She walked through the mud with an umbrella and stopped beside Leonardo. As he knelt beside the body, she reached down and wiped the rain from his forehead."I told you already. She's dead. Don't take it too hard. You still have the family to carry forward."Leonardo's shoulders tensed. You still have the family to carry forward.Sofia had once said the same thing. She had saved his life again and again, carried Emilio's hopes for the family, and stood beside him through countless shootouts.Leonardo's eyes turned vicious. He snarled, "Enough! Stop reminding me that she's dead! This is your fault! She's dead because of you!"Julia threw down the umbrella and shouted back, "I'm the one who grew up with you! Why did some woman come out of nowhere and take you away from me?! I was always there for you! We're already married. How can you mourn another woman right in front of me?"She struggled to catch her breath, her eyes red with anger."Fine! I'll say it! She's dead! She's dead! You can

After treating the last patients of the day, I carried the instruments back to my tent.It was pitch-black outside. As I passed some tall grass, something metallic flashed in the corner of my eye.A gun barrel.I had survived too many shootouts not to recognize one instantly. My body moved before I could think. I twisted aside and dropped into a crouch.Bang! The bullet grazed my ear and struck a metal barrel behind me with a sharp clang. My gaze sharpened. My hand went straight inside my coat and closed around the combat knife I always carried.I drew it and threw it toward the grass. The blade cut through the air.Someone grunted.I rushed over and dragged a man from the grass.Camouflage paint covered his face, but his pale skin made it obvious he wasn't local.I knew immediately who had sent him.The Rizzo family.Leonardo wouldn't hide in the grass and try to assassinate me.Which left Julia.I slammed his head into the ground, drove a knee into his back, and pressed my knife agai

Back at the camp, Jack Carter draped a white coat over my shoulders. He glanced between Leonardo and me, then lowered his voice. "The medical facilities here are limited. Are you sure you want to save her? Besides..." He paused. "You two clearly have history."Once, I might have thought twice. But after three months here, I'd watched children, mothers, and elderly people die in front of me. Death didn't care about grudges."Use my name. Pull whatever strings you have to. Just save her."Jack glanced at me, nodded, and disappeared into the emergency room. The heavy night air smelled of disinfectant.Leonardo leaned against the wall, his hands tangled in his hair. His voice came out muffled. "I never thought... it would come to this. Sofia, I'm so sorry."I scoffed, "Sorry doesn't fix any of this. You caused it."I had nothing else to say to him, so I turned toward the emergency room. The surgery took hours. The bullet was out, but whether Julia survived was up to her now.I stood beside

I raised my head and really looked at Jack for the first time.He stood under the blazing sun, his white coat streaked with blood and dust. Yet his eyes were bright and clear. After a long silence, I answered, "All right."When I reached Leonardo's camp, the guard outside stared at me in shock."The Don has been waiting for you forever."He hurried to open the door for me.I went in and found Leonardo drinking alone on the bed.He stared at me for two seconds, then jerked upright."Sofia... Did you change your mind?"Without answering, I pulled out a pen, several sheets of paper, and a marriage-license application and set them on the table."I did. You said you wanted to marry me. Do you still mean it?"The bottle fell from his hand and hit the carpet, liquor spreading across it.He rushed to the table and grabbed the pen. His hands were shaking so badly he couldn't even get the cap off."Yes! Of course I do!"He signed his name and looked up at me, his face lighting up."I will marry
