Chapter One — The Girl in the Basement

THE REJECTED MATE IS THE MOON GODDESS'S DAUGHTERChapter One — The Girl in the BasementSophia POVI woke up, my back hurts. Not because I slept enough. Not because morning has come. Because the stone beneath me has become too cold to ignore. For several seconds, I don't move. I stare at the ceiling. There's a crack running across it. I've counted it so many times I know exactly where it begins.Above my head, someone walks across the floor. Then another person. Then another. The house is waking.I should get up. I don't. Not yet.For another ten seconds, I let myself stay where I am. The only warm thing I have is the breath leaving my own mouth. My blanket is a piece of torn fabric, used to be part of something better. A curtain, maybe. An old bedsheet. It doesn't matter anymore.I pull it away from my face and sit up. My body aches. My feet are numb. I look at the empty corner where a bed should be.There's never been one.I fold the torn fabric carefully. It's the only thing in this

Chapter Two — The One Who Isn't Invited

THE REJECTED MATE IS THE MOON GODDESS'S DAUGHTERChapter Two — The One Who Isn't InvitedSophia POVThe handle stops turning."Sophia." Mara's voice, flat and impatient, right through the wood. "You're not still lying down, are you? Get up. There's more work than there are hands today."I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. Just Mara. Just another day that hasn't decided to be kind yet.I pull my dress on in the dark and climb the stairs before she has to call my name again. The house is already awake in a way I've never seen it. Every hallway has someone moving through it, carrying flowers, carrying cloth, carrying trays of things too fine for the kitchen I know. Voices spill out of every open door, all of them talking about the same thing.Tomorrow night.I'm handed a stack of linens before I've even reached the kitchen. Then a bucket. Then a list of rooms that need airing before the ranked families arrive. Mara doesn't stop moving all morning, and neither do I. When I ask

Chapter Three — The Night of Fate

THE REJECTED MATE IS THE MOON GODDESS'S DAUGHTERChapter Three — The Night of FateSophia POVThe party was too loud.People talked and laughed over each other, pups darted between legs and table skirts, glasses clinked somewhere behind me every few seconds, and the whole hall smelled of wine and roasted meat and too many bodies pressed too close together. Female wolves in beautiful dresses drifted between groups. Male wolves stood in clusters, deep in conversation. Young wolves flirted in the dark corners near the windows, laughing too easily at things that weren't that funny.I felt out of place in every direction I looked. Then the doors at the far end of the hall opened, and the noise changed. It didn't stop all at once. It just seemed to bend — conversations trailing off mid-sentence, heads turning one after another like something was moving through the room and pulling everyone's attention with it. A few soft gasps rippled near the entrance. Someone murmured a name I couldn't qu

Chapter Four — The Mate Who Wasn't Supposed to Exist

THE REJECTED MATE IS THE MOON GODDESS'S DAUGHTERChapter Four — The Mate Who Wasn't Supposed to ExistDamon"Aggh." I wake with my head pounding, the light too bright even through closed eyes. What happened last night?Pieces come back sideways, incomplete. A woman. Talking, at first — something about not belonging, a sentence that hit me harder than it should have. Then more than talking. I try to pull her face out of the fog and get nothing. Only her hair, dark, loose. Nothing else holds still long enough to look at.I throw back the quilt to sit up and see the blood on the sheets, dark against the pale linen.I stare at it a moment before the meaning settles. In Moonridge, blood like that only means one thing about a woman's first night. She'd been untouched before. Before I can do anything with that, a voice comes from the doorway."You're awake."Seraphina. Wearing my shirt."My dress didn't survive last night," she says, quiet, almost embarrassed, arms crossed loosely like she's

Chapter Five — The Rejection

THE REJECTED MATE IS THE MOON GODDESS'S DAUGHTERChapter Five — The RejectionDamon POV "I, Damon Trya, reject you, Sophia, as my mate and Luna."The words leave me like something physically torn loose, and for one terrible second the whole ceremonial ground goes utterly silent, like even the wind has stopped to listen.Sophia doesn't move at first. She just looks at me — through tears now, her whole face open in a way that makes it worse, not better — as if she's waiting for me to take it back. As if some part of her still believes I might.I don't.I can't.Something in her expression finally breaks, and she turns and runs, the crowd parting around her like she's something to be avoided rather than someone who needed to be caught.I stand there a long moment after she's gone, not moving, the word still sitting in my mouth like something I can't quite swallow back down. I said it. I actually said it. Whatever I thought I understood about tonight — my duty, my bloodline, the mate my

Chapter Six — The Price of Rejection

THE REJECTED MATE IS THE MOON GODDESS'S DAUGHTERChapter Six — The Price of RejectionSophia POVFor one endless second, I don't understand what I've heard. His voice hangs in the air behind me — I reject you — and my mind refuses to catch up.The torches. The silence pressing in from every side. Three hundred faces I can feel more than see, all of them waiting to watch what I'll do next. Then my body decides for me.Tears blur my vision before I even realize I'm crying. I run.I don't stop at the main hall. I don't stop in the corridors, though I pass people who turn to stare, though someone laughs somewhere behind me, high and delighted, like my whole life just became the evening's best entertainment. I don't stop until I'm down the basement stairs, until the door is shut behind me and locked, until there's nothing between me and the dark except my own ragged breathing.I sink down against the door and let myself, finally, fall apart.Last night I lay right here replaying his hands,

Chapter Seven — The Wolf Who Wouldn't Let Go

THE REJECTED MATE IS THE MOON GODDESS'S DAUGHTERChapter Seven — The Wolf Who Wouldn't Let GoSophia POVThe guards wake me before the sky has properly decided what color it wants to be.I don't argue. I don't ask for more time. I just get up, my whole body one long, dull ache from yesterday, and go where I'm told, because that's the only thing that's ever actually worked for me.The kennels again. The same stone, the same cold water, the same smell that never fully leaves my hands no matter how hard I scrub them afterward.I'm halfway through the second row when I hear it.A voice — clear, ordinary, unremarkable — saying something about the eastern gate needing repair before the next patrol. I look up automatically, the way you do when someone's talking near you. There's no one near me.I straighten slowly, scanning the yard. The nearest guard is standing all the way across the training grounds, easily thirty feet away, talking to another man in a low voice I shouldn't be able to make

Chapter Eight — The Choice He Makes

THE REJECTED MATE IS THE MOON GODDESS'S DAUGHTERChapter Eight — The Choice He MakesDamon POVI can't sleep.Every time I close my eyes I'm back at the boundary, watching Sophia press her hand against a cut she never let herself react to, feeling that same wound bloom across my own chest a heartbeat later. There's one way to know if I imagined it.I sit up, take the small blade I keep on the nightstand, and press it against my own palm before I can talk myself out of it.I wait.Nothing.So it isn't simple pain-sharing, I think.Something changed there, Zoar says, quiet, none of his usual certainty in it. I don't know what.---Kael sends for me before I've properly slept at all."The announcement," he says, without preamble. "It's arranged. Sooner than we discussed. The elders want the succession question settled before there's more talk."Something in my chest tightens at that — not surprise, exactly, but the sudden, concrete weight of a date I hadn't let myself imagine yet. "How so

Chapter Nine — The Price of Mercyp

THE REJECTED MATE IS THE MOON GODDESS'S DAUGHTERChapter Nine — The Price of MercySophia POVMy hand still aches when I wake — a dull, deep throb that reaches all the way to my wrist, the bandage gone stiff and dark where it needs changing. I don't ask for a new one. Asking has never once gotten me anything I actually needed. I just get up, because getting up is the only thing that's ever worked for me, and go where I'm told.Above the basement, the whole house is humming with the same news it's been humming with for two days now — footsteps quicker than usual, voices pitched bright with excitement, someone laughing about flowers for the announcement hall. Damon and Seraphina. Soon. I let it wash over me and past me, the way water moves around a stone. I don't stop to listen to it properly. There isn't anything left in me that wants to.I go to work instead.By midmorning I'm crossing the courtyard near the pack house with an armful of folded cloth when one of the ranked wolves steps

Chapter Ten — The Moon Answers

THE REJECTED MATE IS THE MOON GODDESS'S DAUGHTERChapter Ten — The Moon AnswersSophia POVThe gate stays shut long after the voices behind it fade into silence. Two guards were posted near the wall when they first left me here, murmuring between themselves, casting the occasional glance my way to be sure I hadn't moved. Eventually even they gave in to the cold, retreating toward the small watch-shelter near the gate to wait out their shift, their voices dropping to nothing, until I couldn't tell if they were still awake at all.I don't know how many hours pass after that. Time stops meaning very much once the cold settles all the way into my knees, into the raw skin of my palms where the stone has worn them open again. I don't watch the pack house for movement. I don't listen for footsteps that might belong to him. I already told myself, once, plainly, that I wouldn't do that anymore, and for the first time in longer than I can remember, I actually manage to keep a promise to myself.
