At the mention of the Don, Ellie Nobili paled. Her eyes reddened instantly, and tears fell to the floor one after another. "What do you mean? Are you using Father to threaten me?"I may be stupid... but I truly love this family. How could you doubt that..."Then I'll prove it by dying!"In tears, Ellie ran to the window and put one foot on the sill. She swayed like a kite about to be carried away by the next gust. The Donna raced over, pulled her down, and collapsed to her knees, sobbing. "My darling, I've never doubted your love for us. Please don't do anything foolish!"Anguish filled my brother's eyes as he roared at the staff, "Call an ambulance! Can't you see the princess is in shock?"My fiancé, Jack Romano, made one call and ordered his people to prepare his private jet to fly in the world's best specialists.I watched coldly, an outsider to it all.In Mafia families, schemes to win favor were hardly rare. I had seen them all before. When the Calvi family took me in, their adopt

The next day, the five Sicilian families held their annual high-stakes game at the Royal Casino in Catania. It was entertainment in name only. In reality, the families used the game to redraw territories and redistribute power.Every chip represented a port, a mine, or a shipping route. For the Nobili family, this was their final chance to recoup their losses.Ellie got up early to dress for the occasion, determined to make a grand entrance. When she saw me in a plain white T-shirt, she scoffed. "Didn't the other families teach you anything? You wear a formal gown to a game like this."If you don't own one, there's a spare here. I was going to donate it to a little girl at the orphanage I support, but you can borrow it first."I heard the insult in her voice and looked at the gown she meant.A charity hand-me-down, offered to me as an evening gown. The ploy was pathetic.I refused without hesitation. "No, thank you. I prefer being comfortable."Sarah gave me a disapproving look, and Jo

The entire Royal Casino was dead silent for three seconds. Then the room erupted like a powder keg."Lilith? What are you doing here?"John sprang from his chair and pointed at me with a trembling finger. His wineglass shattered on the floor, splashing scarlet wine across it.People started murmuring."The Nobili family picked the wrong enemy this time. Who knew Lilith had enough influence to bring both the Cara and Calvi families to her side?""Their blind devotion to that adopted daughter looks ridiculous now.""Who knows what trick that adopted daughter used to make the entire Nobili family so obsessed with her?""Nonsense!"A roar came from the back of the crowd.John shoved people aside and reached me in a few strides, his face scarlet and the veins in his neck bulging."Lilith! What are you up to now?"He jabbed a finger in my face and roared, nearly spraying me with spit."Driving Ellie onto a windowsill wasn't enough for you? Now you're conspiring with outsiders against the Nob

The Nobili family's standing plummeted.Once the most powerful of the five families, the Nobili family became Sicily's laughingstock overnight.John mortgaged their last estate to a bank. The money covered only a fraction of the interest they owed the loan sharks.Sarah's jewelry box stood empty. Every piece had been sold for less than a tenth of its original price.Ellie's dressing room was stripped bare. The auction house boxed up her designer gowns, limited-edition handbags, and dozens of pairs of handmade shoes.Every member of the staff vanished overnight. The vast estate held nothing but empty rooms and dust.It rained hard the day they moved out.John led the way, dragging two suitcases. Sarah followed in an old raincoat.Only Ellie kept glancing around furtively as she slipped a gown into her suitcase."Put that back." John turned and caught her in the act, his voice icy. "It belongs to Lilith. Give it back."Ellie jerked her hand back. "I only want something to remember it by.
