those years ago.

...

In keeping with what I'd done every year before, I prepared an anniversary gift for him.

  • When Love Ends in Tears and Heartbreak   Chapter 10

"This is the good-luck charm you got for me when I was sick, and afterward you bought me this bracelet to wear it on. "You worried that a bracelet might look a little too feminine on a guy, but I never once took it off. Do you really not want any of this anymore?"Liam kept his head lowered, unable to look at me as he clenched the bracelet tightly in his hand. There was something almost pitiful in his voice.I still remember how excited I had been when I first gave it to him."Do you think people will make fun of you for wearing a bracelet? If you really don't want to wear it, that's fine. Just keep it somewhere safe in a drawer!"Even though I had said that, Liam had put it on without the slightest hesitation, and he had continued wearing it for the next nine years."Liam, what's past is past. If there's something you want to say, just say it."He seemed ready to pick up one of the diaries I had written and use it to draw me back into our memories, but when his eyes met mine again, t

"Nora, I know you don't want to see me. You even moved away just so you could disappear from my life, but there are still so many things I need to say to you."Liam's voice caught as he spoke, and before long, he was crying on the other end of the phone. My grip tightened slightly around the phone, but I said nothing. There was nothing left for us to talk about. At that family dinner, he had slapped me in front of everyone, then shoved me down the stairs even after I begged him not to leave. Before I lost consciousness, I had watched him rush to shield Hailey without hesitation, crying out that he would never marry me.While I was fighting to stay alive in the ICU, Liam and Hailey had already set a date for their wedding.I had endured that kind of heartbreak for far too long, and I had no intention of putting myself through it again.Even now, after settling down overseas and hearing my old friends tell me how Liam had gone almost insane after I left, how they were convinced he still

"You're the bastard who's been trying to steal her from me, aren't you?"I instinctively stepped in front of Julian and, without even knowing where the strength came from, shoved Liam away with both hands. He staggered backward, lost his footing, and crashed to the ground. When he jerked his head up to look at me, his eyes had already turned red. "You pushed me?"His disbelief quickly gave way to anger, and by the time he spoke again, he was practically shouting."You actually pushed me for another man! You were never like this before. You're in love with him!"I had no time to deal with his accusations. My attention was entirely on Julian, who was, after all, the blind date my mother had personally arranged for me. If anything happened to him, I wouldn't even know where to begin explaining it to her.Julian seemed to understand what I was thinking. He shook his head and gave me a small, reassuring smile."I'm fine. Don't worry."Liam got back to his feet somewhat awkwardly, and jud

Julian had always been rather reserved in my memory, but around me, he suddenly seemed to have no shortage of things to say."So you're living here now too? Liam didn't come with you? I thought you two would be getting married by now."Something flickered in Julian's eyes as though he were hoping for a particular answer. My hand paused for a moment before I smiled."We broke up, and we won't be getting married."Maybe I imagined it, but when he heard the words "broke up," I could have sworn he smiled. No sooner had I finished speaking than a loud crash suddenly came from behind me.I turned instinctively and froze when I saw Liam. His expression was icy as he strode toward me, and without a word, he grabbed my wrist."Nora, did you leave the country just to run off with some other man? And you still have the nerve to say you love me?"Liam spoke through gritted teeth, the veins in his forehead standing out with rage.I couldn't understand why he was so furious, much less why he was eve

Liam's voice was icy, as though he wished he could reach through the phone, drag me back himself, and force me to apologize to Hailey on the spot. For a moment, I found myself remembering that there had once been a time when Liam had defended me with the same intensity.Back then, hardly anyone thought the two of us belonged together.Even though I had earned my position at the company through my own abilities, people still accused me of getting to where I did through Liam and even spread rumors that I had slept my way into it. When one of my coworkers started spreading those inappropriate rumors about me, Liam took them straight to court simply because they had damaged my reputation. He told me that my reputation mattered just as much as the company's and that he would never allow anyone to slander me.But now, the person he would go to such lengths to protect was someone else.It was no longer me.Because of how fiercely he had stood up for me back then, I gave up the chance to move

  • When Love Ends in Tears and Heartbreak   Chapter 5

When my flight landed, the first person I saw was my mother.Thinking about it, we hadn't seen each other in nearly ten years, yet she still looked as radiant and full of life as ever. I forced a smile and tucked my hastily bandaged right hand behind my back, but before I could even say anything, she pulled me into a tight embrace."You've lost weight."Her eyes were red as she fussed over me, repeatedly brushing imaginary specks of dust from my clothes. Eventually, she couldn't hold it in anymore and turned away to wipe the tears from the corners of her eyes.Seeing her like that made my throat tighten as well, and the sting in my nose nearly brought me to tears. When Mom married my stepfather, she had called me countless times, asking me to move to Archuslea and settle down there with her.But Liam and I had just gotten together at the time, and all I could think about was working hard enough to prove myself to his parents and make them accept me. As such, no matter how many times
